Just Because the Mainstream Media Isn’t Telling You About It, Doesn’t Mean You Shouldn’t Know About It: News You Should Know for January 15

lies again

Stories of the Day

Of course he does. “Telecom and cable companies have been lobbying for the state laws, arguing that it’s not fair for them to have to compete with government-owned Internet providers. The companies claim the city projects discourage private investment and are often expensive failures. House Republicans passed legislation last year to protect the state laws from FCC action.” Obama Backs Government-Run Internet: The president wants to overturn state laws that restrict cities from building their own Internet networks.

Of course it does. “Obama pushed for a surge in Afghanistan claiming that Al Qaeda had to be defeated. Al Qaeda wasn’t there then, but it may be making a comeback now.

Afghan officials confirmed for the first time Monday that the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is active in the south, recruiting fighters, flying black flags and, according to some sources, even battling Taliban militants.” Obama Exits Afghanistan, ISIS Moves In

Emphasis mine. “Disparate impact theory is well-entrenched in some areas of the law, most notably employment discrimination. But the Supreme Court has yet to say whether it applies in housing discrimination cases under the Federal Housing Act.

The Obama administration has done everything it can, short of abandoning the theory, to prevent the Supreme Court from deciding the issue. Indeed, in two cases, it in essence bought off the opposing parties to thwart Supreme Court review. In one of the cases, discussed here, the Holder Justice Department (and specifically Tom Perez, who is now Secretary of Labor) went so far as to give up a valuable monetary claim against the City of St. Paul in exchange for the City’s agreement to drop a case in which the Supreme Court was set to decide whether disparate impact claims can be brought under the FHA.

Why the desperation? Because (1) the application of disparate impact theory to housing law is an important component of the left’s efforts to tell Americans where to live and (2) the administration is deeply concerned that the Supreme Court as presently composed won’t buy the theory.” A DAY OF RECKONING FOR “DISPARATE IMPACT” HOUSING DISCRIMINATION CASES

Someone I know, who is Jewish and originally from the UK, came back from his annual visit to his family (summer 2014) and said that for the first time in his life he now knows what it must have felt like to be Jewish and living in Europe just before WWII. For the first time in his life he was fearful to be in Europe. “The European Jewish Association (EJA), which represents Jewish communities across Europe, says that gun license laws must be altered following a string of deadly attacks on Jews in France and other European countries, where anti-Semitism has been growing at an alarming rate.” Europe’s Leading Rabbi: Jews Must Begin Carrying Guns

2016 Presidential Election

Get a move on conservatives. Emphasis mine. “Conservative leaders this week shrugged off the sudden moves by Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney toward 2016 presidential campaigns, saying the two establishment-friendly candidates are too far out of touch with grass-roots activists to win the Republican nomination.

At the same time, potential candidates with close ties to the party’s conservative base have moved to speed up their own efforts in response.

Senior advisers to several of the potential conservative candidates said Wednesday that GOP insurgents will have to do more in 2016 than they did in previous cycles to make a serious run for the Republican nomination. Building a campaign nest egg and winning the support of mega-donors to fill the coffers of allied super PACs has become a particular priority.” Conservatives shrug off Bush and Romney, remain confident in base-friendly hopefuls

“When you read Jeb, think: amnesty.  When you read Mitt, think: Obamacare.  As if after this country has been beaten into mediocrity and submission to the state, by an imperial president, all we have to look forward to is a battle for the crowning of King RINO.

The two main problems the base had with the recent CRomnibus and have rejected consistently for decades happen to be, government-run healthcare and an increase in illegal immigrants entering the country, along with amnesty.  And the first two candidates out of the gate we see competing for donors who will listen to their tripe, are the poster boys for both liberal issues. (snip)

If either of them win the nomination, Republicans will lose in the general, as the conservative base once again rejects amnesty, government-run healthcare, and says no to more RINOs.”  Battle for King RINO Shows Party Paradigm Shift

Amnesty

It appears we’re being played AGAIN. “The best-case scenario here is that McConnell somehow finds 60 votes for a DHS funding bill with Roby’s amendment attached, then Obama vetoes it. At that point the GOP would claim a moral victory in getting a critical mass of Democrats to agree that his new mega-amnesty should be defunded, whereupon they’ll turn right around and pass a clean funding bill that will leave that amnesty intact. What I can’t figure out is why they made a big show of holding up DHS funding in the “cromnibus” last month knowing that this outcome was a fait accompli unless they convinced a handful of Dems not only to vote with them on amnesty but to tolerate a Homeland Security shutdown over it. The answer, I guess, is that this was always a goodwill gesture to conservatives and little more: They had to do something to exercise their power of the purse, especially after righties handed them control of the Senate.” House votes to undo Obama’s executive amnesties as part of new funding bill for Homeland Security

Short blog post so I am copying and pasting the whole thing (Allah’s post is above). “I don’t see the point of pretending this deception is real, but if you care about the manipulations of the Establishment on this issue, you can read Allah’s post.

I know this is not a real post and I won’t count it as one. But there’s no way I’m going to pretend the GOP’s silly shadow-play is something I should take seriously. They’re going to sell us out, and I’m not going to act as a theater critic, judging how well they’ve performed their play.” Republicans Execute a Tactical Feint on Amnesty Designed to Fool the Base

This writer didn’t get the memo as to how we’re being played. “Today’s vote lays bare a scandal of the first order. Our Constitution does not give the president the power to enact legislation by decree, or to alter legislation previously passed by Congress. Yet that is precisely what Obama has done, by purporting to change the nation’s immigration laws by executive order. I am not aware of any respectable legal argument to the effect that what Obama has done is constitutional, and he himself has admitted publicly on something like 23 occasions that he does not have the power to do, legally, what he has now done. This may be both the most serious and the most blatantly unconstitutional usurpation of power in our history. And yet, to my knowledge not a single prominent Democrat has spoken up in defense of the Constitution. The Democratic Party has sunk lower than anyone would have thought possible, just a few short years ago.” HOUSE VOTES TO RESTORE CONSTITUTION

The Economy

Leftist policies leading to where they always lead. Failure. “In a stunning Tuesday report, Gallup CEO and Chairman Jim Clifton revealed that “for the first time in 35 years, American business deaths now outnumber business births.”

Clifton says for the past six years since 2008, employer business startups have fallen below the business failure rate, spurring what he calls “an underground earthquake” that only stands to worsen as lagging U.S. Census data becomes available.

“Let’s get one thing clear: This economy is never truly coming back unless we reverse the birth and death trends of American businesses,” writes Clifton.” ECONOMIC DEATH SPIRAL: MORE AMERICAN BUSINESSES DYING THAN STARTING

Eric Holder

Click on over and read the whole thing. And for those of you reading in Arizona, in August of 2016, remember that Senator McCain was one of 19 Republicans who voted to confirm Eric Holder as our country’s Attorney General. “Time and again you chose to “politicize” the mission of the Department of Justice rather than pursue justice and now, tragically, we are witnessing the fruits of your irresponsible behavior in the murder of two innocent police officers in New York City, assassinated by a man motivated by the flames of racial hatred that you personally fanned. How many more police officers will be injured or die in the coming days because of the perilous conditions you helped create in this nation. You, President Obama and Al Sharpton own this problem lock, stock and barrel and now it is your legacy.

As thousands of NYPD officers turn their collective back on New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, another dishonest politician and Sharpton disciple, so too do countless Federal law enforcement officers turn our backs on you.” Snopes confirms open letter blasting Holder is from retired FBI agent

Free Speech

“Westerners fight against pornography, blasphemy, or hate speech in the arena of ideas by writing and speaking out against such foul expression. They are free to sue, picket, boycott, and pressure sponsors of unwelcome speech. But Westerners cannot return to the Middle Ages to murder those whose ideas they don’t like.  (snip)

After the September 2012 attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Obama wrongly blamed filmmaker Nakoula Nakoula for sparking the violence by posting an anti-Islamic video. Obama chose to go before the United Nations to attack Nakoula (who was conveniently jailed by a federal judge for a minor probation violation): “The future must not belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam.”

Actually, Mr. President, the future belongs to civilized men and women who do not murder satirists who choose while in the West to ridicule any religion they please. Islam wins no special exemption.

The issue is not whether the late editors and cartoonists at Charlie Hebdo were obnoxious or clever, self-destructive, or courageous — but only whether Westerners reserve the right on their own soil to express themselves as they please.

Too bad so many of our leaders do not understand that.” Can the West Stand Up for Free Speech? False moral equivalence and blatant cowardice threaten our tradition of free expression.

Higher Education

WE CANNOT AFFORD ANOTHER ENTITLEMENT MR. PRESIDENT (ALL CAPS INTENDED BECAUSE I AM SCREAMING). “10. Does Anyone Remember We’re Suffocating in Government Debt?

This last item, combined with the first, is actually the other thing that immediately jumps into my head any time some politician proposes another government program. PEOPLE. WE HAVE NEGATIVE DOLLARS. Severely negative dollars. We cannot afford all the government we have, let alone a huge additional pile-on.

Our national debt stands at $18.1 trillion and counting. That’s $56,500 for every single person living in this country. So my three children who have no capability to earn a cent (they’re 4, 3, and 1) owe the Chinese $169,500. Adding “free” community college will only further jeopardize their life prospects. Massive debt, not to mention the inability of Congress to pass a budget and cut monsters like Social Security and Medicare, which are driving this country into fiscal hell, is a huge damper on a national economy, and thus the life prospects of the people living in it. That’s me and you and our kids.

It is no help to young people to assume more public debt on their behalf and at decades of compounding interest to finance yet more entitlements to crush the economy they will enter. It’s mean. It’s time for politicians to stop “helping” us by spending money we don’t have for programs we don’t need. That includes college for all. Our nation needs drastic spending and program cuts and more pathways to career opportunities than a generic degree, not more fantastical spending binges with other people’s money.” Ten Quick Reasons ‘Free Community College’ Is A Rotten Idea: President Obama: “Community colleges are so effective, we should shove every kid into one!” Those midterms clearly put him off the deep end.

Immigration

Trouble ahead. “A 2011 Pew report on “The Future of the Global Muslim Population” concluded that the U.S. Muslim population will more than double in 20 years, hitting “about 6.2 million in 2030, in large part because of immigration and higher-than-average fertility among Muslims.”

Fifteen years from now, America will “have a larger number of Muslims than any European country” except for Russia and France. The concern is that future generations of this group will radicalize, with catastrophic results like those seen in Paris last week.

Those French terrorists grew up in Paris suburbs. Will we let America’s suburbs, cities and other communities become similar incubators of death.” America Following France’s Demographic Path To Terror

The Left

The answer is this: We hope not, especially as the Democrat party continues moving farther to the left. “For the Democrats to reverse their long-term decline, however, they will need to turn away from the far left and move closer to the center.” DOES THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAVE A FUTURE?

It didn’t work so why do the Democrats continue to insist upon taking us further down this path? “Transformative and beneficial though they were, and still are, the Great Society programs minted 50 years ago have mutated into sources of new and intractable problems, the most important of which is their unanticipated, enormous cost — which not only increases the national debt but also crowds out spending on other critical public needs from national defense to research.

Spending on Medicare, Medicaid, the two education laws and SSDI hit nearly $1 trillion in fiscal 2013, according to the Congressional Budget Office, or roughly 3 out of every 10 dollars Washington spent after interest payments. Future health-care costs, slated to grow in part due to Medicaid’s expansion under Obamacare, drive projected future federal deficits; SSDI’s trust fund is on course to run out of cash by fiscal 2017.

Meanwhile, evidence mounts that the great acts of 1965 now yield diminishing returns or, in some cases, have actually turned counterproductive.” Charles Lane: A country trapped in 1965’s ambitions

I find that my Left-leaning friends are incredibly ignorant about current events, and it is not because they aren’t paying attention. It’s because their only sources of news are MSNBC and CNN. “Ironically, these “Fox News Viewers Are Stupid!” stories are little more than a large and intense exercise in confirmation bias, indulgences of the very thing that the people who push them attribute to their antagonists. The Left has learned over the years that winning debates is difficult but discrediting people and institutions is relatively easy. You point the finger and yell “racist!” or “stupid!” or “stupid racist!” long enough and loud enough and it will start to stick. And for a long time, the Left did not have to do very much debating, because there was no Fox News, no Rush Limbaugh et al., and no conservative alternatives online. Now there are, and so the Left’s most pressing order of business is the delegitimization of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh et al., and conservative alternatives online. And if that doesn’t work, Harry Reid is ready to repeal the First Amendment, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is ready to see you locked up for your political views.

And when that happens, you can bet that somebody will publish a study finding that it’s the only rational thing to do.” The Fox News Obsession: It’s an exercise in confirmation bias on the Left.

President Obama

He’d rather see us all turn and bow down to our government. “In his speech, in which he criticized white Christian leaders and discussed his own skepticism of faith, Obama explained the appeal of organized religion. “They want a sense of purpose, a narrative arc to their lives. They’re looking to relieve a chronic loneliness, a feeling supported by a recent study that shows Americans have fewer close friends and confidants than ever before. And so they need an assurance that somebody out there cares about them, is listening to them – that they are not just destined to travel down that long highway towards nothingness.” Obama: ‘My Father Was Born A Muslim’ [VIDEO]

Another Lefty waking up from his Obama dream and finding out it’s actually turning into a nightmare. “Gelb is a liberal whose foreign policy credentials are impressive if you like this sort of thing. At the age of 77, his resume includes “former correspondent for The New York Times and …currently President Emeritus and Board Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations,” assistant to Jacob Javits, Carter’s Assistant Secretary of State, and plenty more that would warm the cockles of most Democrats’ hearts.

But Gelb writes as though he were Rip Van Winkle just waking up from a long, long and very deep sleep, one that lasted from January of 2009 till now and encompassed Obama’s entire presidency so far.

How else to explain this sort of thing?:

The failure of Obama or Biden to show up in Paris made clear that most of the president’s team can’t be trusted to conduct U.S national security policy and must be replaced—at once. (snip)

Gelb goes on to blame Obama’s staff for Obama’s non-attendance at the march (“oh, if only Stalin knew!”). Then he suggests the following:

First, Mr. Obama will have to thank his senior National Security Council team and replace them. The must-gos include National Security Adviser Susan Rice, Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, chief speech writer/adviser Ben Rhodes, and foreign policy guru without portfolio Valerie Jarrett. They can all be replaced right away, and their successors won’t require senatorial confirmation.

Obama fire Jarrett? Delusional, risible. Obama would be more likely to cut off his own right arm.” Leslie Gelb seems frightened… …as well as totally clueless about Obama.

George Soros

Be aware: The deep pockets of Leftist/Progressive George Soros reach far and wide. The article is long but worth a read. “There’s a solitary man at the financial center of the Ferguson protest movement. No, it’s not victim Michael Brown or Officer Darren Wilson. It’s not even the Rev. Al Sharpton, despite his ubiquitous campaign on TV and the streets.

Rather, it’s liberal billionaire George Soros, who has built a business empire that dominates across the ocean in Europe while forging a political machine powered by nonprofit foundations that impacts American politics and policy, not unlike what he did with MoveOn.org.

Mr. Soros spurred the Ferguson protest movement through years of funding and mobilizing groups across the U.S., according to interviews with key players and financial records reviewed by The Washington Times.

In all, Mr. Soros gave at least $33 million in one year to support already-established groups that emboldened the grass-roots, on-the-ground activists in Ferguson, according to the most recent tax filings of his nonprofit Open Society Foundations.” George Soros funds Ferguson protests, hopes to spur civil action: Liberal billionaire gave at least $33 million in one year to groups that emboldened activists

liars

Stories of the Day

Our men and women in uniform are just not that in to him. “The long-term effects of Obama’s social policies on the military remain unknown. But one thing is clear: He is a deeper unpopular commander in chief among the troops.

According to a Military Times survey of almost 2,300 active-duty service members, Obama’s popularity — never high to begin with — has crumbled, falling from 35 percent in 2009 to just 15 percent this year, while his disapproval ratings have increased to 55 percent from 40 percent over that time.” AMERICA’S MILITARY: A conservative institution’s uneasy cultural evolution

A liar from the very start of his stepping on to the national stage. “The following passage appears in Barack Obama’s speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention [emphasis mine]:

That is the true genius of America, a faith…a faith in simple dreams, an insistence on small miracles; that we can tuck in our children at night and know that they are fed and clothed and safe from harm; that we can say what we think, write what we think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door; that we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe; that we can participate in the political process without fear of retribution; and that our votes will be counted — or at least, most of the time. (snip)

I didn’t listen to Obama’s 2004 speech, or much of either convention that year; I’m not a big fan of speeches in general. But reading it now I could almost weep, because it is so deceptive, so unlike the Barack Obama we’ve come to know so well. If the guy portrayed in that speech had won an election, the result probably wouldn’t have been half bad. But that guy never existed; he was an actor reading his lines. 2004 was his first performance on the national stage, and he ought to have won an Oscar for it.” Irony, thy name is Obama

Lovely. Emphasis mine. “House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is set to appoint a Muslim lawmaker to the Intelligence Committee, congressional aides said Tuesday, giving him access to some of America’s most closely held secrets in the war on terror.

The move will come as the world is still grappling with an al-Qaeda death squad’s massacre last week of journalists at the French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo, executed because they had published a cartoon of the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

Rep. André Carson has attracted suspicion for his public statements, including a 2012 Islamic Circle of North America convention where he said America’s schools should be modelled after Qur’anic madrassas.

Moments later he warned undercover law enforcement skulking around the event looking for ‘secret meetings’ that ‘Allah will not allow you to stop us.’Democrats will appoint Muslim to the House Intelligence Committee who said US schools should be like Islamic madrassas and warned law enforcement that ‘Allah will not allow you to stop us’

Apparently the satirists “deserved what they got.” “Throughout many schools in France, Muslim students refused to comply with a moment of silence to honor the victims of theCharlie Hebdo massacre. While some spoke obnoxiously loudly during the 60 second period, others yelled “Allahu Akbar!” or “God is great.” In another incident, a group of young Muslims dishonored the moment of silence, telling their teacher, “You reap what you sow,” the Washington Post reports.

At another school in Seine-Saine-Denis, some 80 percent of students refused to honor the moment of silence, saying that the Charlie Hebdo staff “deserved what they got” for insulting Islam’s Muhammad, reports Le Figaro. In another incident in Lille, a young boy threatened to shoot his teacher “with a Kalashnikov” for asking him to remain silent during the minute of remembrance. Others spoke highly of jihadists who had joined ISIS and fought on behalf of Islam abroad.” FRENCH MUSLIM STUDENTS YELL “ALLAHU AKBAR,” DISHONOR MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR CHARLIE HEBDO VICTIMS

More to come if we aren’t vigilant. “The ISIS “Raqaa Media Office” has just published a new video in which one fighter promises to bring attacks to France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and the United States (begins at approximately  0:56).

The first fighter concludes with:

Whoever was shocked and amazed must comprehend, the Muslims today have a loud and thundering voice, and possess heavy boots. They will have a statement that will cause the world to hear and understand the meaning of terrorism, and boots that will trample the idol of nationalism, destroy the idol of democracy and its falseness.” BREAKING VIDEO: New ISIS Video Calls for Attacks on France and U.S.

An empty chair is the correct analogy, as suggested by Clint Eastwood at the GOP National Convention several years ago. “It should be painfully clear by now that no one of authority is in charge at the White House, least of all President Obama.

His government is running itself, without any serious, detailed direction from the West Wing in the day-to-day issues and troubles America faces at home and abroad.

We saw that happen in the bungled, mistake-filled rollout of Obamacare, where the left hand did not know what the right hand was doing. Many other times since then in the deadly Benghazi consulate attacks, the incompetent Veterans Affairs scandal, the politicization of the Internal Revenue Service that targeted voter groups who didn’t support Mr. Obama, and a long list of other management disasters over the past six years.

We saw it again this week in the repeated apologies from the White House when the president didn’t even send a high-level official to Paris to demonstrate our solidarity with European leaders who marched in Paris to denounce the bloody terrorist attacks in the French capital.

What was Mr. Obama thinking as he watched heads of state from Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere march with millions of others in the largest demonstration in France’s history? He wasn’t thinking.” Tiptoeing around terror: In denial, Obama won’t face the threat

How can we make the lies stop? “It is common for White House spokespeople to spin the facts–to find the interpretation that best flatters the president. It is rare, but not unheard of, for White House spokespeople to lie about facts that are not yet fully known to the public. It is extraordinary for White House spokespeople to lie about facts that everyone already knows. Yet that is exactly what Josh Earnest did on Tuesday, when trying to explain why the Obama administration strains to avoid mentioning radical Islam. (snip)

On Tuesday–the same day that Earnest fabricated his false chronology–CNN aired newly-released footage of the attack, in which the gunmen shouted in the street (in French, contrary to the comments of the anchor) that they had avenged the prophet. That was before they executed the police officer on the street in cold blood–i.e. it was in mid-attack, not “later.”

Yet Earnest lied, to preserve Obama’s politically correct fictions about radical Islam. What an insult to the dead, and a disgrace.” WHITE HOUSE LIES ABOUT FRANCE TERROR TO PRESERVE PC VIEW ON ISLAM

Many in the media are wimps of the highest order. “Finally, why won’t the New York Times print even one Charlie Hebdo cartoon? Twelve people were slaughtered over those cartoons; are the caricatures not newsworthy? Of course they are. But they satirize Islam, and that is not allowed.

Here’s the ultimate irony. These PC professors and news media who treat Islam so much better than any other religion are literally Islamophobic. They really fear Islam.” Why Is Islam Treated Better than Other Faiths? Political correctness has led us to privilege it above other religions.

I don’t typically copy and paste an entire post from a website but I had to on this one. Just way too good not to…Well of course he does. He says the Muslim call to prayer is the most beautiful sound on earth.

President Barack Obama has a moral responsibility to push back on the nation’s journalism community when it is planning to publish anti-jihadi articles that might cause a jihadi attack against the nation’s defenses forces, the White House’s press secretary said Jan. 12.

Yeah that justification is a lie; left-wingers like Obama have long learned the Marxist trick of claiming they’re advancing a Marxist goal only to achieve allegedly right-wing purposes.

The entire politics is steeped in deception, which is why it appeals to the liar Obama.

“The president…will not now be shy about expressing a view or taking the steps that are necessary to try to advocate for the safety and security of our men and women in uniform” whenever journalists’ work may provoke jihadist attacks, spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at the White Houses daily briefing.

Yes, he told us already: The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.

The unprecedented reversal of Americans’ civil-military relations, and of the president’s duty to protect the First Amendment, was pushed by Earnest as he tried to excuse the administrations opposition in 2012 to the publication of anti-jihadi cartoons by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Yeah, again, that’s a risk, but this justification is a lie; Obama could give a shit about the lives of US servicemen. He only cares about the feelings of foreign Muslims.” White House: Obama Feels a Moral Responsibility to Fight Back Against Media Outlets Which Publish Anti-Jihad Articles

Showing his true colors. “It’s not too often that the “most transparent administration in history” is, what’s the word? . . . transparent.” I’m Glad Obama Skipped Paris: He doesn’t really believe in protecting speech critical of Islam.

More on Obama’s world view being exposed. “Barack Obama’s vision of the world, both at home and abroad, is one in which some people and nations are undeservedly far better off than others in many ways.

In the Obama view of the world, those who are undeservedly thriving (“You didn’t build that!”) are to be forced to pay for benefits to those who are not thriving, whether the latter are people on welfare, community college students, or immigrants from poorer nations, who are to be let into the United States to take a share of Americans’ prosperity.

On the international stage, it is the same principle, where the problem is seen as Western nations being undeservedly better off than other nations, both economically and in terms of greater military power. Here too, Obama is for redistribution, even at the expense of his own country — if someone with such a “citizen of the world” viewpoint really thinks of America as his country, rather than a staging area for his world-changing, ideologically driven crusades.” Obama’s New Year’s Irresolution: The “leader” of the free world’s absence from the Charlie Hebdo march in Paris is telling.

Turning points. “This surprises me. I admire and respect Hannan, who is an eloquent man and who represents the Conservative Party for South East England as a Member of the European Parliament. I have never found him to be naive or overly optimistic.

So if he sees a silver lining to this cloud, I tend to listen. Hannan perceives a sea-change in Europe as a result of the Charlie Hebdo massacre:

We all know the traditional routine that follows an Islamist terror attack: momentary shock, then platitudinous disapproval, then condemnation of Western foreign policy, then hand-wringing about an imagined Islamophobic backlash…

But not this time. Something in Europe has changed — changed utterly.” Dan Hannan thinks something in Europe has fundamentally changed…

A brave man within the Muslim world saying what no other leaders will say and what no one in the mainstream press will print. “Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi continues to be the antithesis of longstanding mainstream media portrayals of him.

First there was his historic speech where he, leader of the largest Arab nation, and a Muslim, accused Islamic thinking of being the scourge of humanity — in words that no Western leader would dare utter.  This remarkable speech — which some say should earn him the Nobel Peace Prize — might have fallen by the wayside had it not been posted on my website and further disseminated by PJ Media’s Roger L. Simon, Michael Ledeen, Roger Kimball, and many others, including Bruce Thornton and Robert Spencer.

Instead, MSM headlines on the day of and days after Sisi’s speech included “Egypt President Sisi urged to free al-Jazeera reporter” (BBC, Jan 1), “Egyptian gays living in fear under Sisi regime” (USA Today, Jan. 2), and “George Clooney’s wife Amal risks arrest in Egypt” (Fox News, Jan. 3).

Of course, the MSM finally did report on Sisi’s speech — everyone else seemed to know about it — but, again, to portray Sisi in a negative light.” Sisi’s Brave New Egypt? There is, of course, a reason the MSM, which apparently follows the Obama administration’s lead, has been unkind to Egypt’s president.

Communism

Speaking the truth. “In a refreshingly powerful and direct statement, Venezuela’s bishops Monday blamed “Marxist socialism” and “communism” by name for the horrors and chaos gripping their country, according to a story in El Universal.

The bishops said the long lines of people trying to buy food and other basic necessities and the constant rise in prices are the result of the government’s decision to “impose a political-economic system of socialist, Marxist or communist,” which is “totalitarian and centralist” and “undermines the freedom and rights of individuals and associations.”

The Venezuelan bishops specifically stated that the private sector was critical for the well being of the country. The document, read by Monsignor Diego Padron in Spanish, said the country needs “a new entrepreneurial spirit with audacity and creativity.”

So not only did these bishops diagnose the cause of the misery correctly; they also warned that communism harms the poor most of all.” Venezuela’s Bishops Have A Message For Pope Francis on Communism

The Economy

Economy improving in spite of the heavy hand of big government Democrat policies. “The improving U.S. economy will make absolutely no one forget the Long Boom of the Reagan-Clinton-Gingrich years. Wage growth is stagnant, and too few Americans are working. As Paul Ryan, the new chairman of the House Ways and Means committee, said yesterday, “The latest job report is the nicest car in the junk yard.” Still, it’s also clear that GDP and job growth have finally shifted to a higher gear. So does anyone in Washington deserve even a smidge of credit for the upturn? In my new The Week column, I throw gallons of cold water on the dubious notion that Obamanomics is the reason for this new season of prosperity (such as it is). Sorry, Democrats. (snip)

Austerity — both budget cuts and tax increases — were offset by massive monetary easing by the Federal Reserve. Add in cheaper energy and the natural recuperative forces of a free-market economy, and you get a modest economic resurgence.” The U.S. Recovery Is Finally Strengthening. Who Deserves the Credit?

Opportunity for all, by killing big government and crony capitalism. “Conservatives aren’t fighting with the party’s leaders because we want to avoid talking about policy. We fight because we want to spark the real policy conversations that can redefine the movement. Want to promote Opportunity for All? There’s no better way to start than by declaring a commitment to Favoritism to None.” Fighting for the Second-Shift Worker: A conservative policy summit seeks solutions to help working Americans, not big business.

Elections

We’ve got to get it right in 2016. Otherwise, I doubt the country can recover from what the Leftist Progressives have bestowed upon us over the full eight years of Obama’s term.  “Because the country is in a genuine crisis, and the happy talk about the economy and the oil dividend isn’t fooling anyone who knows what the nation’s debt means once the interest rate begin to tick up as it must inevitably do.  The labor force participation crisis and the entitlement time bombs are real, and so too are the quadruple challenges of Russia, China, Iran and ISIS.  The world is so perilous that even lefties see it, and look up from their parlor games on EPA regulations and various other pet causes to survey a world wobbling on the edge of chaos.

Paris did that.  And so too last week did the Boko Haram, and last month the cold-blooded killers of the Pakistani school children and the fanatic in Sydney.  The news is moving so fast that not even our diversions can block the bleakness out.

So the way is open for the substantive candidate, the man and woman who will, like Reagan, speak both seriously and with sincere optimism about America’s role in the world and how to not only reclaim it but put it to good and very necessary use.  The candidate who genuinely believes in American exceptionalism and can articulate its promise and its reconstruction will win.

I don’t know–nobody does– who will most persuasively address these most pressing issues and especially the pressing need to rebuild and revitalize America’s military and to buttress its national security on many fronts, but the candidate who does that on the GOP side –who is believed to understand the issues and to have a plan for addressing them– is best suited to defeat Hillary.” The Jumble, The Rumble and The Promise

Higher Education

Speaking directly to the low information voters who don’t do more than read headlines. “The whole thing is somewhat of a gimmick, a sound-good feel-good fish to throw to liberals. I’m not sure that even Obama thinks it has a chance of being passed. But it is ideologically in step with his general approach to government:

The new entitlement is best understood as an extension of the Administration’s ideological project to add higher education to the list of entitlements that keep the federal government in charge of American life from cradle to grave…

Punish private schools, subsidize often inferior public schools, snatch regulatory control from states, and add tens of billions in new taxpayer obligations…

Makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? How many people will buy this, even as an idea?” Obama’s community college plan

Hey low info. voters: Can you please get it into your thick heads that NOTHING IS EVER FREE?!?!?! “Some days I’m not sure what causes me to shake my head in disbelief more… the policies coming out of the White House or the people who answer the phones for Rasmussen polls. The polling subject this week was all about the idea that community college should be free for every student who manages good enough grades to go. It turns out that a small plurality are up for that idea… provided they don’t have to pay anything extra for it.” Americans like Obama’s free community college idea… if they don’t have to pay for it

Rewarding failure. “But… dropouts who are confined (by their own choice — they weren’t forced to drop out) to a “less than stellar” life can still vote. So politicians (of both parties, but especially Democrats) buy their votes, thus perpetuating dropping out of school, give-away programs, and warrantless wage increases. The politicians thus make it possible for dropouts to avoid the consequences of their voluntary choices.  The dropouts are coddled by us taxpayers because, in the view of liberals, it would be too harsh for them to “reap what they sew.” And they vote.” Dropouts are the Real Problem

Illegal Immigration

Some day, probably sooner than later, we are going to have to pay for what our government is doing to our country and its citizens, all at the bidding of the Left and special interests, namely big businesses that will profit via paying lower wages. “It may be difficult to understand how the leadership of our own government could be behind a push for anarchy, but incredibly this is precisely what we are witnessing — not only in Washington, but among political leaders in some states and cities across the United States. The prime issue behind this lunacy is immigration. Entering the realm of immigration is the equivalent of entering a parallel universe where up is down, left is right and right is wrong.” America on the Precipice of Immigration Anarchy

Make him squeal. “Assuming this makes it through Congress intact and on to the President’s desk, I’m very much looking forward to what Josh Earnest will have to say about it at the briefing. If Obama has a bill in front of him which will fund DHS with the nearly insignificant (dollar wise) exception of amnesty, and he vetoes it, how does the White House spin that? Obama will be shutting down the entire department on his own. Who’s the obstructionist now?” Pelosi shocked that GOP is doing what they said they would do on DHS

National Debt

In my opinion, besides terrorism, the debt is the biggest problem our country is facing. But does ANYONE, besides us peons care? “Consequently, in order for Obama’s debt increase to be no larger than Reagan’s, Obama would need to reduce the federal debt by 5.1 percent of GDP between now and January 2017.

The other valid comparison is to look at per capita federal debt in constant dollar terms.  We can get at this number by multiplying the federal debt as a percentage of GDP (shown above) by real GDP in chained 2009 dollars and then dividing by the population. Via this approach, Reagan increased the real per capita federal debt by $8,584, whereas Obama has already increased the real per capita federal debt by $15,177.

Whichever way you look at it, Obama has already increased the federal debt far more than Reagan ever did.” Obama’s federal debt dwarfs Reagan’s

Obamacare

The non-geniuses reside in the Democrat party. “It doesn’t require an economic genius to realize what happens when increased demand meets reduced supply.

One of the myths of government-run health care has always been the idea that saying people are “covered” is the same thing as giving them health care. We see that in single-payer systems around the world, where universal coverage actually means waiting lists or rationing.

If Obamacare advocates are going to insist that enrollment numbers mean that the ACA is working, they are going to have to come up with a different definition of “working.” How Obamacare Is ‘Working:’ Increased insurance coverage does not mean increased access to medical care.

This is another reason why we must fear our current government. “Obamacare would not have passed if Senator Ted Stevens had been re-elected in 2008. But two Alaska federal prosecutors, assistant U.S. attorneys Joseph Bottini and James Goeke, charged him with accepting tens of thousands of dollars of illegal contributions, and obtained a felony conviction on October 27, 2008, just days before the election. The only problem: they had illegally withheld exculpatory evidence from the defense, and the conviction was overturned. But the damage had been done, and the longest-serving Republican in the Senate at the time had neen turned out of office, replaced by Democrat Mark Begich, who provided the crucial 60th vote to pass Obamacare.

Yesterday, it was revealed that the two prosecutors would escape punishment for their history-changing misconduct.” Outrage: Federal prosecutors who railroaded Ted Stevens escape punishment

Just Because the Mainstream Press Isn’t Telling You About It, Doesn’t Mean You Shouldn’t Know About It: News You Should Know for January 12

Stories of the Day

Can someone please tell President Obama and the rest of the Democrats that NOTHING is EVER FREE. “As the President’s State of the Union speech nears, he is launching trial balloons right and left–mostly left–to see what might prove a hit for his annual night of big policy initiatives. Some of the proposals on deck are cyber security and Internet proposals, two years of “free” community college, and changes in the way people qualify for homeownership.” OBAMA PITCHING BIG GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS AHEAD OF SOTU SPEECH

“Late in the morning on Saturday (EST), January 10, the Conseil Représentatif des Institutions juives de France (CRIF) disclosed the identities of the four individuals killed in the kosher market takeover the day before.  They were all men, and they were gunned down not long after Amedy Coulibaly entered the store.  None was killed in the commando raid.  One, a clerk in the store, Yohan Cohen, was shot as he grappled with the gunman.  The other three were presumably executed.  Besides the 22-year-old Cohen, they are Yoav Hattab, 21, reportedly the son of the chief rabbi of Tunis; Philippe Braham, 40; and François-Michel Saada, in his 60s. (snip)

The failure to give the grocery store victims names and faces is in keeping with the practice of the MSM not to pay attention to victims of rocket attacks from Gaza or of Palestinian terrorism, unless they are mistaken for Muslims – the owner of the bloody shoe in Ashkelon, injured in a Palestinian rocket attack, or the young Israeli beaten up by an Arab mob near Temple Mount and who was being protected by a policeman.  An exception is the four rabbis butchered in Jerusalem, two of whom were Americans.

George Zimmerman’s face was on the home page of almost every American news site Saturday.  He’d been arrested for throwing a bottle of wine at his girlfriend.

But anyone curious about who was killed in Hyper Cacher, the kosher market, had to go to Israeli or Jewish-American websites, or the Daily Mail, to find out.” Jewish victims at kosher market nameless, faceless in the MSM

“Do liberals actually believe in the right to offend?” The answer would be “no, not really.” Indeed, the outpouring of support for free speech in the aftermath of the Paris attack coincides with, and partially obscures, the degradation of speech rights in the West. Commencement last year was marked by universities’ revoking of appearances by speakers Condoleezza Rice and Ayaan Hirsi Ali for no other reason than that mobs disagreed with the speakers’ points of view. I do not recall liberals rallying behind Condi and Hirsi Ali then. (snip)

Brendan Eich donated a thousand dollars to California’s Proposition Eight in 2008. Six years later it cost him his job. In 2014, when Charles Krauthammer merely stated his agnosticism on the question of what causes global warming, liberals organized a petition demanding his removal from the Washington Post.” Blasphemy for Me, but Not for Thee

“If we’re serious about turning the tide, we have to recognise that the credo of the Left, with its contempt for Western values, its antipathy to freedom and its emphasis on non-judgmentalism, is hindering our response to terror. All cultures are not equal. One that murders non-believers, despises freedom of expression, and violently oppresses women and homosexuals is not equal to what we are striving for in the West.

We must ignore the malcontents and declare that our values, our achievements and our way of life are better than our enemies. Those who think otherwise shouldn’t be silenced or forced to join in with what they can reasonably opt out of; but neither should they be appeased. If they choose to put their faith first, they must not expect society to bend to their will, to refrain from offending them, or to exempt them from the rule law.” LEFT WING VALUES ARE HINDERING OUR RESPONSE TO ISLAMIC EXTREMISM

Is it possible that the those on the Left might have just been jolted from their deep slumbers? “The change has come, above all, from the soft Left. We conservatives never had a problem with the unapologetic defense of Western values. As for the old Left, or what remains of it, it cheerfully snarls at all religions. In between, though, is a swathe of people for whom the paramount political virtue has, until now, been not causing offense to minorities.

There is no British magazine like Charlie Hebdo, but we used to have a scatological TV show called “Spitting image,” which parodied, in puppet form, politicians, celebrities, Royals and, for a time, Jesus. A few Christians wrote in to complain and were dismissed as uptight prudes. Then a Muslim objected to the way his second prophet was being mocked, and the puppet was promptly dropped. Immigrants, explained the editor, had a hard enough time of it without their beliefs being mocked. (snip)

Conservatives, of course, have few such hangups. We approve of civility, and find papers like Charlie Hebdo tiresome, childish and obnoxious. But we also know that their obnoxiousness is the flip-side of religious freedom. If you are free to practice your faith, I must be free to laugh at it.

In recent years, in Europe at any rate, a large chunk of the population lost sight of that principle. If the Paris monstrosity has brought some of them back to their senses, then a tiny bit of good might have come of this foul business.” Paris attack wakes Europeans to importance of free speech

The Left hi-jacking our language once again. “Multiculturalism is one of those buzzwords that does not mean what it should. The ancient and generic Western study of many cultures is not multiculturalism. Rather, the trendy term promotes non-Western cultures to a status equal with or superior to Western culture largely to fulfill contemporary political agendas.

On college campuses, multiculturalism not so much manifests itself in the worthy interest in Chinese literature, Persian history, or hieroglyphics, but rather has become more a therapeutic exercise of exaggerating Western sins while ignoring non-Western pathologies to attract those who see themselves in some way as not part of the dominant culture.

It is a deductive ideology that starts with a premise of Western fault and then makes evidence fit the paradigm. It is ironic that only Western culture is self-critical and since antiquity far more interested than other civilizations in empirically investigating the culture of the other.  It is no accident that Europeans and Americans take on their own racism, sexism, and tribalism in a way that is not true of China, Nigeria or Mexico. Parody, satire, and caricature are not Chinese, African, or Arab words.” Multicultural Suicide

An empty chair’s repeat performance. “More than 40 heads of state came together in Paris to denounce a wave of terrorism that defiled the City of Light last week — yet there was one glaring exception: The U.S. sent only a low-level official.

French President Francois Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and dozens of other world leaders all took part in the powerful denunciation of last week’s terror attacks that left 17 innocents dead.

Even Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas set aside their differences to march together on Boulevard Voltaire.

But the nation that stands as the symbolic face of the war on terror was nowhere in sight.” Eric Holder, U.S. officials no-shows at Paris unity rally

Harsh opinions being expressed from across the pond. “The US was represented at the march only by Jane Hartley, the American ambassador to France who is unrecognizable to most Americans, let alone the rest of the world.” America snubs historic Paris rally: Holder skipped out of proceedings early, Kerry was in India, Obama and Biden just stayed home

Tone deaf. “’I wish our US President had gone to Paris to stand with our European allies,” tweeted James Stavridis, the retired Navy admiral and current dean of Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

“It’s stunning, truly stunning,” said Aaron David Miller, who among other responsibilities during his time at the State Department under both Republican and Democratic administrations, helped deliberate over which officials to send to which events. “It’s a poster child for tone deafness.’” Barack Obama’s French kiss-off: The president’s decision to skip the Paris march raises eyebrows

“But wait… isn’t somebody missing from this picture? In what is possibly one of the worst games of Where’s Waldo in history, the fine folks at Weasel Zippers notice that Eric Holder doesn’t seem to be on the scene.

twitter 011214Nobody from the US govt marched in Paris today… not even Eric Holder

From an honest Democrat. “Sunday, President Obama morally abdicated his place as the leader of the free world.

His decision to stay home instead of standing side by side with French President Hollande as millions marched in Paris in solidarity with the slain journalists of Charlie Hebdo in opposition to radical Islam – an enemy fiercer than we have seen in decades – sent a clear message to the world: Obama just doesn’t care.

His words about the horrendous terrorist attack this week were not enough. They came off as inauthentic at best and offensive at worst.” Obama AWOL in Paris: Message to America, allies is we don’t care

“You won’t find it in the American media, but the U.K. Daily Mail has obtained confirmation from an administration spokesman that President Obama spent much of yesterday watching the NFL Playoffs (as I speculated).

According to an administration official, President Obama spent part of his Sunday afternoon watching a National Football League game on television.”

Confirmed: Obama watched NFL playoffs instead of going to Paris

From an ex-Lefty. “So why didn’t POTUS show up?  A liberal friend emailed me that it was admittedly a “political mistake.”  ”Political,” yes, but “mistake”?  I doubt the decision was made innocently or even faintly by mistake.   Obama is a man known for his political expediency more than anything, indeed above anything, and also for being a constant campaigner.  It was obvious that going to Paris would have been good public relations and that therefore not attending was a deliberate choice.

There had to have been a reason for his non-attendance and the bizarre dissing of this event by his administration. I believe it stems from this: There are two words our president seems constitutionally unable to put together — “Islamic” and “terrorism.”  For Obama (and, as a sideshow, the zany Howard Dean), these terms are mutually exclusive, an oxymoron.  Appearing in Paris, Obama might be put in the unusual position of having to link them, our complaisant press rarely having the nerve to ask such an impertinent question.  Holder, in a television interview from Paris (I think it was CNN — there have been so many), danced around the question, hemming and hawing as if he couldn’t quite make out what was being said or had been asked an embarrassing question about  IRS emails.” #BarackNEstPasCharlie: Why Didn’t Obama Go to Paris?

“Just how low is this president prepared to go?  How embarrassing is it that the United States gave so little serious thought to yet more bloody proof that Islamic terrorism is on the rise, and not at all in a “JV” way?  Obama’s pathetic appeasement and preference for “leading from behind” have become an international tragedy.  His denial of the obvious, much of it his own doing, is catastrophic for the world, not just for the United States.” Silence of the Lamb

Democrats

From many of the comments: “Democrats must be polling badly.” “ Senior Democrats, dissatisfied with the party’s tepid prescriptions for combating income inequality, are drafting an “action plan” that calls for a massive transfer of wealth from the super-rich and Wall Street traders to the heart of the middle class.

The centerpiece of the proposal, set to be unveiled Monday by Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), is a “paycheck bonus credit” that would shave $2,000 a year off the tax bills of couples earning less than $200,000. Other provisions would nearly triple the tax credit for child care and reward people who save at least $500 a year.

The windfall — about $1.2 trillion over a decade — would come directly from the pockets of Wall Street “high rollers” through a new fee on financial transactions, and from the top 1 percent of earners, who would lose billions of dollars in lucrative tax breaks.” Democrats, in a stark shift in messaging, to make big tax-break pitch for middle class

Let’s hope these folks do what’s right for the country by reaching across the aisle. “Reacting to early signs that President Obama and the Democratic rump in Congress is lurching to the Left, centrists are complaining bitterly that the left-wing Elizabeth Warren wing of the party is taking control.

Liberal Democrats say centrist grumbling is sour grapes over their decimation in the midterm election.

Obama cannot discount the shrinking centrist group because they can cross the aisle and hand the new GOP’s new Senate majority victories on everything from the Keystone XL oil pipeline and banking reforms, to dismantling Obamacare.” Centrist angst over Dems’ leftward lurch

Free Speech

I love her spunk! I wish more people in the entertainment industry would speak up like this. “Underwood, who stands for traditional American values, issued the following statement in response to the attacks on her new song, which just hit #1 on the Country charts this week.

“I’m not the first person to sing about God, Jesus, faith [or] any of that, and I won’t be the last. And it won’t be the last for me, either. If you don’t like it, change the channel,” she said.” ATHEISTS WON’T STOP CARRIE UNDERWOOD FROM SINGING ABOUT FAITH: ‘IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, CHANGE THE CHANNEL’

Illegal Immigration

Terrific. “Leaked internal training documents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reveal Border Patrol agents are now receiving guidelines instructing them that the vast majority of illegal immigrants in the U.S. are off limits to federal agents and are substantially immune to detention and deportation. A trusted federal agent in the CBP provided exclusive copies of the documents to Breitbart Texas and also agreed to an interview on the condition of anonymity.” EXCLUSIVE: CATCH AND RELEASE 2.0 — LEAKS HIGHLIGHT TEARDOWN OF IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT

“But recently that has changed.  Now, for the first time in American history, an entire class of persons, a class that numbers in the millions, has been given broad, de jure amnesty and immunity from both federal and state laws.  In this class of people are those who have been characterized as the undocumented (i.e., illegal) immigrants. (snip)

American voters have to decide whether or not they want their government to establish a privileged class of residents who live off of their taxes.  As their property taxes go up, as fees on their cell phones, license plates, natural gas and electricity bills go up, they can think about the privileged few who have a lot of those expenses subsidized.” The New Privileged Class: Illegal Immigrants

“President Obama’s new deportation amnesty will impose “billions of dollars in costs” on states, they told a federal court this week — including more than $130 for each Texas driver’s license issued to illegal immigrants under the policy.

More than 1,100 pages of documents submitted by Texas and two dozen other states suing to stop the amnesty detail the costs in depth, and include sworn affidavits from state officials, federal immigration officers and others arguing that the amnesty will increase illegal immigration, leaving the states with even bigger burdens.” Obama amnesty to impose billions in costs on states, lawsuit alleges

Leftism

Emphasis mine. “As times go on the stories about how far and how fast the economy of Venezuela has fallen apart become ever more dramatic. They now actually have the Army, seriously, the armed forces, guarding food supplies. And the police are handing out toilet paper. We can just about imagine such things happening in the wake of some massive natural disaster, the levee breaks, the hurricane comes ashore, but not as day after day activity as something normal for the nation. But there has been no natural disaster in Venezuela, this is just the result of some years of idiot socialism. What makes it all so tragic is that there was and is another way to achieve the stated aim: making the poor better off. And when we consider what we might want to do to make the poor better off we’d better pay attention to this, admittedly extreme, example.

Here’s the news report:

Shoppers thronged grocery stores across Caracas today as deepening shortages led the government to put Venezuela’s food distribution under military protection.

Long lines, some stretching for blocks, formed outside grocery stores in the South American country’s capital as residents search for scarce basic items such as detergent and chicken.

Police inside a Luvebras supermarket in eastern Caracas intervened to help staff distribute toilet paper and other products. (snip)

There’s absolutely nothing wrong at all with the intention of making the poor better off. Indeed, I share that aim: that’s why I’m this capitalist free marketeer type, as it’s the only socio-economic system we’ve ever had that has made the poor substantially better off for any period of time. However, there are good ways and bad ways of going about doing this and if we want to succeed in our aim, in the US, of making the poor better off then we’d do well to pay attention.

The short answer is don’t screw with the market. The Ghastly Economic Mess In Venezuela And How To Avoid It (Hint, Don’t Raise The Minimum Wage)

Obamacare

I have no words… “All of which raises a question: If annual physicals are worthless, why did Dr. Emanuel and his accomplices build them into PPACA? Their clinical limitations have long been known, and the President was called out as early as 2008 on his claim that such preventive care would reduce health care expenditures. Nine months before he was elected, the New England Journal of Medicine reported, “Barack Obama has argued that ‘too little is spent on prevention and public health.’… Our findings suggest that the broad generalizations [about preventive care] made by many presidential candidates can be misleading.”EZEKIEL EMANUEL: GO RATION YOURSELF: Obamacare advisor says not to bother with annual wellness visit

President Obama

We’re in the best of hands. “It’s high time the news media paid more attention to Valerie Jarrett. An old Chicago friend of both Barack and Michelle Obama’s, she exercises unusual influence in the White House as a “senior adviser.” Many in Washington believe that she is at the heart of the disappointment the Obama administration has become. They are unwilling to say so in public. But the evidence keeps piling up. (snip)

More and more people in Washington do have advice for Obama — on the conduct of his administration. No one I spoke to believes he will follow it, but they all agree that the organizational lines of authority at the White House need to be better observed, that there should be better communication with both parties on Capitol Hill, and that the decision-making process should involve more people and be less directed toward short-term political fixes (most of which haven’t worked). So far the Obama administration’s management style has guaranteed only one thing: The only long-term fixed presence in the Obama White House is Valerie Jarrett, the person who mentored the careers of both Barack and Michelle Obama a quarter of a century ago and who remains glued to their sides to this day.” Valerie Jarrett, Obama’s ‘Berlin Wall’: The woman insiders describe as the president’s “real chief of staff” keeps out bad news and new ideas.

Just say no to big government

Stories of the Day

Thanks Obama and all you BIG GOVERNMENT, “GOVERNMENT CAN SOLVE ALL OF OUR ILLS” DEMOCRATS… “Lagasse shared his thoughts on TNT’s On the Menu. He predicts that if the government doesn’t start getting out of the way, the American restaurant industry will split and leave entrepreneurs and start-ups behind. American restaurants will consist only of high-end establishments like the ones Lagasse owns, fast food and chain restaurants, because no one else will be able to succeed.” Famed Chef Emeril Lagasse Says Obama May Drive Him Broke

BIG GOVERNMENT ON STEROIDS.  “He mocked the federal government’s extreme low-ball on the cost of regulations at $127 billion. “Too often, regulatory impacts don’t get measured. But further, the disruption of market processes and the derailment of wealth, safety and health creating processes themselves are for the most part wholly neglected. We can say, circa 2015, according to back of the envelope surveys, roundups and placeholders, with gaps big enough to fit the beltway through, that up to $1.882 trillion annually — and in many categories perhaps considerably more — is a defensible assessment,” he wrote in his report.” Federal regs cost $1.88 trillion, more with Obama’s ‘pen and phone’ rules

But don’t worry. We’ve got all of those experts in Washington D.C. on the case. They’ll surely solve this problem! “A new report by Moody’s Investors Service finds that public pensions are $2 trillion short of the amount they owe current and future retirees. “Combined with large unfunded liabilities, aging plan demographics effectively transfer costs incurred by a previous generation onto the present one, increasing the burden on current government operations,” the report stated. More troubling is the fact that the pension shortfalls have expanded dramatically even as pension systems “were earning close to their currently expected returns,” stated the report.” PUBLIC PENSIONS $2 TRILLION SHORT OF WHAT THEY OWE RETIREES

And don’t forget that President Obama wants to do the same thing in Afghanistan too. Emphasis mine. “Dexter Filkins has long been a skeptic and critic of the Iraq war, from his tenure at the New York Times to his current assignment at the New Yorker. Still, that hasn’t kept Filkins from reporting honestly on developments in the theater; in 2008, while at the NYT, he wrote extensively about the success of the surge just a few months before the presidential election. A month later, Filkins wrote again about the “literally unrecognizable” and peaceful Iraq produced by the surge. Six years later, Filkins was among the skeptics reminding people that the Iraqis’ insistence on negotiating the immunity clause for American troops was more of a welcome excuse for Obama to choose total withdrawal — and claim credit for it until this year — rather than the deal-breaker Obama now declares that it was. Yesterday, Filkins told Hugh Hewitt that while one can argue whether the 2003 invasion was ill-advised, the total withdrawal in 2011 was the worst strategic mistake made by the US.” Audio: Iraq War critic says Iraq withdrawal may have been the worst strategic mistake of all

Sleep well America: Cutting costs in all the wrong places. “The U.S. Navy’s latest shipbuilding plan would see its attack submarine fleet diminish from 55 to 41 boats in the next decade and a half. That decision, confirmed in August, was eclipsed by the advance of ISIL, war in Gaza, and sedition in Ukraine. But the Navy’s announcement—the single-largest strategic consequence of this administration’s defense cuts—has the most far-reaching ramifications of the summer’s events.” A Naval Disaster in the Making: The misbegotten plan to shrink the U.S. submarine fleet.

More On the Big Story From Yesterday

“Mr. Strelka can’t hide forever. Judge Bates is fed up with Department’s delays and ordered the list of documents Mr. Holder and Mr. Obama have been hiding for years now on their Fast and Furious scheme. Soon, Judge Sullivan could appoint a special prosecutor or demand production of the back-up server’s emails, or give Judicial Watch additional discovery after October 17. One thing is for certain. Mr. Holder didn’t just wake up today and decide he wanted to go fishing. There are truths underlying this resignation that will be shocking when they surface. Mr. Holder will no longer have the shield of the Attorney General and the Department of Justice to protect him from congressional, grand jury, or other subpoenas. The next question is: Which criminal lawyer will he hire to defend him and how soon? The hiding places are filling up faster than you can say “you’re running out of time.” Eric Holder Runs from a Ticking Time Bomb: IRS Deadline Approaches Fast, Federal Judges are Furious—and Where’s Andrew Selka?

“Eric Holder’s legal mercies have typically been reserved for Clinton donors and unrepentant terrorists, but his decision yesterday to step down as attorney general of the United States after nearly six years is an act of mercy toward the American public. In an administration characterized by outsized misadventures — from the use of the nation’s tax bureau to suppress political opponents to the use of secret waiting lists at government hospitals that killed American servicemen — Eric Holder managed to make his Justice Department a source of special, nay, historic attention: In June 2012, Holder became the first U.S. attorney general to be held in contempt by the House of Representatives. He earned every vote. [Snip] As for Holder, his time in the spotlight may not be over. The congressional investigation into Operation Fast and Furious, and other dubious Department of Justice activities, continues, and Holder may — and likely should — find himself facing further congressional inquiry. Regardless, the end of Holder’s death grip on law enforcement at the federal level is long overdue. Perhaps now the Justice Department can get back to delivering actual justice.” Eric Holder’s Rap Sheet

Interesting theory you have there Mr. Simon. “Now I have a theory about the etiology of Holder’s fixation on race. When you know deep down you’re a dishonest person, when you have had to eat the bitter pill of your own corruption who knows how many times (even Clinton finally admitted that he had gone too far pardoning Rich and damaged his own reputation), you have to invent a narrative for yourself to justify your activities.  So over may years Holder developed what I have called elsewhere a “nostalgia for racism.”  No matter that racism was diminishing in our culture, he had to keep racism alive, believe it was alive.  If racism were going away, he would no longer have a raison d’être, an excuse for his biased behavior, an excuse, as it turned out, to go beyond the law, act unilaterally and punish political enemies. Toward this end, in a sense, Holder encouraged racism, as did Obama.  They are both slightly more polished versions of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.  Like Jackson and Sharpton, they act as if they care about the black man or woman in the street, but in actuality they just care about themselves.  The racial posturing is a form of moral narcissism that works to preserve racism, not to defeat it. It’s not by accident black America is suffering under Obama/Holder.  At least subconsciously, it’s by design.” Dosvedanya, Holder: America’s First Soviet Attorney General Steps Down

Amnesty/Illegal Immigration

“Immigration and Customs Enforcement released thousands of illegal-alien families from this summer’s border surge – the large majority of those who were apprehended – with instructions to report to the particular ICE office at their final destination. DHS has repeatedly refused to say how many of them actually show up as directed. Well, the AP secured a recording of “a confidential meeting at its [ICE’s] Washington headquarters with immigration advocates” where ICE acknowledged that 70 percent of those released “never showed up weeks later for follow-up appointments.” [Snip] No wonder morale among DHS employees is “abysmal.” And the circumstances of this revelation are also outrageous. We only know this information because of a leaked audio recording (kudos to the whistleblower, whoever it is) from a meeting with anti-enforcement activists undoubtedly whining about how cruel ICE is.” 70 Percent of Illegals Released by ICE Don’t Appear for Follow-up Appointments

Of course they didn’t. Who thought they would? This is precisely what amnesty shills have in mind when they demand “due process” for illegals. You’re detained, you’re given a date to meet with immigration agents or appear before an immigration judge to decide whether you’ll be deported, and then you’re sent on your merry way into the United States — never to be seen by the state again. The point of “due process” is to give illegals an easy way to avoid the process. DHS understands this. So rest easy. Our immigration system is working exactly the way it’s supposed to.” DHS secret revealed: Tens of thousands of illegals released during the border crisis didn’t show up for their immigration hearings

“On the one hand, the fact that almost none of the tens of thousands of illegal arrivals during the last few months showed up for their scheduled immigration hearings is not news at all. It was so predictable as to be virtually inevitable, a foregone conclusion. On the other hand it’s big news, or should be. It means that our immigration laws are not just broken, they are a joke. What’s more, everyone knows it, including and perhaps especially the illegal immigrants entering our country, who plan at the outset to take full advantage of the situation.” And this is news why?

“Citigroup has figured out where its bread is buttered, and has signed on to the agenda to engineer an electorate that will keep the Democrats in power permanently, as Ed Lasky explained earlier this week. The Illinois Review (and almost nobody else in the media) reveals:

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced that Chicago will join New York and Los Angeles in a corporate-funded push to try to get more immigrants to become voting U.S. citizens. [Snip]

Remember the days when fat cat bankers were presumed to be Republicans? It’s a whole new era, in which crony capitalism rules, and big government stands ready to bail out the giant banks.  Big government and big banks are brother and sister now, and only those crude tea partiers really bother to object. If you do business with Citi, keep in mind whom you are supporting (and giving your financial data to).” Citigroup funding left wing immigrant voter registration drive

Climate Change

“Mr. Williamson goes on to describe some horrific examples of environmental disasters wrought by the leaders of socialist governments during the twentieth century.  His article is worth a read. Since capitalism is an economic system separate from government, as opposed to socialism, there are    checks and balances in place.  Some of these come from government regulation (which ideally should be minimal), but are primarily derived from the forces of competition within the market. The primary problem with socialism is that once you have the regulators and the regulated working for the same people, mismanagement and corruption inevitably occur and become pervasive.   Environmental nightmares naturally ensue.” It’s All About System Change (to Socialism), Not Climate Change

“As horrific as de Blasio’s crime was, it pales in comparison to the carnage President Obama routinely inflicts upon the animal kingdom. His victims include: bald eagles, golden eagles, kit foxes, baby tortoises, and baby bats. Obama’s preferred methods of killing are significantly more brutal, including decapitation via wind turbine and incineration via solar panel heat laser. The mainstream media has done its best to ignore this trend, but it’s only a matter of time before the American people wake up and demand an end to the butchery.” Liberal Politicians Can’t Stop Killing Innocent Creatures: NYC mayor slaughters lovable groundhog in brutal death smash

Hillary Clinton

You really MUST click on over and read the entire thing. “The article had to do with Chozick’s bathroom habits. Every time she felt the urge, a representative of the Clintons would accompany her to the ladies’ room. Every time. And not only would the “friendly 20-something press aide” stroll with Chozick to the entrance of the john. She also “waited outside the stall.” As though Chozick were a little girl. If it was not embarrassing enough to be chaperoned to the water closet by a recent college graduate no doubt beaming with righteousness and an entirely undeserved and illusory sense of self-importance, some earnest and vacant and desperate-to-be-hip Millennial whose affiliation with the Clintons, whose involvement in their various schemes, consists of nothing more than her uniform of white shirt and silk scarf—if this was not on its own an indignity and an insult for a correspondent of the New York Times, when Chozick asked for comment on the bathroom police, she received the following response:

Craig Minassian, a spokesman for the initiative, directed me to a press release about American Standard’s Flush for Good campaign to improve sanitation for three million people in the developing world. ‘Since you are so interested in bathrooms and CGI,’ Mr. Minassian said. The Golden Bowl: Column: Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Global Initiative, and our supine media

The Left

The Left exposed as hypocrites once again.Andrew Sullivan, a conservative who largely became an Obama booster, is equally incredulous: “The way in which Obama supporters have lamely acquiesced to this reckless war fomented by a dangerous executive power-grab is more than a little depressing. It strikes me as uncomfortably close to pure partisanship. I can’t imagine them downplaying the folly of this if a Republican president were in charge.” Now of course a president’s strongest partisans will give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to controversial policies. And of course they will be quicker to jump on a president of the opposing party. But war, and peace, would seem to be one of those issues that would trump ideological allegiances.” Defanging the Left: Why liberals are staying silent on Obama’s war

“The progressive project that, in various forms, consumed most of the twentieth century, ran out of ideological justification with the fall of the Soviet Union and the transformation of China into… something more approaching Nazi Germany than the Communist Project. This has taken the certainty from under the followers of the left. The smarter ones, surely, know their ideology is rubbish and there isn’t a working example of a top-down socialist/communist society in the world that is self-sustaining, let alone competes with the US in innovation and creation at any level. Even the not so smart ones have to have an inkling. They can no longer point to the USSR and tell us if only we knew its wonders we’d convert. Their leaders are old, their ideas are depleted. They, in the parlance of my kids generation “got nothing.” So instead of real belief they have the desperate clutching at the appearance of belief and conformity, the appearance of being right. They’ve done so much for the cause, most of these celebrities and ideologues, that to backtrack now would be unthinkable. They’d have to face themselves in the morning and realize that they supported causes and movements that killed a hundred million people worldwide and held far more in abject squalor. They can’t do that. Courage was never their strong suit, otherwise they wouldn’t have gone along with the crowd after the fall of the USSR. So they just want us to “shut up already” and “die” so that in their totalitarian version of reality no little voice shall mar their self image.” The Future Must Belong to Those Who Question

War on Women

We hope that the smart women among us will wake up to the fact that this is a “manufactured war.” “The “war on women” is back, and more tendentious than ever. Democrats are replaying one of their greatest hits of 2012 in their furious battle to minimize their midterm losses in a political environment defined by an unpopular president and general unease. And why not? The war on women has a proven record of success — in mobilizing Democratic women and trumping what would otherwise seem much more important issues — and it is so simple that any idiot can run on it. The recipe is one part taking offense where clearly none was intended, and one part discerning new nefarious schemes to deny women access to birth control.” The Incredibly Insipid War on Women 2.0

happy

Today, we have something to be happy about. Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney General, has resigned. Whoo hoo!

Stories of the Day

The most lawless Attorney General our country has ever seen is resigning. Thank God. “What can be said about Eric Holder’s six years as attorney general that PJ Media hasn’t already said?  The news that Holder is going to resign should be bittersweet to anyone who cares about racial equality and the rule of law.  The damage he has already done to the country leaves a turbulent wake that is ill-matched to the financial reward awaiting him at a shameless and large Washington, D.C., law firm. Our country is more polarized and more racially divided because of Eric Holder.  He turned the power of the Justice Department into a racially motivated turnout machine for the Democratic Party.  That was his job in this administration, and he did it well. When I first reported on the racially motivated law enforcement of Holder’s Justice Department, it seemed fanciful to some. But after six years of Holder hugging Al Sharpton, stoking racial division in places like Florida and Ferguson, after suing police and fire departments to impose racial hiring requirements, after refusing to enforce election laws that protect white victims or require voter rolls to be cleaned, after launching harassing litigation against peaceful pro-life protesters, after incident after incident of dishonesty and contempt before Congress — after all this, it was clear to anyone with any intellectual honesty that this man had a vision of the law at odds with the nation’s traditions.” Goodbye, Eric, and Good Riddance: Cashing in on lawlessness.

“Bad cabinet members come and go, but Eric Holder leaves behind a legacy that I believe will haunt the nation for decades. What is that legacy? Again I turn to Adams:

Holder’s tenure represents the beginnings of a post-Constitutional era, where the chief law enforcement officer of the United States serves to dismantle legal traditions. Holder is the first attorney general to whom law seemed to be an option, a suggestion on the way to a progressive future. Most folks, and most lawyers, who didn’t devote daily attention to him might not have noticed the ground shifting during his tenure. But shift it did, and very deliberately.

Law, like liberty, is a tenuous thing. Failing to understand the sources of domestic tranquility, the sources of your relatively good life, usually also means failing to recognize the threats to that pleasant tranquility. Holder used his time at Justice to do things that corrode the rule of law. Law and liberty are precious things, and Holder did enormous damage to both.” HOLDER TO LEAVE, BUT HIS STAIN WILL LINGER

“If there is any justice, after the Obama era mercifully draws to a close, Holder will be prosecuted for a litany of abuses that have been ably documented by J. Christian Adams in Injustice: Exposing the Racial Agenda of the Obama Justice Department and by John Fund and Hans von Spakovsky in Obama’s Enforcer: Eric Holder’s Justice Department. But don’t hold your breath waiting for justice to be done. Like President Barack Hussein Obama, Holder knows he is immune from criticism because he is black. Holder possesses an ugly combination of creepy self-righteousness, cockiness, hatred of country, and racist contempt for white Americans that make him the darling of the activist Left and the mainstream media which refuses to report on his many, many misdeeds. Holder is an invaluable member of the Obama cabinet because he knows where the bodies are buried. Chances are he buried those bodies. He is not We the People’s lawyer but instead serves as a personal consigliere, or mob lawyer, to the highest elected gangster in the land, President Obama.” Eric Holder Out, Special Prosecutor to Follow?

“Thanks to his stonewalling of the House of Representatives investigation into the Fast and Furious scandal, in 2012  Eric Holder became the first Attorney General held in contempt by Congress. Maybe his resignation on Thursday will revive the story for the three broadcast network evening newscasts, but don’t count on it. With Sharyl Attkisson no longer working at CBS News, there is no broadcast journalist who has shown any interest in pursuing this disgraceful story.” Eric Holder’s Fast and Furious Fiasco Was Media Scandal, Too

“In light of a federal judge denying a request from the Department of Justice to delay the release of a long-sought after Fast and Furious document list, the sister of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, Kelly Terry-Willis, doesn’t find the timing of Attorney General Eric Holder’s resignation to be a coincidence.  I do not find it a coincidence that Eric Holder chose now to resign after Judge Bates denied the request from the DOJ to delay the release of the Fast and Furious documents. I personally think Eric Holder was really hoping that the documents would never be made public to my family and the American people,” Terry-Willis tells Townhall. “Will we ever get the accountability for my brother, Brian, Jaime Zapata and every other person who lost their lives to the guns from this horrific scandal? I don’t know, but I have a serious gut feeling when we finally see what is in those documents….the dynamics of this investigation are going to change and hopefully the people involved are brought to justice. Eric Holder can run, but there will be no hiding. The truth always reveals itself.”  EXCLUSIVE – Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry’s Sister on Timing of Holder Resignation: “Not a Coincidence”

“Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton said in a statement on Thursday that Attorney General Eric Holder is resigning as his group is close to nailing the Department of Justice on Operation Fast and Furious.” JUDICIAL WATCH: HOLDER WENT DOWN AS WE FORCED DOJ’S HAND ON FAST AND FURIOUS IN COURT

“The resignation — if that’s what it is — of Attorney General Eric Holder signals the end of one of the most divisive tenures in the history of the cabinet. It was no doubt inevitable after Mr. Holder was determined, in a bi-partisan vote, to be in criminal contempt of the 112th United States House. He became the only sitting cabinet officer in history to be so found. He reacted to the contempt finding with more contempt. From that point on his tenure in office was unsustainable.” The Eric Holder Tragedy

“Holder and his supporters, who know these decisions violate the Constitution but kept silent because of their partisan support for Obama, will rue their abuse of presidential power. Future presidents will be able to change tax rates or refuse to prosecute political supporters under these theories. Future conservative presidents may use the same claim to start dismantling the overgrown welfare state without the assent of Congress. We happily see Holder go, but he will have more regret not just looking back at the controversies that wracked the Department of Justice under his care, but when he ponders the future when conservative AGs turn his precedents against the bloated welfare state that he loves.” Why Eric Holder Will Regret His Recklessness

“Those are difficult subjects to bring up in a midterm cycle that already looks bad for Obama, so … why resign now, rather than after the election? The White House is apparently worried that a Republican takeover of the Senate will make confirmation of Holder’s replacement very difficult unless Obama appoints someone Republicans like. Resigning now allows Obama to appoint a replacement soon, and Senate Democrats to schedule the hearings during the lame-duck session (and don’t forget Harry Reid’s rule change on filibusters for presidential appointments, too, which expires at the end of this session). But naming a replacement for Holder carries significant political risks if it happens ahead of the midterms, too; if Obama picks someone too radical, Republicans will jump all over the choice in Senate races, and warn that the Democratic incumbents (or challengers, as the case may be) will be a rubber stamp for confirmation. It really puts the rubber-stamp issue front and center in the Senate races, which is exactly what Democrats who are trying to distance themselves from Obama didn’t need. This is a resignation that would have been better timed for Obama in June, especially with the focus falling on foreign policy, and finished up before most voters started paying attention to the midterms.” Breaking: Holder resigning as AG

Arizona

Senator McCain pondering a run at six more years in Washington DC. “Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has begun to have serious conversations with state officials and local powerbrokers about running for a sixth term in the Senate. The longtime Republican senator is expected to face a tougher challenger and would be a major target for Tea Party groups, given his support for a Senate immigration bill granting a path to citizenship for workers living in the U.S. illegally. And McCain, who turned 78 last month, has, at times, suggested he’s willing to hang it up, telling the entertainment website The Wrap earlier this year that he didn’t “want to be one of these old guys that should’ve shoved off.” But more recently, McCain has given every indication that he wants to stay in the upper chamber, even after three decades as a senator. “I’m leaning toward it,” McCain told The Hill when asked about running for reelection.” McCain gets ready for race of his life

Common Core

Spread the word: a vote for Democrat David Garcia for Arizona Superintendent of Schools is a vote for Common Core. “This is the year new national Common Core tests kick in, replacing state tests in most locales, courtesy of an eager Obama administration and the future generation’s tax dollars. It’s also the first year a majority of people interviewed tell pollsters they’ve actually heard of Common Core, four years after bureaucrats signed our kids onto this complete overhaul of U.S. education. Common Core has impressed everyone from Bill Gates to U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. So why do 62 percent of parents think it’s a bad idea? For one, they can count. But their kids can’t.” Top Ten Things Parents Hate About Common Core: It’s the first school year most parents have heard about Common Core. And they don’t like it one bit.

Elections

Who would’ve seen this coming? Median family income continuing to fall under Obama’s leftist policies. “So President Goldman Sachs delivered big returns to the fatcats, at the expense of everyone else. Go figure.” MAYBE THIS IS WHY OBAMA’S POLLING BADLY EVEN IN BLUE STATES: William Galston: The Recovery That Left Out Almost Everybody.

The Green Movement and Communism

“Strange thing about Flood Wall Street, the financial-district protest that followed the People’s Climate March: Nobody had much to say about the climate — what they came to talk about wascapitalism. “Stop Capitalism,” “End Capitalism,” “Capitalism Kills,” the placards read. Kshama Sawant, the socialist Seattle city-council member who funds her crusade against capitalism by being married to a man with Microsoft money, called for a “radical, militant” movement linking environmental concerns to such traditional socialist enterprises as heavy government intervention into targeted industries, including energy and transportation. [Snip] Under a system that imposed heavy government regimentation upon the economy, direct government ownership of the “commanding heights” of the economy (and the commanded heights, too), a socialist vision of property, etc., the environmental results were nothing short of catastrophic. Setting aside the direct human costs of socialist environmental policy in the twentieth century — the famines, the deformations, the horrific birth defects — socialism was a disaster from the purely environmental point of view, too.” Capitalism Is Clean(er): Red isn’t green.

Click on over to see what an American Communist/Socialist American looks like. There are lots of pictures of them. “Communists along with a few environmental groups staged a “People’s Climate Rally” in Oakland, California on Sunday, September 21, in conjunction with the larger “People’s Climate March” in New York City on the same day. Wait — did I say communists? Isn’t that a bit of an exaggeration? Well…no. At the New York event, many people noticed that gee, there sure are a lot of communists at this march. But in Oakland — always on the cutting edge — the entire “climate change” movement at last fully, irrevocably and overtly embraced communism as its stated goal. Any concerns about “optics” or operating in “stealth mode” were abandoned. The “climate change” “crisis” is now nothing but the latest justification for “total revolution” and getting rid of capitalism forever.” Climate Movement Drops Mask, Admits Communist Agenda

“Our direct influence on global warming is highly limited, even if you assume the science is completely settled. As a country, we could end our emissions entirely, and it would barely cause a blip in the cumulative carbon buildup in the atmosphere.” The futility of the climate protest

The Left

Wait, I thought immigrants escaped their countries to escape totalitarianism. I don’t think they’re going to like what they see once the Left takes over everything. “President Obama and his fellow Democrats are scheming to use immigration and housing policy to fulfill their dream to fundamentally transform America forever. Over a decade ago, two liberals-John Judis and  Rus Teixeira-wrote a book, The Emerging Democratic Majority, that predicted demographic changes would inevitably lead to a Democratic lock on Congress and the White House. Their argument since has been updated by both of them and by others. Back in 2009, Teixeira wrote that “that demographic and geographic “trends should take America down a very different road than has been traveled in the last eight years. A new progressive America is on the rise.” The Plot to Create a Permanent Democratic Majority

I know, it’s Dick Morris. But we know what he writes is true. “Morris — author with Eileen McGann of the new book, “Power Grab: Obama’s Dangerous Plan for a One Party Nation,” published by Humanix Books — said the president’s plan is not about persuading Americans by traditional means, which “would be legit.” “It’s by bringing in millions of immigrants to screw up the voter rolls and by massive photo fraud with no photo ID so that he can use ACORN volunteers to produce artificial results,” Morris said.
“It’s getting everybody into a labor union whether they like it or not, to help control their votes. “And the most insidious part is Obamacare; to give everybody healthcare, food stamps, disability and Medicaid so that they all have skin in the game and something to lose if the Democrats lose. [Snip] “He wants to make it impossible for a private sector business to operate without the government’s explicit approval,” Morris said. “That means corruption, campaign contributions, not siding with the other side politically, that the EPA … has the life and death of your company in its hands.”
Morris said the recent IRS scandal — in which agency officials allegedly targeted conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status — was “designed to intimidate the activist and donor base so the Republican Party becomes a minor sideshow, not the main event.” “Dick Morris: Obama Wants to Make US a One-Party Nation

Because they know better… Emphasis mine. “This fall the University of California at Berkeley is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Free Speech Movement, a student-led protest against campus restrictions on political activities that made headlines and inspired imitators around the country. I played a small part in the Free Speech Movement, and some of those returning for the reunion were once my friends, but I won’t be joining them. Though the movement promised greater intellectual and political freedom on campus, the result has been the opposite. The great irony is that while Berkeley now honors the memory of the Free Speech Movement, it exercises more thought control over students than the hated institution that we rose up against half a century ago.The Unfree Speech Movement: I was among the student radicals at Berkeley in 1964, back when colleges actually had intellectual freedom.

Obamacare

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, chief architect of Obamacare, nudges us toward dying early as to not take up too many medical resources… “Normally, no one would care that in a recent Atlantic essay — “Why I Hope to Die at 75” — 57-year-old Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel argued that living to be 75 years old was long enough for anyone. After 75, Emanuel suggests, “We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic.” But Emanuel is no garden-variety crackpot. Nor is he a wannabe science-fiction writer dreaming of a centrally planned planet of robust youthful humanoids. Unfortunately, he was one of the chief architects of the troubled Affordable Care Act and a key medical advisor to the Obama administration. The ACA’s conservative critics have long knocked Obamacare as a first step toward medical rationing. Read Emanuel’s diatribe against living too long, and suddenly Sarah Palin’s attack on Obamacare’s “death panels” does not seem so far-fetched. Emanuel’s main point is that those who live beyond 75 inordinately gobble up collective health resources — like flu shots. Emanuel asserts that at age 75 and beyond, he will decline nearly all medical tests and treatments. (“What about simple stuff? Flu shots are out.”) He claims he won’t take antibiotics either.” Should We Hope to Die at 75? Contra Ezekiel Emanuel, age is no absolute barometer for human vitality and dignity.

Fight

Stories of the Day

So many of today’s Democrats refuse to acknowledge how far left their party has moved. And until they do, we are doomed. “We noted here the other day (“Propping Up Obama”) the agony of the left over Obama’s miserable performance of late. But there are other signs that leftism is falling apart just about everywhere. Item: Leftist French President Francois Hollande has dissolved the government and is trying to reform a new government that is a few micrometers closer to the center in the interest of minimal reform to get the economy growing. From the AP:

France has had effectively no economic growth this year, unemployment is hovering around 10 percent and Hollande’s approval ratings are sunk in the teens.

This is what happens when you run out of other people’s money. Funny how that always seems to happen to socialists. It’s what we call bad luck.” IS THE LEFT APPROACHING A KOOL-AID MOMENT?

Shameful. “IRS data on internal migration showing how many people have moved to and from which states generally shows people leaving high-taxed states and states with high unemployment to states doing better in those categories. Now Obama’s IRS is seeking to delay release of these statistics for another 12 months. For decades economists and lawmakers both have used this IRS data as a marker for which states are succeeding in America, but the Obama administration has show its disdain for this important metric. Obama’s IRS had once announced that it was going to discontinue to collect and release this data but was shamed by Congress into continuing to gather the statistics. Now the administration is seeking to delay the release of this data to three years out, making some of the data too late to be of use. ” IRS DELAYING RELEASE OF DATA ON PEOPLE LEAVING HIGH-TAX STATES

All you rich liberals on the east coast voted for him. So deal with it. “President Obama’s plan to schmooze Wall Street honchos at a Westchester fund-raiser Friday is grounding wealthy weekenders who planned to fly to the Hamptons or Nantucket for the Labor Day holiday. The FAA has issued a no-fly warning that extends for most of Friday and all day Saturday through Sunday, grounding seaplanes to East Hampton, Montauk, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. On Friday, Obama will be feted at the home of one of his top bundlers, 32 Advisors’ Robert Wolf, in the aptly-named Purchase, NY, with 250 high-rollers paying up to $32,000 each to bend Obama’s ear.” Obama’s ‘schmoozing’ will cause travel havoc

Lovely. “A new report from the West Point counterterrorism center says the administration ignored warning signs as the Islamic State grew and trained over a four-year period paralleling our withdrawal from Iraq. As President Obama dithers about whether to strike the Islamic State’s sanctuary in Syria, a report by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point shows how we got to this point. Obama simply overlooked the “JV” team until it was ready for terrorism’s Pro Bowl.” West Point Report: Obama Watched Islamic State Grow

Please pray that our law enforcement officials can stay ahead of this. “U.S. intelligence has picked up increased chatter among Islamist terror networks approaching the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and amid the continuing battle for supremacy between Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, current and former U.S. officials told TheBlaze. “We’ve noticed a significant increase in chatter among Islamic terrorist organizations overseas both on the Internet and phone lines,” said a U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter. “This is certainly concerning, but as of yet we can’t pinpoint what or if they are planning a particular attack. We did see this kind of increase in chatter before the September 11 attacks. We just hope the public continues to remain vigilant.” Intelligence agencies have registered similar spikes in threats to the U.S. ahead of previous 9/11 anniversaries.” U.S. Officials Say ‘Significant Increase’ in Jihadi Chatter Ahead of 9/11 Anniversary

Amnesty

Never let a good manufactured crisis go to waste. “This entire “crisis” of unaccompanied alien children (UAC’s) is purely trumped up by the White House, and sold by a duplicitous media, to advance a demand for comprehensive immigration reform. [Snip] This is NOT about 40,000 missing tickets. This is about 40,000 missing “UNACCOMPANIED” children. Only missing from official record keeping because they never existed in the first place. The kids are all ACCOMPANIED. ACCOMPANIED by their parents, aunts, uncles, and families….” Fraud Confirmed – The Ficticious Unaccompanied Alien Children No Longer Need Housing – Not Only Don’t The Numbers Match, But The Actual Need Is Now Non-Existent Hat Tip: Roberta Heine, Palo Verde RW member

Big Government

Sneaky. “President Obama is planning to use some legislative trickery to write a new climate change accord and bypass the Senate’s historic responsibility to approve treaties. Hey! At least he’s consistent in his lawbreaking. The Hill:

Obama’s climate team is putting together a “politically binding” deal to “name and shame” nations to cut their emissions, according to The New York Times.

The administration’s hope is to get the deal signed by a United Nations summit next year in Paris.

Because the Senate would be unlikely to ratify a treaty on global warming, the administration is seeking to mix fresh voluntary pledges with legally binding 1992 treaty conditions.

Such a deal, according to officials quoted by the Times, would represent an updated version of an existing deal, and would not require ratification by the Senate. [Snip]

The ploy to piggyback Obama’s proposal on a 1992 law violates the whole idea of separation of powers by giving the president treaty ratifying authority that the Constitution clearly reserved for the Senate. It’s cynically transparent in its skirting the Constitution to make legal what ordinarily would be illegal. For the president, democracy is just too hard.” Obama plans to ink climate deal without Senate approval

Common Core

“Dear Big Foot Center-Right Conservative Editors: I have spent most of the summer traveling the center-right circuit and have figured out that the advance of “Common Core” across the land is an enormous issue for  parents, whatever their ideological leanings on other issues.  It is widely and correctly understood to be disruptive by all and ruinous by many, and it is not believed to be remotely in the tradition of “local control” of American education. As for its results, well, many fear it is the thalidomide of ed reform.  Early results are not promising, as confusion about what it is and how it is to be implemented reign everywhere.  Ask even a seasoned education professional and you will be greeted with a barrage of cliches (sic0 and catch-phrases, and no one can point to a concise summary of what “Common Core” means and how and when it is to be introduced.  It has now entered the teacher hiring process, and “familiarity with Common Core concepts and transition” is a hiring criteria which, given its opaque  nature, is a cloak for any decision, whether hiring, firing, promotion, tenure or transfer. In short, many across the political spectrum fear that Common Core is to education reform what Obamacare has become to health care reform, a vast, slow moving train wreck with enormous costs and many casualties, mostly unseen but with the body count rising. So cover it.  Extensively.  Assign a team.  Dedicate a section of your website to Common Core stories and stats.” Memo To Jonathan Garthwaite, Bill Kristol, Rich Lowry, and Mark Tapscott: “Common Core” May Be The Thalidomide of Ed Reform. Cover It.

The Economy

Note to President Obama and the rest of you Democrats: When you saddle the country’s businesses with pages and pages and pages of new regulations, the economy is going to have a hard time getting out from under the weight of it all. “The U.S. economy has grown just 1.5 percent in the 2014 fiscal year — far slower than White House projections — while more than $500 billion of deficit spending was added to the national debt, according to projections released Wednesday by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.” US Economy Growing Slower than White House Predicted

“The Congressional Budget Office released a bit of a good news/bad news report on Wednesday regarding the state of the U.S. economy and federal budget. In the bad news column, CBO projected 2014’s GDP growth at just 1.5 percent. The report blamed this revision on “the surprising economic weakness in the first half of the year.” In early June, the International Monetary Fund projected the United States to grow by just 2 percent this year, revising its own estimate down from a previously anticipated 2.7 percent GDP expansion. This report is not likely to be warmly greeted by the White House.” CBO revises estimate, warns U.S. economic growth will underwhelm in 2014

Elections

Where would the Democrats be without all of their loyal “group thinkers?” “Nothing about that is out of the ordinary. The Democrats have today taken on the ideology of power. Barack Obama ran two vapid campaigns driven by a personality cult and enforced groupthink. He has chosen, and his people have accepted (thus far at least), Hillary Clinton as his successor, who virtually guarantees the same type of campaign all over again. Ideas are dangerous things, and liberals tend to keep their distance from them. Hence their decision to have Crist represent them in a key state.” In Picking Crist, Dems Look Beyond Florida

Vote him out! “As Republicans aim to take control of the Senate, with a bevy of red-state Democrats looking to be in trouble, Minnesota’s Senate race isn’t at the top of the GOP’s takeover list. But it heads the list of “sleeper” races—one of a handful of contests that have the potential to break late if the political environment is as toxic for Democrats as some national polls suggest. Unlike other Democratic senators responding to newfound challenges by engaging their opposition early, Franken is running an unusually low-key race, giving off the vibe that there’s nothing to see here. After I tweeted my Minnesota travel plans, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s communications director, Matt Canter, mocked the suggestion that this was a potentially competitive race.” Finding Al Franken: The comedian-turned-senator is running an unusually low-key reelection campaign, trying to avoid scrutiny. Will Republicans get the last laugh?

Global Warming

Oops. “President Obama once frequently touted Spain’s green energy economy. No longer. That’s no surprise given how things have worked out for the economically beleaguered country. According to a new report by the free-market Institute for Energy Research, Spain’s green energy policies have resulted in skyrocketing electricity prices, billions of euros in debt and rising carbon dioxide emissions. “For years, President Obama has pointed to Europe’s energy policies as an example that the United States should follow,” said IER in a statement on their new study. “However, those policies have been disastrous for countries like Spain, where electricity prices have skyrocketed, unemployment is over 25 percent, and youth unemployment is over 50 percent.” [Snip] The IER study also notes that Spain’s green agenda was not able to keep its carbon footprint from rising. Between 1994 and 2011, Spain’s carbon dioxide emissions grew 34.5 percent, despite the country’s green push which began in the 1990s.” Spain’s Green Economy: Skyrocketing Power Prices And Higher CO2 Emissions

The Democrats are going to ensure this extra control over ‘we the people’ one way or another. The Constitution be damned.  “Can’t get two-thirds of the Senate to approve a bit of Green Legislation you favor?  No problem!  Just pretend that the United States of America is subject not to its Constitution but to the transnational organization of gangsters, kleptocracies, and Third-World dictatorships known as the Untied Nations. Sound extreme? We can talk about the composition of the Untied Nations another time.  But when it comes to Barack Obama’s cavalier treatment of the Constitution, you need look no further than this morning’s New York Times. Under the headline “Obama Pursuing Climate Accord in Lieu of Treaty,” the paper explains how the president, frustrated by Congress’s unwillingness to barter away U.S. sovereignty by signing on to the so-called “Kyoto Protocol,” the economy blighting climate standards devised by Greenies and other folks eager to hamstring the world’s most productive economies, especially the Untied States, is planning to “sidestep” Congress.” Obama Tries for Kyoto 2.0

President Obama

“But what did they expect? Even before Obama’s first term, it was known that he had a famously cool style, few friends, and a history of being emotionally removed. His allies may not have done their homework on the character of the man they were electing, but his personality was no secret whatsoever. [Snip] I will never understand those who perceived Obama as “likeable,” as anything other than a cold guy. And I don’t think his high likeability scores were merely a function of people giving him the benefit of the doubt because of his race; I know plenty of people who really, really liked him. I am better able to understand those who didn’t know he was a leftist (despite all the “tells”), or who thought him so very brilliant (despite his failure to demonstrate anything special in that regard), than those who thought him warm or friendly or engaged with people in the way we’ve grown used to in presidents such as LBJ and Clinton and George W. Bush. Obama’s demeanor has always seemed chilly, offputting, and angry to me, with a thin veneer of affability covering it up. There was also no evidence whatsoever, pre-election, that Obama would be able to work effectively with people, and certainly none about his warmth or liking of people. The thing was, his supporters either imagined it was there when it was not, or somehow thought its lack wouldn’t matter. His brilliance would override everything. Well, we’ve seen how that’s worked out.” Obama the Aloof

“And why does the God fail? Because he’s not a god, of course. I found this interesting:

His supporters argue that his approach has been consistent with his strategy of returning the United States — after post-Sept. 11 wars — to a foreign policy built around economic engagement rather than military intervention. The question, though, is whether he is contradicting the pledge embraced in his 2009 Nobel Prize lecture: “to face the world as it is,” not as he would like it to be.”He thought he could change the tenor more easily than he could, and I think he thought the world would be more responsive to his desires than the world has proven to be,” said Jon B. Alterman, senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

This explains Obama’s failures as well as anything else: He speaks his platitudes with the zest of a man who thinks his audience is hearing all this for the first time, and he thinks his Magic Words can move mountains. And he has no Plan B for when this fails.” As Obama Offers “Don’t Do Stupid Shit” Theory of Foreign Policy, His Dwindling Band of Disciple-Defenders Offer “Shit Happens” Theory of Geopolitics

Veterans Administration

Our veterans are not at all in the best of hands. “A new report from the Philadelphia Inquirer shows that the VA has busied itself with an effort to cheer up veterans by asking its staff to think of them as … Oscar the Grouch?

The beleaguered Department of Veterans Affairs depicted dissatisfied veterans as Oscar the Grouch in a recent internal training guide, and some vets and VA staffers said Tuesday that they feel trashed.

The cranky Sesame Street character who lives in a garbage can was used in reference to veterans who will attend town-hall events Wednesday in Philadelphia. …

The slide show, “What to Say to Oscar the Grouch – Dealing with Veterans During Town Hall Claims Clinics,” was shown to employees who will staff those events. [Snip]

Referring to veterans unhappy with access to their care as Oscar the Grouch might in fact be part of the entire problem at the VA. Customer-service training is always a challenge because it has to engage staffers and capture their imagination a bit, but … Oscar the Grouch? One has to assume that most of these staffers had put a few years between themselves and their Sesame Street age. Forget for a moment the condescending tone that sets in regard to the patients — it’s almost as insulting to the staff. [Snip] I reached out to Pete Hegseth of Concerned Veterans for America, who said that this exposes “the dirty little secret about how many VA officials feel about veterans.” They see veterans as the problem, not the clients. “If veterans were seen as customers, they wouldn’t be seen as Oscar the Grouch,” Pete said. “This feeds the fears about how veterans believe they are perceived at the VA.” He assured me that CV4A will not let this slide, either.” VA customer relations training equates vets angry over care with … Oscar the Grouch

Stories of the Day

“Democrats had better pray that the 1918 comparison doesn’t hold up, because their defeat of 1918 was followed by the Democratic disaster of 1920, when Warren Harding swept the country on the platform of “return to normalcy” in the greatest victory percentage margin (60 to 34%) of the 20th Century and also cracked the Democratic “Solid South” for the first time since the Civil War era. Republicans will surely be hoping that history repeats itself.” 5 Reasons Why the 2014 Midterms Are Most Like … 1918

Inevitable. Leftist Democrat mayor takes over New York City and all hell breaks loose. “ The number of vagrants on the streets, and their aggression, is on the rise. The number of people sleeping in the City Hall and 33rd Street subway stations, the endpoints of my daily commute, is visibly higher, as is the level of vagrancy in Penn Station and Grand Central. The squeegee men are back, and their like-minded colleagues are setting up shop in churches. Violent crime around the city is up significantly. Central Park muggings and casual, racially motivated assaults are back in the news. In a city in which it is well-nigh impossible for me to carry a gun legally (I have held concealed-carry permits in other jurisdictions), shootings are up 12 percent. We are seeing increasingly Chicago-style headlines: Over one mid-August weekend, 21 people were shot. In 2012, there were no rapes in Central Park. By September of 2013, a month after the Community Safety Act was passed, there had been a half dozen, and felonies in the park were up 10 percent. Misdemeanor sex crimes in the park rose by 100 percent. Concession-stand workers were robbed at knifepoint, and this past weekend a woman was shot in the head with an airgun by a gang of black teens shouting, ‘White people suck!’” Decline and Fall: In New York, a pessimistic empire state of mind

Democrat party funded largely by taxpayer dollars which are funneled through public employee unions. Emphasis mine. “Noam Scheiber makes a good case for the importance of the Wisconsin governor’s race at the New Republic. But the most interesting thing comes in what Scheiber, perhaps inadvertently, admits. Referring to the limitations on public employee union bargaining imposed by Governor Scott Walker and the Republican legislature, Scheiber writes, “He’s effectively defunded a key Democratic constituency.” Let’s unpack that. Where do public employee unions get their money? Directly from dues paid by public employees, who in turn get that money from taxpayers. Where does that money go? Politically, almost entirely to the Democratic Party, as Scheiber admits. Public employee unions, whatever else they do, are (in almost all cases) a mechanism for mandatory taxpayer financing of one political party. Scheiber’s complaint is that Wisconsin Republicans have cut the amount of such public financing.” Letting the cat out of the bag on the role of public employee unions

How Obama’s approval rating floor is holding around 40 percent is beyond my comprehension. “Back in the 1980s, the Democratic Party media dubbed Ronald Reagan the “Teflon President.” By this, they meant that their false, dishonest and trivial attacks on Reagan didn’t sway the public, which appreciated the most meteoric economic recovery in modern history and restoration of America’s status as not just a great power, but a competent one. Something quite different is happening with Barack Obama. By any possible measure, he has been an awful president. His administration has been good for hedge fund managers and “green” energy scammers, but disastrous for working class Americans, especially African-Americans. Median income and household wealth are down, and let’s not even talk about foreign policy or the national debt. Yet, Obama’s approval ratings have a relatively high floor of around 40%.” BARACK OBAMA, THE TEFLON PRESIDENT

“All of a sudden, people have noticed that we are in trouble, and many are saying it isn’t the president’s fault. All the bad news, from Iraq to Ukraine, from Libya and Syria to the Mexican border, just seems to have happened: Obama was standing there, golfing or shaking hands with donors, and, like a burst of bad weather, the winds blew, the skies opened, and things went to hell. Mysterious forces conspired against him, terrible setbacks occurred for no reason, and we were left with effects without a cause. His supporters commiserate with him and note his bad fortune at being in office at a time when events make his life difficult. Or they worry about the effect of all these misfortunes on his legacy. “Can Obama Weather the Current Geopolitical S—storm?” Mother Jones’s David Corn wondered recently. Judging from recent poll numbers—36 percent approve of his conduct of foreign relations—the answer appears to be ‘no.’” Nobody’s Fault:  Liberals Make Excuses for Obama

The left is getting rid of religion one little bit at a time: “The Christian cleansing of Orange County Public Schools did not make national headlines. Their decision to banish the chaplains garnered no attention. And that’s why Pastor Schmidt decided to speak up.” “’We can’t stay silent any longer,’ he told me. “We can’t allow them to move into these areas that traditionally have always been a part of the football program.” But that’s exactly what FFRF is attempting to do – eradicate Christianity in the public marketplace of ideas. “Faith, family, football – have always gone together,” he said. “Here’s an organization like this coming in and trying to tear that out.” Pastor Schmidt said it’s time to do something. “We’re not going to give up,” he said. “We’re not going to give up on the team.” I’m glad Pastor Schmidt hasn’t given up because the school district, in an incredible act of cowardice, did give up. All it took was a threatening letter from the Freedom From Religious Foundation and the school leaders capitulated.”  Florida school district replaces football chaplains with “life coaches”

“While chatting with Brian Lamb, Rangel dropped a few falsehoods as casually as cigar ash. This isn’t to pick on Rangel; he’s just illustrative. His assertion — that the Republican and Democratic parties “changed sides” in the 1960s on civil rights, with white racists leaving the Democratic party to join the Republicans — has become conventional wisdom. It’s utterly false and should be rebutted at every opportunity.” The Myth of Republican Racism: As the South abandoned its prejudices, it shifted to the GOP.

Emphasis mine. “On Tuesday, the president spoke to the American Legion’s national convention, facing a crowd of veterans deeply concerned about widespread corruption at the Veterans Administration and the resultant deaths of some veterans awaiting health care. So when Obama began by lecturing the veterans about cynicism and explaining his most recent foreign policy choices — instead of addressing the VA crisis — the audience clearly wasn’t pleased. Fox News cameras captured a sea of blank or frowning faces looking silently back at the president as he paused for failed applause line after failed applause line.” Obama’s Speech To The American Legion Was Painfully Awkward [VIDEO]

“President Obama is enduring an awful summer of domestic troubles, foreign tragedies and a lost national narrative that’s put him on the defensive. He’ll try to recapture control of the country’s political dialogue next month by igniting an emotional controversy over legalizing illegal aliens. But Tuesday the Democrat was in Charlotte to describe to American Legion members an exotic foreign land where November voters should be delighted to keep his party members in office. Obama’s full text is available here. We’ve gathered some excerpts with our comments in italics to provide a flavor of the alien land this president sees through his bullet-proof windows. He doesn’t seem so much detached as delusional: “Even as we face, yes, the hard tasks of our time, we should never lose sight of our progress as a people or the strength of our leadership in the world. (Just take my word for it.) ….We are stronger at home. (What?) Over the past 53 months, our businesses have added nearly 10 million new jobs…. “Construction and housing are rebounding. Our auto industry and manufacturing are booming. Our high school graduation rate is at a record high. More young people are earning their college degrees than ever before. Millions more Americans now have quality, affordable healthcare (although the premium increases will surprise many). We’ve cut the deficit by more than half (from my own ridiculous trillion-dollar-plus deficits)…. “And just as we’re stronger at home, the United States is better positioned to lead in the 21st century than any nation on Earth. It’s not even close. We have the most powerful military in history — that’s certainly not close. (Although I am cutting it to mid-20th century levels). From Europe to Asia, our alliances are unrivaled. Our economy is the most dynamic. “We’ve got the best workers. We’ve got the best businesses. We have the best universities and the best scientists. With our domestic energy revolution, including more renewable energy, we’re more energy independent. Our technologies connect the world. (Because I have not secured the borders) our freedoms and opportunities attract (millions of illegal) immigrants….” Obama describes a happy, thriving America to veterans, who know better

No White House representative for two star General who died in Afghanistan either. “White House representatives sent to Michael Brown’s funeral Monday included Broderick Johnson, chairman of the My Brother’s Keeper Task Force; Marlon Marshall, deputy director of the White House Office of Public Engagement (and high school classmate of Brown’s mother); and Heather Foster, adviser to the Office of Public Engagement.” No White House Representatives At Memorial Mass For Slain Journalist James Foley

“Burton’s not the only big-name Hopenchange veteran lately to swallow hard and apologize to the Bushitler. David Axelrod did so a few days ago, saying, “We used to pillory George Bush for going to his ranch and we were wrong.” Guys like that aren’t given to defending Republicans, even opportunistically, unless they feel they’ve exhausted all other spin options. What they’re telling you here, in so many words, is that perceptions that Obama is disengaged are now enough of a political liability for Democrats to warrant a few well-placed “sorry, Dubya” comments. I wonder what data they’re seeing to make them nervous. In both the Gallup daily tracker and the RCP average, Obama’s job approval is actually slightly better now than it was at the start of August. He’s not hemorrhaging support by any means. What are they worried about? Possibly they think either Ferguson or the war against ISIS or something else is going to fall apart before the midterms and then the GOP will have a field day with ads juxtaposing O teeing off with headlines about impending disaster. Not sure how a “Bush was right” soundbite will ameliorate that, but okay.” Founder of Obama’s Super PAC: In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have mocked Bush for spending so much time at his ranch

Arizona Politics

“State treasurer and former ice cream chain CEO Doug Duceycampaigned from the middle and the far right, deftly gaining support from the business community and tea party supporters in his bid to win the Republican primary for Arizona governor. Now the victor will need to unite a party fractured by a bitter six-way primary and move back to the middle if he is to defeat a moderate Democrat in the November general election. Ducey rode to an easy victory with a campaign that focused on his blend of government and business experience in serving as a state official and building an ice cream company into a national brand. But he also campaigned with a message to the far right of the party, slamming President Barack Obama on border security. He promised to use satellites and the National Guard to secure the border and touted support from hard-line conservatives such as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.” Doug Ducey must unite GOP after bruising primary

Big Government

Just imagine the outcry from the left should this be happening under a Republican president. “It’s been a couple of days since the Washington Free Beacon’s Elizabeth Harrington first reported on the three-year-old  federal grant from the National Science Foundation for the “Truthy” database, and … not much else has happened. Blogs have picked it up, including our own Mary Katharine, and Reason’s Bobby Soave did a good job of highlighting its inherent contradictions. Twitchy has collated a number of tongue-in-cheek attempts to kick-start Truthy. Other than that, the national media appears to have gone radio silent on this latest project;according to a Bing news search this morning, no national outlet has yet picked up the story from WFB. That’s interesting, because one might have guessed that they would take notice of a million-dollar effort to encroach on their fact-checking turf. In my column for The Week today, I wonder why the federal government is spending a million dollars to create a mechanism that sounds like it could come straight out of Orwell when we have a perfectly good private-sector market for free speech:

The better question is this: Who makes these subjective judgments? At least at first, the answer would be the researchers who are building Truthy under a federal grant from the NSF. It’s not to hard to imagine a scenario in which the federal government would eventually find a use for Truthy, and would make the subjective judgments on how best to monitor political speech on social media.” Media curiously silent on “Truthy”

The Economy

Have you been to Washington D.C. lately? I felt like I had entered Disneyland. “The media just can’t seem to understand why Americans won’t join them in celebrating the Obama economy. There are two reasons for this disconnect. The first is that Washington DC is a booming Emerald City. Thanks to government largesse using money stolen from taxpayers, the skies are filled with construction cranes and the money flows like wine. [Snip] While the media celebrates a low unemployment number and job creation that barely keeps up with the increase in population, the labor participation rate remains at decade highs.” RESEARCHERS: UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HIGHER THAN REPORTED

Education

“The left has staged a coup. You can read more about it below.” It’s time to boycott AP history

“The College Board, the private company that produces the SAT test and the various Advanced Placement (AP) exams, has kicked off a national controversy by issuing a new and unprecedentedly detailed “Framework” for its AP U.S. History exam. This Framework will effectively force American high schools to teach U.S. history from a leftist perspective. The College Board disclaims political intent, insisting that the new Framework provides a “balanced” guide that merely helps to streamline the AP U.S. History course while enhancing teacher flexibility. Not only the Framework itself, but the history of its development suggests that a balanced presentation of the American story was not the College Board’s goal. The origins of the new AP U.S. History framework are closely tied to a movement of left-leaning historians that aims to “internationalize” the teaching of American history. The goal is to “end American history as we have known it” by substituting a more “transnational” narrative for the traditional account. This movement’s goals are clearly political, and include the promotion of an American foreign policy that eschews the unilateral use of force. The movement to “internationalize” the U.S. History curriculum also seeks to produce a generation of Americans more amendable to working through the United Nations and various left-leaning “non-governmental organizations” (NGOs) on issues like the environment and nuclear proliferation. A willingness to use foreign law to interpret the U.S. Constitution is likewise encouraged.” How the College Board Politicized U.S. History

“The College Board, the private company that produces the SAT test and the various Advanced Placement exams, is effectively requiring that AP U.S. History be taught from a hard-left perspective. It is doing so through a newly-issued “Framework” for its AP U.S. History exam. I warned of this development here. [Snip] The College Board’s “curricular coup” occurred soon after it selected David Coleman as its new president. Coleman is the architect of the Common Core. There should be no doubt that the Common Core is driven by a leftist agenda. Americans have started to figure out, albeit belatedly, the harms associated with that project, and they are beginning to fight back. But how do we fight back against the anti-American U.S. History curriculum being imposed by the College Board? States can reject the common core. But if high schools want to offer AP U.S. History (and it is to their advantage and the advantage of students that they do so), they must teach it as the College Board prescribes. Otherwise, students will be at a severe disadvantage when they take the end-of-the-year exam upon which college credit may depend. As Kurtz concludes:

The brief five-page conceptual guideline [that] the Framework replaced allowed sufficient flexibility for teachers to approach U.S. History from a wide variety of perspectives. Liberals, conservatives, and anyone in-between could teach U.S. history their way, and still see their students do well on the AP Test.

The College Board’s new and vastly more detailed guidelines can only be interpreted as an attempt to hijack the teaching of U.S. history on behalf of a leftist political and ideological perspective.

One way or another, this cannot be allowed to stand.” COLLEGE BOARD MANDATES LEFT-WING NARRATIVE FOR AP U.S. HISTORY

Here’s the impact that Left-wing education is having on young American minds. Emphasis mine. “There’s no doubt that anybody given the name Douglas McAuthur McCain by his parents would have a strong urge to consider enlisting in the military, if only to live up to all of the history implicit in your name (even if the spelling of your middle name isn’t quite spot-on, and your last name was purely a coincidence). It helps, though, to carefully choose the correct fighting force when volunteering, as NBC reports (yes, I know, but presumably, some of these details might be correct). As Bill Murray and the late Harold Ramis sang while marching inStripes, goofing on TV recruitment ads, “Pick a service, pick a challenge, set yourself apart: Army! Navy! Air Force! Marines!” Err, ISIS? [Snip] As Mark added, “it seems the true globalization success story of the 1990s was the export of ideology from a relatively obscure part of the planet to the heart of every Western city.” And with the left busy inculcating American students that the country is just another run-of-the-mill nation “somewhere on the UN Roll Call between Albania and Zimbabwe,” it certainly makes Islamofascism that much more appealing an alternative to sign up for. Even for a guy whose parents named him Douglas McAuthur McCain.” Meet Douglas McAuthur McCain, American Killed in Action in Syria

More on leftist propaganda permeating our schools, one policy or mandate at a time. “In a unanimous 71-0 vote last Thursday, with no debate or discussion, the California State Assembly passed a bill that would require the state’s board of education to teach students the racial “significance” of Barack Obama’s presidency as part of the standard history-social science curriculum in the Golden State. The bill, AB-1912 (reprinted below), also makes a number of factual findings, such as that Obama’s election in 2008 was “a historic step in the effort towards equality in the United States” and that he won the Nobel Peace Prize less than a year later because of “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” At the time, President Obama had been in office for less than nine months.” CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS TO TEACH KIDS RACIAL ‘SIGNIFICANCE’ OF OBAMA PRESIDENCY

Elections

“Remember when the Democrats salivated at the opportunity to take aim at Republican Governor John Kasich in Ohio? Good times, good times. The Democratic nominee, Cuyahoga County exec Ed Fitzgerald, has so completely melted down with just eleven weeks to go that the campaign has now shifted to an effort to keep his collapse from impacting down-ticket Democrats:

Ed FitzGerald’s campaign for governor confirmed Friday what was speculated for days: That the beleaguered Democrat is altering his strategy in an attempt to ensure his troubles don’t doom his party’s entire statewide ticket. …

FitzGerald’s campaign is reshuffling after weeks of character questions that dogged the gubernatorial nominee and raised doubts about his viability against Kasich. On Monday, an exodus of staff advisers and outside consultants signaled Democrats’ eagerness to salvage something out of the November elections.” Fitzgerald runs up the white flag in Ohio gubernatorial contest

Europe

“And yet, the Sainsbury’s incident is disturbing not so much for what it says about the nature of European anti-Israelism, but for what it says about the broader response within Europe to forces of intolerance and hatred. Employees of the Sainsbury’s branch in central London seemed to have understood, based on an accurate reading of recent events, that anti-Israel activists posed a threat to their store, and perhaps to their own physical well-being. And so the manager made a decision to surrender to the mob and engage in what could only be called an act of self-preservational, but objectively anti-Semitic, preemption. Cowering of this sort is a sign that a country is losing the ability to stand for the values it professes to maintain. In the U.K., it is also a sign that a society hasn’t fully grappled with the radical intolerance exhibited by some of its citizens.” Europe’s Slow Surrender to Intolerance: A seemingly small incident at a London supermarket suggests a deeper problem.

Hypocrisy

Truly delusional. “The leader of a prominent liberal super PAC on Wednesday defended taking money from billionaire George Soros while simultaneously condemning conservatives for benefiting from the fortunes of the Koch Brothers. During a Twitter exchange Wednesday, Brad Woodhouse of the Soros-backed American Bridge 21st Century argued that it is okay for his group to accept money from liberal billionaires because, unlike the Koch Brothers, these donors are ‘not looking to screw the middle class to enrich themselves.’” Liberal Super PAC Tries To Defend Taking Soros Money While Bashing Kochs

The IRS

The evidence must be pretty damning if they went to such extreme measures to destroy it. “Lois Lerner’s Blackberry was intentionally destroyed after Congress had begun its probe into IRS targeting of conservative groups, a senior IRS lawyer acknowledged in a sworn declaration. Thomas Kane, Deputy Assistant Chief Counsel for the IRS, wrote in the declaration, part of a lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch against the IRS, that the Blackberry was “removed or wiped clean of any sensitive or proprietary information and removed as scrap for disposal in June 2012.” That date – June 2012 – is significant because by that time, ex-IRS official Lerner had already been summoned before congressional staffers who interviewed her about reports of the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups.” Lois Lerner’s Blackberry deliberately destroyed after start of congressional probe: IRS lawyer

“By the way, Judge Sullivan of the DC District Court is the same Judge Sullivan who ruled that prosecutors in the Ted Stevens case were guilty of gross misconduct. Sullivan is an African-American, a graduate of Howard University and Howard Law School who was appointed to the bench by Ronald Reagan, promoted to the DC Court of Appeals by Bush I, and to the DC District Court by Bill Clinton. It’s an interesting bipartisan history.” Hide-and-seek: Lois Lerner’s emails

“If the latest revelations about the IRS are correct, then its officials have approached the abuse-of-power scandal with a clear strategy, pretty much from the beginning. They have been betting that, since their illegal targeting campaign against those who disagree with President Obama has had the backing of Democrats in Congress, they needed only a media strategy, not a political one. And that media strategy appears to have been: conceal or destroy potential (and actual) evidence, and assume that this activity will be less damaging than whatever is in the files they’ve worked to hide. It’s a direct challenge to the media, in other words.” Will IRS’s Strategy of Destroying Evidence Pay Off?

ISIS

“The U.S. government is tracking and gathering intelligence on as many as 300 Americans who are fighting side by side with the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria and are poised to become a major threat to the homeland, according to senior U.S. officials. Officials say concern is widespread in Washington that radicalized foreign fighters could return to the homeland and commit terrorist attacks with skills acquired overseas, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the information. Those concerns were heightened by the disclosure Tuesday that a California man was killed fighting alongside militants with the group, also known as ISIS.” Intel believes 300 Americans fighting with Islamic State, posing threat to U.S.: American militants could commit terrorist attacks with skills acquired in Iraq, Syria

Islam

“They do not claim to be at war with the United States. They are at war with the United States. Even Obama’s own deputy national security adviser, Ben Rhodes, admitted that the Foley execution “represents a terrorist attack against our country.” And for the Islamic State, that was only the beginning. It will not be satisfied with killing one U.S. citizen in the deserts of the Middle East. It wants to kill many thousands right here in the United States of America. [Snip] Up until now, Obama has been more concerned with stopping mission creep than stopping the Islamic State. That needs to change. Taking back the Mosul dam was great. But we’ll know Obama is serious when he helps local forces retake Mosul itself — and drives the Islamic State from its havens in Iraq and Syria that it should never have been allowed to take in the first place.” What Obama doesn’t get about the Islamic State

“The outrageous demands were made this month in a letter to Lisa O. Monaco, the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism. Among the signatories is the terrorist front organization Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which has repeatedly proven that it wields tremendous power in the Obama administration. Founded in 1994 by three Middle Eastern extremists, CAIR got the FBI to purge anti-terrorism material determined to be offensive to Muslims. Judicial Watch uncovered that scandal last summer and obtained hundreds of pages of FBI documents with details of the arrangement. JW also published a special in-depth report on the subject in December. CAIR also got several police departments in President Obama’s home state of Illinois to cancel essential counterterrorism courses over accusations that the instructor was anti-Muslim. The course was called “Islamic Awareness as a Counter-Terrorist Strategy” and departments in Lombard, Elmhurst and Highland Park caved into CAIR’s demands. The group responded with a statement commending officials for their “swift action in addressing the Muslim community’s concerns.” CAIR has wielded its power in a number of other cases during the Obama presidency, including blocking an FBI probe involving the radicalization of young Somali men in the U.S. and pressuring the government to file discrimination lawsuits against employers who don’t accommodate Muslims in the workplace.” Muslim Activists Demand Overhaul of All U.S. Law Enforcement Training

The Left

The Left doing the “Freak Out” dance once again! “Burger King plans to merge with Canuck coffee-and-doughnut chain Tim Hortons and base the company’s headquarters in Canada where it will enjoy the kind of reasonable corporate tax structure that Democrats continue to obstruct here in the United States. And the move has provoked a fresh round of moral panic, faux patriotism and confusion. The Left’s Ridiculous Burger King Freakout [Snip] With all that said, the Burger King move isn’t really about “inversion” anyway. This is a merger. Tim Hortons has a $9.9 billion market cap and generated more revenue than Burger King last year, so it seems implausible that the deal was made for reasons of tax sedition alone. When you merge with a company from another country, one that helps diversify your reach worldwide, it seems like a basic fiduciary responsibility to place your headquarters in the spot that offers you the best business climate. And though Burger King’s won’t save much in the immediate future, the long-term prospects of choosing Canada will. And that’s probably what’s driving a lot of this overwrought reaction to this merger. The consequences of high corporate taxation could not be more apparent. If established American brands like Burger King are willing to “leave” the country, it won’t matter how much hyperbole Democrats throw around, others will do the same. It’s certainly possible that the left will generate enough of a racket to convince the fast food giant to surrender on inversion. But, as we’ve seen, most companies can’t be shamed out of making the right decision.” A Pro-Hamas Left Emerges: In the pursuit of political goals and an anti-Israel message, Historians Against the War has abandoned the standards of its profession and adopted a stance that objectively supports Hamas’s war aims.

The Mainstream Press

“Fiscal profligacy has been a conservative concern of near paramount importance since the 110th Congress passed Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) bailout funding – a development that many believe gave rise to the conservative insurgent movement which later became known as the tea party. Since then, tea party conservatives have been expressing deep concerns about the government spending ranging from the Affordable Care Act, to the Recovery and Reinvestment Act, to Defense Department procurement waste, to ballooning entitlement spending and liabilities, to the nation’s nearly $18 trillion in debt. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. [Snip] Most of these concerns were scoffed at and dismissed by the media when they weren’t ignored outright. Publicizing any of this waste is of little value to the public, the press apparently surmised. But when Republicans get it in their heads to enforce the separation of powers and put a Democratic president in a political bind by compelling him to administer all the provisions of a deeply unpopular law he championed, then all of the sudden the media finds itself incensed by the application of American tax dollars to such a frivolous cause. [Snip] At least we know the press is capable of expressing concern over wasteful spending given the right conditions. Who knows? If there is a Republican president and a GOP congress in 2017, maybe the media will wake to the reality that not every cent spent by the federal government is crucial to Americans’ wellbeing. Just don’t hold your breath.” Press finally shocked at government spending… in the House GOP’s Obamacare lawsuit

Obamacare

“Three new Federal Reserve surveys reveal Obamacare continues to force employers to slash jobs and hours in response to the unpopular healthcare overhaul, reports The Wall Street Journal. Last Thursday, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia reported findings from its Obamacare business survey, revealing that 18.2% of employers are cutting jobs and employees as a result of Obamacare. Moreover, 18% said they have also had to shift more of their workers to part time. The New York Federal Reserve study found similar findings, with 21% of New York manufacturers and 16.9% of service businesses reporting reductions in the number of workers they employ due to Obamacare. Lastly, the Atlanta Federal Reserve’s study found that 34% of businesses that do not cover health insurance plan to hire fewer full-time workers due to Obamacare’s tax penalty for companies with more than 50 workers.” OBAMACARE CONTINUES TO DESTROY JOBS

The mainstream press once again doing it’s best to make us think Obamacare is swell, and won’t have any impact at all on the the November 2014 elections. “The voters didn’t get that memo. They revile the health care law more than ever. Even the left-leaning Huffington Post admits, “A majority of Americans disapprove of Obamacare, the highest share since President Barack Obama’s health care reforms became law more than four years ago.” And this isn’t due to ignorance about the law, as its supporters frequently claim. The voters have been inundated with information about “reform,” and they have correctly concluded that it will do more harm than good. A recent Rasmussen surveyreveals that likely voters in general expect Obamacare to have an adverse effect on American health care. More to the point, Obamacare is an important factor in the “enthusiasm gap.” According to a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, “The Republican Party holds a clear advantage in voter engagement in this fall’s midterm elections.” Why? The answer has long been obvious. Politico spelled it out months ago: ‘Obamacare will be a huge voting issue for Republicans.… They’ll turn out in droves because they hate the law.’” OBAMACARE ISN’T GOING AWAY AS CAMPAIGN ISSUE: Latest media meme is just as phony as its predecessors.

Desperation. “These threats to religious liberty are real and serious. But what makes them even more alarming is that they exist because, as Capretta writes, they “purposely wrote a coercive and overbearing HHS mandate rule to create a political issue. The president’s campaign team wanted objections to the rule because the objectors could then be demonized as waging a ‘war on women.’ That would presumably help drive Obama supporters to the polls in 2012.’” White House Tries To Reignite Birth Control Wars Because YOLO
