Just Because the Mainstream Press Isn’t Telling You About It, Doesn’t Mean You Shouldn’t Know About It: News You Should Know for September 26

Just say no to big government

Stories of the Day

Thanks Obama and all you BIG GOVERNMENT, “GOVERNMENT CAN SOLVE ALL OF OUR ILLS” DEMOCRATS… “Lagasse shared his thoughts on TNT’s On the Menu. He predicts that if the government doesn’t start getting out of the way, the American restaurant industry will split and leave entrepreneurs and start-ups behind. American restaurants will consist only of high-end establishments like the ones Lagasse owns, fast food and chain restaurants, because no one else will be able to succeed.” Famed Chef Emeril Lagasse Says Obama May Drive Him Broke

BIG GOVERNMENT ON STEROIDS.  “He mocked the federal government’s extreme low-ball on the cost of regulations at $127 billion. “Too often, regulatory impacts don’t get measured. But further, the disruption of market processes and the derailment of wealth, safety and health creating processes themselves are for the most part wholly neglected. We can say, circa 2015, according to back of the envelope surveys, roundups and placeholders, with gaps big enough to fit the beltway through, that up to $1.882 trillion annually — and in many categories perhaps considerably more — is a defensible assessment,” he wrote in his report.” Federal regs cost $1.88 trillion, more with Obama’s ‘pen and phone’ rules

But don’t worry. We’ve got all of those experts in Washington D.C. on the case. They’ll surely solve this problem! “A new report by Moody’s Investors Service finds that public pensions are $2 trillion short of the amount they owe current and future retirees. “Combined with large unfunded liabilities, aging plan demographics effectively transfer costs incurred by a previous generation onto the present one, increasing the burden on current government operations,” the report stated. More troubling is the fact that the pension shortfalls have expanded dramatically even as pension systems “were earning close to their currently expected returns,” stated the report.” PUBLIC PENSIONS $2 TRILLION SHORT OF WHAT THEY OWE RETIREES

And don’t forget that President Obama wants to do the same thing in Afghanistan too. Emphasis mine. “Dexter Filkins has long been a skeptic and critic of the Iraq war, from his tenure at the New York Times to his current assignment at the New Yorker. Still, that hasn’t kept Filkins from reporting honestly on developments in the theater; in 2008, while at the NYT, he wrote extensively about the success of the surge just a few months before the presidential election. A month later, Filkins wrote again about the “literally unrecognizable” and peaceful Iraq produced by the surge. Six years later, Filkins was among the skeptics reminding people that the Iraqis’ insistence on negotiating the immunity clause for American troops was more of a welcome excuse for Obama to choose total withdrawal — and claim credit for it until this year — rather than the deal-breaker Obama now declares that it was. Yesterday, Filkins told Hugh Hewitt that while one can argue whether the 2003 invasion was ill-advised, the total withdrawal in 2011 was the worst strategic mistake made by the US.” Audio: Iraq War critic says Iraq withdrawal may have been the worst strategic mistake of all

Sleep well America: Cutting costs in all the wrong places. “The U.S. Navy’s latest shipbuilding plan would see its attack submarine fleet diminish from 55 to 41 boats in the next decade and a half. That decision, confirmed in August, was eclipsed by the advance of ISIL, war in Gaza, and sedition in Ukraine. But the Navy’s announcement—the single-largest strategic consequence of this administration’s defense cuts—has the most far-reaching ramifications of the summer’s events.” A Naval Disaster in the Making: The misbegotten plan to shrink the U.S. submarine fleet.

More On the Big Story From Yesterday

“Mr. Strelka can’t hide forever. Judge Bates is fed up with Department’s delays and ordered the list of documents Mr. Holder and Mr. Obama have been hiding for years now on their Fast and Furious scheme. Soon, Judge Sullivan could appoint a special prosecutor or demand production of the back-up server’s emails, or give Judicial Watch additional discovery after October 17. One thing is for certain. Mr. Holder didn’t just wake up today and decide he wanted to go fishing. There are truths underlying this resignation that will be shocking when they surface. Mr. Holder will no longer have the shield of the Attorney General and the Department of Justice to protect him from congressional, grand jury, or other subpoenas. The next question is: Which criminal lawyer will he hire to defend him and how soon? The hiding places are filling up faster than you can say “you’re running out of time.” Eric Holder Runs from a Ticking Time Bomb: IRS Deadline Approaches Fast, Federal Judges are Furious—and Where’s Andrew Selka?

“Eric Holder’s legal mercies have typically been reserved for Clinton donors and unrepentant terrorists, but his decision yesterday to step down as attorney general of the United States after nearly six years is an act of mercy toward the American public. In an administration characterized by outsized misadventures — from the use of the nation’s tax bureau to suppress political opponents to the use of secret waiting lists at government hospitals that killed American servicemen — Eric Holder managed to make his Justice Department a source of special, nay, historic attention: In June 2012, Holder became the first U.S. attorney general to be held in contempt by the House of Representatives. He earned every vote. [Snip] As for Holder, his time in the spotlight may not be over. The congressional investigation into Operation Fast and Furious, and other dubious Department of Justice activities, continues, and Holder may — and likely should — find himself facing further congressional inquiry. Regardless, the end of Holder’s death grip on law enforcement at the federal level is long overdue. Perhaps now the Justice Department can get back to delivering actual justice.” Eric Holder’s Rap Sheet

Interesting theory you have there Mr. Simon. “Now I have a theory about the etiology of Holder’s fixation on race. When you know deep down you’re a dishonest person, when you have had to eat the bitter pill of your own corruption who knows how many times (even Clinton finally admitted that he had gone too far pardoning Rich and damaged his own reputation), you have to invent a narrative for yourself to justify your activities.  So over may years Holder developed what I have called elsewhere a “nostalgia for racism.”  No matter that racism was diminishing in our culture, he had to keep racism alive, believe it was alive.  If racism were going away, he would no longer have a raison d’être, an excuse for his biased behavior, an excuse, as it turned out, to go beyond the law, act unilaterally and punish political enemies. Toward this end, in a sense, Holder encouraged racism, as did Obama.  They are both slightly more polished versions of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.  Like Jackson and Sharpton, they act as if they care about the black man or woman in the street, but in actuality they just care about themselves.  The racial posturing is a form of moral narcissism that works to preserve racism, not to defeat it. It’s not by accident black America is suffering under Obama/Holder.  At least subconsciously, it’s by design.” Dosvedanya, Holder: America’s First Soviet Attorney General Steps Down

Amnesty/Illegal Immigration

“Immigration and Customs Enforcement released thousands of illegal-alien families from this summer’s border surge – the large majority of those who were apprehended – with instructions to report to the particular ICE office at their final destination. DHS has repeatedly refused to say how many of them actually show up as directed. Well, the AP secured a recording of “a confidential meeting at its [ICE’s] Washington headquarters with immigration advocates” where ICE acknowledged that 70 percent of those released “never showed up weeks later for follow-up appointments.” [Snip] No wonder morale among DHS employees is “abysmal.” And the circumstances of this revelation are also outrageous. We only know this information because of a leaked audio recording (kudos to the whistleblower, whoever it is) from a meeting with anti-enforcement activists undoubtedly whining about how cruel ICE is.” 70 Percent of Illegals Released by ICE Don’t Appear for Follow-up Appointments

Of course they didn’t. Who thought they would? This is precisely what amnesty shills have in mind when they demand “due process” for illegals. You’re detained, you’re given a date to meet with immigration agents or appear before an immigration judge to decide whether you’ll be deported, and then you’re sent on your merry way into the United States — never to be seen by the state again. The point of “due process” is to give illegals an easy way to avoid the process. DHS understands this. So rest easy. Our immigration system is working exactly the way it’s supposed to.” DHS secret revealed: Tens of thousands of illegals released during the border crisis didn’t show up for their immigration hearings

“On the one hand, the fact that almost none of the tens of thousands of illegal arrivals during the last few months showed up for their scheduled immigration hearings is not news at all. It was so predictable as to be virtually inevitable, a foregone conclusion. On the other hand it’s big news, or should be. It means that our immigration laws are not just broken, they are a joke. What’s more, everyone knows it, including and perhaps especially the illegal immigrants entering our country, who plan at the outset to take full advantage of the situation.” And this is news why?

“Citigroup has figured out where its bread is buttered, and has signed on to the agenda to engineer an electorate that will keep the Democrats in power permanently, as Ed Lasky explained earlier this week. The Illinois Review (and almost nobody else in the media) reveals:

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced that Chicago will join New York and Los Angeles in a corporate-funded push to try to get more immigrants to become voting U.S. citizens. [Snip]

Remember the days when fat cat bankers were presumed to be Republicans? It’s a whole new era, in which crony capitalism rules, and big government stands ready to bail out the giant banks.  Big government and big banks are brother and sister now, and only those crude tea partiers really bother to object. If you do business with Citi, keep in mind whom you are supporting (and giving your financial data to).” Citigroup funding left wing immigrant voter registration drive

Climate Change

“Mr. Williamson goes on to describe some horrific examples of environmental disasters wrought by the leaders of socialist governments during the twentieth century.  His article is worth a read. Since capitalism is an economic system separate from government, as opposed to socialism, there are    checks and balances in place.  Some of these come from government regulation (which ideally should be minimal), but are primarily derived from the forces of competition within the market. The primary problem with socialism is that once you have the regulators and the regulated working for the same people, mismanagement and corruption inevitably occur and become pervasive.   Environmental nightmares naturally ensue.” It’s All About System Change (to Socialism), Not Climate Change

“As horrific as de Blasio’s crime was, it pales in comparison to the carnage President Obama routinely inflicts upon the animal kingdom. His victims include: bald eagles, golden eagles, kit foxes, baby tortoises, and baby bats. Obama’s preferred methods of killing are significantly more brutal, including decapitation via wind turbine and incineration via solar panel heat laser. The mainstream media has done its best to ignore this trend, but it’s only a matter of time before the American people wake up and demand an end to the butchery.” Liberal Politicians Can’t Stop Killing Innocent Creatures: NYC mayor slaughters lovable groundhog in brutal death smash

Hillary Clinton

You really MUST click on over and read the entire thing. “The article had to do with Chozick’s bathroom habits. Every time she felt the urge, a representative of the Clintons would accompany her to the ladies’ room. Every time. And not only would the “friendly 20-something press aide” stroll with Chozick to the entrance of the john. She also “waited outside the stall.” As though Chozick were a little girl. If it was not embarrassing enough to be chaperoned to the water closet by a recent college graduate no doubt beaming with righteousness and an entirely undeserved and illusory sense of self-importance, some earnest and vacant and desperate-to-be-hip Millennial whose affiliation with the Clintons, whose involvement in their various schemes, consists of nothing more than her uniform of white shirt and silk scarf—if this was not on its own an indignity and an insult for a correspondent of the New York Times, when Chozick asked for comment on the bathroom police, she received the following response:

Craig Minassian, a spokesman for the initiative, directed me to a press release about American Standard’s Flush for Good campaign to improve sanitation for three million people in the developing world. ‘Since you are so interested in bathrooms and CGI,’ Mr. Minassian said. The Golden Bowl: Column: Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Global Initiative, and our supine media

The Left

The Left exposed as hypocrites once again.Andrew Sullivan, a conservative who largely became an Obama booster, is equally incredulous: “The way in which Obama supporters have lamely acquiesced to this reckless war fomented by a dangerous executive power-grab is more than a little depressing. It strikes me as uncomfortably close to pure partisanship. I can’t imagine them downplaying the folly of this if a Republican president were in charge.” Now of course a president’s strongest partisans will give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to controversial policies. And of course they will be quicker to jump on a president of the opposing party. But war, and peace, would seem to be one of those issues that would trump ideological allegiances.” Defanging the Left: Why liberals are staying silent on Obama’s war

“The progressive project that, in various forms, consumed most of the twentieth century, ran out of ideological justification with the fall of the Soviet Union and the transformation of China into… something more approaching Nazi Germany than the Communist Project. This has taken the certainty from under the followers of the left. The smarter ones, surely, know their ideology is rubbish and there isn’t a working example of a top-down socialist/communist society in the world that is self-sustaining, let alone competes with the US in innovation and creation at any level. Even the not so smart ones have to have an inkling. They can no longer point to the USSR and tell us if only we knew its wonders we’d convert. Their leaders are old, their ideas are depleted. They, in the parlance of my kids generation “got nothing.” So instead of real belief they have the desperate clutching at the appearance of belief and conformity, the appearance of being right. They’ve done so much for the cause, most of these celebrities and ideologues, that to backtrack now would be unthinkable. They’d have to face themselves in the morning and realize that they supported causes and movements that killed a hundred million people worldwide and held far more in abject squalor. They can’t do that. Courage was never their strong suit, otherwise they wouldn’t have gone along with the crowd after the fall of the USSR. So they just want us to “shut up already” and “die” so that in their totalitarian version of reality no little voice shall mar their self image.” The Future Must Belong to Those Who Question

War on Women

We hope that the smart women among us will wake up to the fact that this is a “manufactured war.” “The “war on women” is back, and more tendentious than ever. Democrats are replaying one of their greatest hits of 2012 in their furious battle to minimize their midterm losses in a political environment defined by an unpopular president and general unease. And why not? The war on women has a proven record of success — in mobilizing Democratic women and trumping what would otherwise seem much more important issues — and it is so simple that any idiot can run on it. The recipe is one part taking offense where clearly none was intended, and one part discerning new nefarious schemes to deny women access to birth control.” The Incredibly Insipid War on Women 2.0

Just Because the Mainstream Press Isn’t Telling You About It, Doesn’t Mean You Shouldn’t Know About It: News You Should Know for September 25

Today, we have something to be happy about. Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney General, has resigned. Whoo hoo!

Stories of the Day

The most lawless Attorney General our country has ever seen is resigning. Thank God. “What can be said about Eric Holder’s six years as attorney general that PJ Media hasn’t already said?  The news that Holder is going to resign should be bittersweet to anyone who cares about racial equality and the rule of law.  The damage he has already done to the country leaves a turbulent wake that is ill-matched to the financial reward awaiting him at a shameless and large Washington, D.C., law firm. Our country is more polarized and more racially divided because of Eric Holder.  He turned the power of the Justice Department into a racially motivated turnout machine for the Democratic Party.  That was his job in this administration, and he did it well. When I first reported on the racially motivated law enforcement of Holder’s Justice Department, it seemed fanciful to some. But after six years of Holder hugging Al Sharpton, stoking racial division in places like Florida and Ferguson, after suing police and fire departments to impose racial hiring requirements, after refusing to enforce election laws that protect white victims or require voter rolls to be cleaned, after launching harassing litigation against peaceful pro-life protesters, after incident after incident of dishonesty and contempt before Congress — after all this, it was clear to anyone with any intellectual honesty that this man had a vision of the law at odds with the nation’s traditions.” Goodbye, Eric, and Good Riddance: Cashing in on lawlessness.

“Bad cabinet members come and go, but Eric Holder leaves behind a legacy that I believe will haunt the nation for decades. What is that legacy? Again I turn to Adams:

Holder’s tenure represents the beginnings of a post-Constitutional era, where the chief law enforcement officer of the United States serves to dismantle legal traditions. Holder is the first attorney general to whom law seemed to be an option, a suggestion on the way to a progressive future. Most folks, and most lawyers, who didn’t devote daily attention to him might not have noticed the ground shifting during his tenure. But shift it did, and very deliberately.

Law, like liberty, is a tenuous thing. Failing to understand the sources of domestic tranquility, the sources of your relatively good life, usually also means failing to recognize the threats to that pleasant tranquility. Holder used his time at Justice to do things that corrode the rule of law. Law and liberty are precious things, and Holder did enormous damage to both.” HOLDER TO LEAVE, BUT HIS STAIN WILL LINGER

“If there is any justice, after the Obama era mercifully draws to a close, Holder will be prosecuted for a litany of abuses that have been ably documented by J. Christian Adams in Injustice: Exposing the Racial Agenda of the Obama Justice Department and by John Fund and Hans von Spakovsky in Obama’s Enforcer: Eric Holder’s Justice Department. But don’t hold your breath waiting for justice to be done. Like President Barack Hussein Obama, Holder knows he is immune from criticism because he is black. Holder possesses an ugly combination of creepy self-righteousness, cockiness, hatred of country, and racist contempt for white Americans that make him the darling of the activist Left and the mainstream media which refuses to report on his many, many misdeeds. Holder is an invaluable member of the Obama cabinet because he knows where the bodies are buried. Chances are he buried those bodies. He is not We the People’s lawyer but instead serves as a personal consigliere, or mob lawyer, to the highest elected gangster in the land, President Obama.” Eric Holder Out, Special Prosecutor to Follow?

“Thanks to his stonewalling of the House of Representatives investigation into the Fast and Furious scandal, in 2012  Eric Holder became the first Attorney General held in contempt by Congress. Maybe his resignation on Thursday will revive the story for the three broadcast network evening newscasts, but don’t count on it. With Sharyl Attkisson no longer working at CBS News, there is no broadcast journalist who has shown any interest in pursuing this disgraceful story.” Eric Holder’s Fast and Furious Fiasco Was Media Scandal, Too

“In light of a federal judge denying a request from the Department of Justice to delay the release of a long-sought after Fast and Furious document list, the sister of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, Kelly Terry-Willis, doesn’t find the timing of Attorney General Eric Holder’s resignation to be a coincidence.  I do not find it a coincidence that Eric Holder chose now to resign after Judge Bates denied the request from the DOJ to delay the release of the Fast and Furious documents. I personally think Eric Holder was really hoping that the documents would never be made public to my family and the American people,” Terry-Willis tells Townhall. “Will we ever get the accountability for my brother, Brian, Jaime Zapata and every other person who lost their lives to the guns from this horrific scandal? I don’t know, but I have a serious gut feeling when we finally see what is in those documents….the dynamics of this investigation are going to change and hopefully the people involved are brought to justice. Eric Holder can run, but there will be no hiding. The truth always reveals itself.”  EXCLUSIVE – Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry’s Sister on Timing of Holder Resignation: “Not a Coincidence”

“Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton said in a statement on Thursday that Attorney General Eric Holder is resigning as his group is close to nailing the Department of Justice on Operation Fast and Furious.” JUDICIAL WATCH: HOLDER WENT DOWN AS WE FORCED DOJ’S HAND ON FAST AND FURIOUS IN COURT

“The resignation — if that’s what it is — of Attorney General Eric Holder signals the end of one of the most divisive tenures in the history of the cabinet. It was no doubt inevitable after Mr. Holder was determined, in a bi-partisan vote, to be in criminal contempt of the 112th United States House. He became the only sitting cabinet officer in history to be so found. He reacted to the contempt finding with more contempt. From that point on his tenure in office was unsustainable.” The Eric Holder Tragedy

“Holder and his supporters, who know these decisions violate the Constitution but kept silent because of their partisan support for Obama, will rue their abuse of presidential power. Future presidents will be able to change tax rates or refuse to prosecute political supporters under these theories. Future conservative presidents may use the same claim to start dismantling the overgrown welfare state without the assent of Congress. We happily see Holder go, but he will have more regret not just looking back at the controversies that wracked the Department of Justice under his care, but when he ponders the future when conservative AGs turn his precedents against the bloated welfare state that he loves.” Why Eric Holder Will Regret His Recklessness

“Those are difficult subjects to bring up in a midterm cycle that already looks bad for Obama, so … why resign now, rather than after the election? The White House is apparently worried that a Republican takeover of the Senate will make confirmation of Holder’s replacement very difficult unless Obama appoints someone Republicans like. Resigning now allows Obama to appoint a replacement soon, and Senate Democrats to schedule the hearings during the lame-duck session (and don’t forget Harry Reid’s rule change on filibusters for presidential appointments, too, which expires at the end of this session). But naming a replacement for Holder carries significant political risks if it happens ahead of the midterms, too; if Obama picks someone too radical, Republicans will jump all over the choice in Senate races, and warn that the Democratic incumbents (or challengers, as the case may be) will be a rubber stamp for confirmation. It really puts the rubber-stamp issue front and center in the Senate races, which is exactly what Democrats who are trying to distance themselves from Obama didn’t need. This is a resignation that would have been better timed for Obama in June, especially with the focus falling on foreign policy, and finished up before most voters started paying attention to the midterms.” Breaking: Holder resigning as AG

Senator McCain pondering a run at six more years in Washington DC. “Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has begun to have serious conversations with state officials and local powerbrokers about running for a sixth term in the Senate. The longtime Republican senator is expected to face a tougher challenger and would be a major target for Tea Party groups, given his support for a Senate immigration bill granting a path to citizenship for workers living in the U.S. illegally. And McCain, who turned 78 last month, has, at times, suggested he’s willing to hang it up, telling the entertainment website The Wrap earlier this year that he didn’t “want to be one of these old guys that should’ve shoved off.” But more recently, McCain has given every indication that he wants to stay in the upper chamber, even after three decades as a senator. “I’m leaning toward it,” McCain told The Hill when asked about running for reelection.” McCain gets ready for race of his life

Common Core

Spread the word: a vote for Democrat David Garcia for Arizona Superintendent of Schools is a vote for Common Core. “This is the year new national Common Core tests kick in, replacing state tests in most locales, courtesy of an eager Obama administration and the future generation’s tax dollars. It’s also the first year a majority of people interviewed tell pollsters they’ve actually heard of Common Core, four years after bureaucrats signed our kids onto this complete overhaul of U.S. education. Common Core has impressed everyone from Bill Gates to U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. So why do 62 percent of parents think it’s a bad idea? For one, they can count. But their kids can’t.” Top Ten Things Parents Hate About Common Core: It’s the first school year most parents have heard about Common Core. And they don’t like it one bit.

Who would’ve seen this coming? Median family income continuing to fall under Obama’s leftist policies. “So President Goldman Sachs delivered big returns to the fatcats, at the expense of everyone else. Go figure.” MAYBE THIS IS WHY OBAMA’S POLLING BADLY EVEN IN BLUE STATES: William Galston: The Recovery That Left Out Almost Everybody.

The Green Movement and Communism

“Strange thing about Flood Wall Street, the financial-district protest that followed the People’s Climate March: Nobody had much to say about the climate — what they came to talk about wascapitalism. “Stop Capitalism,” “End Capitalism,” “Capitalism Kills,” the placards read. Kshama Sawant, the socialist Seattle city-council member who funds her crusade against capitalism by being married to a man with Microsoft money, called for a “radical, militant” movement linking environmental concerns to such traditional socialist enterprises as heavy government intervention into targeted industries, including energy and transportation. [Snip] Under a system that imposed heavy government regimentation upon the economy, direct government ownership of the “commanding heights” of the economy (and the commanded heights, too), a socialist vision of property, etc., the environmental results were nothing short of catastrophic. Setting aside the direct human costs of socialist environmental policy in the twentieth century — the famines, the deformations, the horrific birth defects — socialism was a disaster from the purely environmental point of view, too.” Capitalism Is Clean(er): Red isn’t green.

Click on over to see what an American Communist/Socialist American looks like. There are lots of pictures of them. “Communists along with a few environmental groups staged a “People’s Climate Rally” in Oakland, California on Sunday, September 21, in conjunction with the larger “People’s Climate March” in New York City on the same day. Wait — did I say communists? Isn’t that a bit of an exaggeration? Well…no. At the New York event, many people noticed that gee, there sure are a lot of communists at this march. But in Oakland — always on the cutting edge — the entire “climate change” movement at last fully, irrevocably and overtly embraced communism as its stated goal. Any concerns about “optics” or operating in “stealth mode” were abandoned. The “climate change” “crisis” is now nothing but the latest justification for “total revolution” and getting rid of capitalism forever.” Climate Movement Drops Mask, Admits Communist Agenda

“Our direct influence on global warming is highly limited, even if you assume the science is completely settled. As a country, we could end our emissions entirely, and it would barely cause a blip in the cumulative carbon buildup in the atmosphere.” The futility of the climate protest

The Left

Wait, I thought immigrants escaped their countries to escape totalitarianism. I don’t think they’re going to like what they see once the Left takes over everything. “President Obama and his fellow Democrats are scheming to use immigration and housing policy to fulfill their dream to fundamentally transform America forever. Over a decade ago, two liberals-John Judis and  Rus Teixeira-wrote a book, The Emerging Democratic Majority, that predicted demographic changes would inevitably lead to a Democratic lock on Congress and the White House. Their argument since has been updated by both of them and by others. Back in 2009, Teixeira wrote that “that demographic and geographic “trends should take America down a very different road than has been traveled in the last eight years. A new progressive America is on the rise.” The Plot to Create a Permanent Democratic Majority

I know, it’s Dick Morris. But we know what he writes is true. “Morris — author with Eileen McGann of the new book, “Power Grab: Obama’s Dangerous Plan for a One Party Nation,” published by Humanix Books — said the president’s plan is not about persuading Americans by traditional means, which “would be legit.” “It’s by bringing in millions of immigrants to screw up the voter rolls and by massive photo fraud with no photo ID so that he can use ACORN volunteers to produce artificial results,” Morris said.
“It’s getting everybody into a labor union whether they like it or not, to help control their votes. “And the most insidious part is Obamacare; to give everybody healthcare, food stamps, disability and Medicaid so that they all have skin in the game and something to lose if the Democrats lose. [Snip] “He wants to make it impossible for a private sector business to operate without the government’s explicit approval,” Morris said. “That means corruption, campaign contributions, not siding with the other side politically, that the EPA … has the life and death of your company in its hands.”
Morris said the recent IRS scandal — in which agency officials allegedly targeted conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status — was “designed to intimidate the activist and donor base so the Republican Party becomes a minor sideshow, not the main event.” “Dick Morris: Obama Wants to Make US a One-Party Nation

Because they know better… Emphasis mine. “This fall the University of California at Berkeley is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Free Speech Movement, a student-led protest against campus restrictions on political activities that made headlines and inspired imitators around the country. I played a small part in the Free Speech Movement, and some of those returning for the reunion were once my friends, but I won’t be joining them. Though the movement promised greater intellectual and political freedom on campus, the result has been the opposite. The great irony is that while Berkeley now honors the memory of the Free Speech Movement, it exercises more thought control over students than the hated institution that we rose up against half a century ago.The Unfree Speech Movement: I was among the student radicals at Berkeley in 1964, back when colleges actually had intellectual freedom.

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, chief architect of Obamacare, nudges us toward dying early as to not take up too many medical resources… “Normally, no one would care that in a recent Atlantic essay — “Why I Hope to Die at 75” — 57-year-old Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel argued that living to be 75 years old was long enough for anyone. After 75, Emanuel suggests, “We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic.” But Emanuel is no garden-variety crackpot. Nor is he a wannabe science-fiction writer dreaming of a centrally planned planet of robust youthful humanoids. Unfortunately, he was one of the chief architects of the troubled Affordable Care Act and a key medical advisor to the Obama administration. The ACA’s conservative critics have long knocked Obamacare as a first step toward medical rationing. Read Emanuel’s diatribe against living too long, and suddenly Sarah Palin’s attack on Obamacare’s “death panels” does not seem so far-fetched. Emanuel’s main point is that those who live beyond 75 inordinately gobble up collective health resources — like flu shots. Emanuel asserts that at age 75 and beyond, he will decline nearly all medical tests and treatments. (“What about simple stuff? Flu shots are out.”) He claims he won’t take antibiotics either.” Should We Hope to Die at 75? Contra Ezekiel Emanuel, age is no absolute barometer for human vitality and dignity.

Just Because the Mainstream Press Isn’t Telling You About It, Doesn’t Mean You Shouldn’t Know About It: News You Should Know for August 28

Stories of the Day

So many of today’s Democrats refuse to acknowledge how far left their party has moved. And until they do, we are doomed. “We noted here the other day (“Propping Up Obama”) the agony of the left over Obama’s miserable performance of late. But there are other signs that leftism is falling apart just about everywhere. Item: Leftist French President Francois Hollande has dissolved the government and is trying to reform a new government that is a few micrometers closer to the center in the interest of minimal reform to get the economy growing. From the AP:

France has had effectively no economic growth this year, unemployment is hovering around 10 percent and Hollande’s approval ratings are sunk in the teens.

This is what happens when you run out of other people’s money. Funny how that always seems to happen to socialists. It’s what we call bad luck.” IS THE LEFT APPROACHING A KOOL-AID MOMENT?

Shameful. “IRS data on internal migration showing how many people have moved to and from which states generally shows people leaving high-taxed states and states with high unemployment to states doing better in those categories. Now Obama’s IRS is seeking to delay release of these statistics for another 12 months. For decades economists and lawmakers both have used this IRS data as a marker for which states are succeeding in America, but the Obama administration has show its disdain for this important metric. Obama’s IRS had once announced that it was going to discontinue to collect and release this data but was shamed by Congress into continuing to gather the statistics. Now the administration is seeking to delay the release of this data to three years out, making some of the data too late to be of use. ” IRS DELAYING RELEASE OF DATA ON PEOPLE LEAVING HIGH-TAX STATES

All you rich liberals on the east coast voted for him. So deal with it. “President Obama’s plan to schmooze Wall Street honchos at a Westchester fund-raiser Friday is grounding wealthy weekenders who planned to fly to the Hamptons or Nantucket for the Labor Day holiday. The FAA has issued a no-fly warning that extends for most of Friday and all day Saturday through Sunday, grounding seaplanes to East Hampton, Montauk, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. On Friday, Obama will be feted at the home of one of his top bundlers, 32 Advisors’ Robert Wolf, in the aptly-named Purchase, NY, with 250 high-rollers paying up to $32,000 each to bend Obama’s ear.” Obama’s ‘schmoozing’ will cause travel havoc

Lovely. “A new report from the West Point counterterrorism center says the administration ignored warning signs as the Islamic State grew and trained over a four-year period paralleling our withdrawal from Iraq. As President Obama dithers about whether to strike the Islamic State’s sanctuary in Syria, a report by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point shows how we got to this point. Obama simply overlooked the “JV” team until it was ready for terrorism’s Pro Bowl.” West Point Report: Obama Watched Islamic State Grow

Please pray that our law enforcement officials can stay ahead of this. “U.S. intelligence has picked up increased chatter among Islamist terror networks approaching the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and amid the continuing battle for supremacy between Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, current and former U.S. officials told TheBlaze. “We’ve noticed a significant increase in chatter among Islamic terrorist organizations overseas both on the Internet and phone lines,” said a U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter. “This is certainly concerning, but as of yet we can’t pinpoint what or if they are planning a particular attack. We did see this kind of increase in chatter before the September 11 attacks. We just hope the public continues to remain vigilant.” Intelligence agencies have registered similar spikes in threats to the U.S. ahead of previous 9/11 anniversaries.” U.S. Officials Say ‘Significant Increase’ in Jihadi Chatter Ahead of 9/11 Anniversary

Never let a good manufactured crisis go to waste. “This entire “crisis” of unaccompanied alien children (UAC’s) is purely trumped up by the White House, and sold by a duplicitous media, to advance a demand for comprehensive immigration reform. Sneaky. “President Obama is planning to use some legislative trickery to write a new climate change accord and bypass the Senate’s historic responsibility to approve treaties. Hey! At least he’s consistent in his lawbreaking. The Hill:

Obama’s climate team is putting together a “politically binding” deal to “name and shame” nations to cut their emissions, according to The New York Times.

The administration’s hope is to get the deal signed by a United Nations summit next year in Paris.

Because the Senate would be unlikely to ratify a treaty on global warming, the administration is seeking to mix fresh voluntary pledges with legally binding 1992 treaty conditions.

Such a deal, according to officials quoted by the Times, would represent an updated version of an existing deal, and would not require ratification by the Senate. [Snip]

The ploy to piggyback Obama’s proposal on a 1992 law violates the whole idea of separation of powers by giving the president treaty ratifying authority that the Constitution clearly reserved for the Senate. It’s cynically transparent in its skirting the Constitution to make legal what ordinarily would be illegal. For the president, democracy is just too hard.” Obama plans to ink climate deal without Senate approval

Common Core

“Dear Big Foot Center-Right Conservative Editors: I have spent most of the summer traveling the center-right circuit and have figured out that the advance of “Common Core” across the land is an enormous issue for  parents, whatever their ideological leanings on other issues.  It is widely and correctly understood to be disruptive by all and ruinous by many, and it is not believed to be remotely in the tradition of “local control” of American education. As for its results, well, many fear it is the thalidomide of ed reform.  Early results are not promising, as confusion about what it is and how it is to be implemented reign everywhere.  Ask even a seasoned education professional and you will be greeted with a barrage of cliches (sic0 and catch-phrases, and no one can point to a concise summary of what “Common Core” means and how and when it is to be introduced.  It has now entered the teacher hiring process, and “familiarity with Common Core concepts and transition” is a hiring criteria which, given its opaque  nature, is a cloak for any decision, whether hiring, firing, promotion, tenure or transfer. In short, many across the political spectrum fear that Common Core is to education reform what Obamacare has become to health care reform, a vast, slow moving train wreck with enormous costs and many casualties, mostly unseen but with the body count rising. So cover it.  Extensively.  Assign a team.  Dedicate a section of your website to Common Core stories and stats.” Memo To Jonathan Garthwaite, Bill Kristol, Rich Lowry, and Mark Tapscott: “Common Core” May Be The Thalidomide of Ed Reform. Cover It.

The Economy

Note to President Obama and the rest of you Democrats: When you saddle the country’s businesses with pages and pages and pages of new regulations, the economy is going to have a hard time getting out from under the weight of it all. “The U.S. economy has grown just 1.5 percent in the 2014 fiscal year — far slower than White House projections — while more than $500 billion of deficit spending was added to the national debt, according to projections released Wednesday by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.” US Economy Growing Slower than White House Predicted

“The Congressional Budget Office released a bit of a good news/bad news report on Wednesday regarding the state of the U.S. economy and federal budget. In the bad news column, CBO projected 2014’s GDP growth at just 1.5 percent. The report blamed this revision on “the surprising economic weakness in the first half of the year.” In early June, the International Monetary Fund projected the United States to grow by just 2 percent this year, revising its own estimate down from a previously anticipated 2.7 percent GDP expansion. This report is not likely to be warmly greeted by the White House.” CBO revises estimate, warns U.S. economic growth will underwhelm in 2014

Where would the Democrats be without all of their loyal “group thinkers?” “Nothing about that is out of the ordinary. The Democrats have today taken on the ideology of power. Barack Obama ran two vapid campaigns driven by a personality cult and enforced groupthink. He has chosen, and his people have accepted (thus far at least), Hillary Clinton as his successor, who virtually guarantees the same type of campaign all over again. Ideas are dangerous things, and liberals tend to keep their distance from them. Hence their decision to have Crist represent them in a key state.” In Picking Crist, Dems Look Beyond Florida

Vote him out! “As Republicans aim to take control of the Senate, with a bevy of red-state Democrats looking to be in trouble, Minnesota’s Senate race isn’t at the top of the GOP’s takeover list. But it heads the list of “sleeper” races—one of a handful of contests that have the potential to break late if the political environment is as toxic for Democrats as some national polls suggest. Unlike other Democratic senators responding to newfound challenges by engaging their opposition early, Franken is running an unusually low-key race, giving off the vibe that there’s nothing to see here. After I tweeted my Minnesota travel plans, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s communications director, Matt Canter, mocked the suggestion that this was a potentially competitive race.” Finding Al Franken: The comedian-turned-senator is running an unusually low-key reelection campaign, trying to avoid scrutiny. Will Republicans get the last laugh?

Global Warming

Oops. “President Obama once frequently touted Spain’s green energy economy. No longer. That’s no surprise given how things have worked out for the economically beleaguered country. According to a new report by the free-market Institute for Energy Research, Spain’s green energy policies have resulted in skyrocketing electricity prices, billions of euros in debt and rising carbon dioxide emissions. “For years, President Obama has pointed to Europe’s energy policies as an example that the United States should follow,” said IER in a statement on their new study. “However, those policies have been disastrous for countries like Spain, where electricity prices have skyrocketed, unemployment is over 25 percent, and youth unemployment is over 50 percent.” [Snip] The IER study also notes that Spain’s green agenda was not able to keep its carbon footprint from rising. Between 1994 and 2011, Spain’s carbon dioxide emissions grew 34.5 percent, despite the country’s green push which began in the 1990s.” Spain’s Green Economy: Skyrocketing Power Prices And Higher CO2 Emissions

The Democrats are going to ensure this extra control over ‘we the people’ one way or another. The Constitution be damned.  “Can’t get two-thirds of the Senate to approve a bit of Green Legislation you favor?  No problem!  Just pretend that the United States of America is subject not to its Constitution but to the transnational organization of gangsters, kleptocracies, and Third-World dictatorships known as the Untied Nations. Sound extreme? We can talk about the composition of the Untied Nations another time.  But when it comes to Barack Obama’s cavalier treatment of the Constitution, you need look no further than this morning’s New York Times. Under the headline “Obama Pursuing Climate Accord in Lieu of Treaty,” the paper explains how the president, frustrated by Congress’s unwillingness to barter away U.S. sovereignty by signing on to the so-called “Kyoto Protocol,” the economy blighting climate standards devised by Greenies and other folks eager to hamstring the world’s most productive economies, especially the Untied States, is planning to “sidestep” Congress.” Obama Tries for Kyoto 2.0

President Obama

“But what did they expect? Even before Obama’s first term, it was known that he had a famously cool style, few friends, and a history of being emotionally removed. His allies may not have done their homework on the character of the man they were electing, but his personality was no secret whatsoever. [Snip] I will never understand those who perceived Obama as “likeable,” as anything other than a cold guy. And I don’t think his high likeability scores were merely a function of people giving him the benefit of the doubt because of his race; I know plenty of people who really, really liked him. I am better able to understand those who didn’t know he was a leftist (despite all the “tells”), or who thought him so very brilliant (despite his failure to demonstrate anything special in that regard), than those who thought him warm or friendly or engaged with people in the way we’ve grown used to in presidents such as LBJ and Clinton and George W. Bush. Obama’s demeanor has always seemed chilly, offputting, and angry to me, with a thin veneer of affability covering it up. There was also no evidence whatsoever, pre-election, that Obama would be able to work effectively with people, and certainly none about his warmth or liking of people. The thing was, his supporters either imagined it was there when it was not, or somehow thought its lack wouldn’t matter. His brilliance would override everything. Well, we’ve seen how that’s worked out.” Obama the Aloof

“And why does the God fail? Because he’s not a god, of course. I found this interesting:

His supporters argue that his approach has been consistent with his strategy of returning the United States — after post-Sept. 11 wars — to a foreign policy built around economic engagement rather than military intervention. The question, though, is whether he is contradicting the pledge embraced in his 2009 Nobel Prize lecture: “to face the world as it is,” not as he would like it to be.”He thought he could change the tenor more easily than he could, and I think he thought the world would be more responsive to his desires than the world has proven to be,” said Jon B. Alterman, senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

This explains Obama’s failures as well as anything else: He speaks his platitudes with the zest of a man who thinks his audience is hearing all this for the first time, and he thinks his Magic Words can move mountains. And he has no Plan B for when this fails.” As Obama Offers “Don’t Do Stupid Shit” Theory of Foreign Policy, His Dwindling Band of Disciple-Defenders Offer “Shit Happens” Theory of Geopolitics

Veterans Administration

Our veterans are not at all in the best of hands. “A new report from the Philadelphia Inquirer shows that the VA has busied itself with an effort to cheer up veterans by asking its staff to think of them as … Oscar the Grouch?

The beleaguered Department of Veterans Affairs depicted dissatisfied veterans as Oscar the Grouch in a recent internal training guide, and some vets and VA staffers said Tuesday that they feel trashed.

The cranky Sesame Street character who lives in a garbage can was used in reference to veterans who will attend town-hall events Wednesday in Philadelphia. …

The slide show, “What to Say to Oscar the Grouch – Dealing with Veterans During Town Hall Claims Clinics,” was shown to employees who will staff those events. [Snip]

Referring to veterans unhappy with access to their care as Oscar the Grouch might in fact be part of the entire problem at the VA. Customer-service training is always a challenge because it has to engage staffers and capture their imagination a bit, but … Oscar the Grouch? One has to assume that most of these staffers had put a few years between themselves and their Sesame Street age. Forget for a moment the condescending tone that sets in regard to the patients — it’s almost as insulting to the staff. [Snip] I reached out to Pete Hegseth of Concerned Veterans for America, who said that this exposes “the dirty little secret about how many VA officials feel about veterans.” They see veterans as the problem, not the clients. “If veterans were seen as customers, they wouldn’t be seen as Oscar the Grouch,” Pete said. “This feeds the fears about how veterans believe they are perceived at the VA.” He assured me that CV4A will not let this slide, either.” VA customer relations training equates vets angry over care with … Oscar the Grouch

“Democrats had better pray that the 1918 comparison doesn’t hold up, because their defeat of 1918 was followed by the Democratic disaster of 1920, when Warren Harding swept the country on the platform of “return to normalcy” in the greatest victory percentage margin (60 to 34%) of the 20th Century and also cracked the Democratic “Solid South” for the first time since the Civil War era. Republicans will surely be hoping that history repeats itself.” 5 Reasons Why the 2014 Midterms Are Most Like … 1918

Inevitable. Leftist Democrat mayor takes over New York City and all hell breaks loose. “ The number of vagrants on the streets, and their aggression, is on the rise. The number of people sleeping in the City Hall and 33rd Street subway stations, the endpoints of my daily commute, is visibly higher, as is the level of vagrancy in Penn Station and Grand Central. The squeegee men are back, and their like-minded colleagues are setting up shop in churches. Violent crime around the city is up significantly. Central Park muggings and casual, racially motivated assaults are back in the news. In a city in which it is well-nigh impossible for me to carry a gun legally (I have held concealed-carry permits in other jurisdictions), shootings are up 12 percent. We are seeing increasingly Chicago-style headlines: Over one mid-August weekend, 21 people were shot. In 2012, there were no rapes in Central Park. By September of 2013, a month after the Community Safety Act was passed, there had been a half dozen, and felonies in the park were up 10 percent. Misdemeanor sex crimes in the park rose by 100 percent. Concession-stand workers were robbed at knifepoint, and this past weekend a woman was shot in the head with an airgun by a gang of black teens shouting, ‘White people suck!’” Decline and Fall: In New York, a pessimistic empire state of mind

Democrat party funded largely by taxpayer dollars which are funneled through public employee unions. Emphasis mine. “Noam Scheiber makes a good case for the importance of the Wisconsin governor’s race at the New Republic. But the most interesting thing comes in what Scheiber, perhaps inadvertently, admits. Referring to the limitations on public employee union bargaining imposed by Governor Scott Walker and the Republican legislature, Scheiber writes, “He’s effectively defunded a key Democratic constituency.” Let’s unpack that. Where do public employee unions get their money? Directly from dues paid by public employees, who in turn get that money from taxpayers. Where does that money go? Politically, almost entirely to the Democratic Party, as Scheiber admits. Public employee unions, whatever else they do, are (in almost all cases) a mechanism for mandatory taxpayer financing of one political party. Scheiber’s complaint is that Wisconsin Republicans have cut the amount of such public financing.” Letting the cat out of the bag on the role of public employee unions

How Obama’s approval rating floor is holding around 40 percent is beyond my comprehension. “Back in the 1980s, the Democratic Party media dubbed Ronald Reagan the “Teflon President.” By this, they meant that their false, dishonest and trivial attacks on Reagan didn’t sway the public, which appreciated the most meteoric economic recovery in modern history and restoration of America’s status as not just a great power, but a competent one. Something quite different is happening with Barack Obama. By any possible measure, he has been an awful president. His administration has been good for hedge fund managers and “green” energy scammers, but disastrous for working class Americans, especially African-Americans. Median income and household wealth are down, and let’s not even talk about foreign policy or the national debt. Yet, Obama’s approval ratings have a relatively high floor of around 40%.” BARACK OBAMA, THE TEFLON PRESIDENT

“All of a sudden, people have noticed that we are in trouble, and many are saying it isn’t the president’s fault. All the bad news, from Iraq to Ukraine, from Libya and Syria to the Mexican border, just seems to have happened: Obama was standing there, golfing or shaking hands with donors, and, like a burst of bad weather, the winds blew, the skies opened, and things went to hell. Mysterious forces conspired against him, terrible setbacks occurred for no reason, and we were left with effects without a cause. His supporters commiserate with him and note his bad fortune at being in office at a time when events make his life difficult. Or they worry about the effect of all these misfortunes on his legacy. “Can Obama Weather the Current Geopolitical S—storm?” Mother Jones’s David Corn wondered recently. Judging from recent poll numbers—36 percent approve of his conduct of foreign relations—the answer appears to be ‘no.’” Nobody’s Fault:  Liberals Make Excuses for Obama

The left is getting rid of religion one little bit at a time: “The Christian cleansing of Orange County Public Schools did not make national headlines. Their decision to banish the chaplains garnered no attention. And that’s why Pastor Schmidt decided to speak up.” “’We can’t stay silent any longer,’ he told me. “We can’t allow them to move into these areas that traditionally have always been a part of the football program.” But that’s exactly what FFRF is attempting to do – eradicate Christianity in the public marketplace of ideas. “Faith, family, football – have always gone together,” he said. “Here’s an organization like this coming in and trying to tear that out.” Pastor Schmidt said it’s time to do something. “We’re not going to give up,” he said. “We’re not going to give up on the team.” I’m glad Pastor Schmidt hasn’t given up because the school district, in an incredible act of cowardice, did give up. All it took was a threatening letter from the Freedom From Religious Foundation and the school leaders capitulated.”  Florida school district replaces football chaplains with “life coaches”

“While chatting with Brian Lamb, Rangel dropped a few falsehoods as casually as cigar ash. This isn’t to pick on Rangel; he’s just illustrative. His assertion — that the Republican and Democratic parties “changed sides” in the 1960s on civil rights, with white racists leaving the Democratic party to join the Republicans — has become conventional wisdom. It’s utterly false and should be rebutted at every opportunity.” The Myth of Republican Racism: As the South abandoned its prejudices, it shifted to the GOP.

“The public perception that race relations have not improved during the course of Barack Obama’s presidency appears to be on the rise. Some data indicate, in fact, that the Obama-era has seen racial tensions worsen.” Poll: Race relations were better under Bush

Emphasis mine. “On Tuesday, the president spoke to the American Legion’s national convention, facing a crowd of veterans deeply concerned about widespread corruption at the Veterans Administration and the resultant deaths of some veterans awaiting health care. So when Obama began by lecturing the veterans about cynicism and explaining his most recent foreign policy choices — instead of addressing the VA crisis — the audience clearly wasn’t pleased. Fox News cameras captured a sea of blank or frowning faces looking silently back at the president as he paused for failed applause line after failed applause line.” Obama’s Speech To The American Legion Was Painfully Awkward [VIDEO]

“President Obama is enduring an awful summer of domestic troubles, foreign tragedies and a lost national narrative that’s put him on the defensive. He’ll try to recapture control of the country’s political dialogue next month by igniting an emotional controversy over legalizing illegal aliens. But Tuesday the Democrat was in Charlotte to describe to American Legion members an exotic foreign land where November voters should be delighted to keep his party members in office. Obama’s full text is available here. We’ve gathered some excerpts with our comments in italics to provide a flavor of the alien land this president sees through his bullet-proof windows. He doesn’t seem so much detached as delusional: “Even as we face, yes, the hard tasks of our time, we should never lose sight of our progress as a people or the strength of our leadership in the world. (Just take my word for it.) ….We are stronger at home. (What?) Over the past 53 months, our businesses have added nearly 10 million new jobs…. “Construction and housing are rebounding. Our auto industry and manufacturing are booming. Our high school graduation rate is at a record high. More young people are earning their college degrees than ever before. Millions more Americans now have quality, affordable healthcare (although the premium increases will surprise many). We’ve cut the deficit by more than half (from my own ridiculous trillion-dollar-plus deficits)…. “And just as we’re stronger at home, the United States is better positioned to lead in the 21st century than any nation on Earth. It’s not even close. We have the most powerful military in history — that’s certainly not close. (Although I am cutting it to mid-20th century levels). From Europe to Asia, our alliances are unrivaled. Our economy is the most dynamic. “We’ve got the best workers. We’ve got the best businesses. We have the best universities and the best scientists. With our domestic energy revolution, including more renewable energy, we’re more energy independent. Our technologies connect the world. (Because I have not secured the borders) our freedoms and opportunities attract (millions of illegal) immigrants….” Obama describes a happy, thriving America to veterans, who know better

“Burton’s not the only big-name Hopenchange veteran lately to swallow hard and apologize to the Bushitler. David Axelrod did so a few days ago, saying, “We used to pillory George Bush for going to his ranch and we were wrong.” Guys like that aren’t given to defending Republicans, even opportunistically, unless they feel they’ve exhausted all other spin options. What they’re telling you here, in so many words, is that perceptions that Obama is disengaged are now enough of a political liability for Democrats to warrant a few well-placed “sorry, Dubya” comments. I wonder what data they’re seeing to make them nervous. In both the Gallup daily tracker and the RCP average, Obama’s job approval is actually slightly better now than it was at the start of August. He’s not hemorrhaging support by any means. What are they worried about? Possibly they think either Ferguson or the war against ISIS or something else is going to fall apart before the midterms and then the GOP will have a field day with ads juxtaposing O teeing off with headlines about impending disaster. Not sure how a “Bush was right” soundbite will ameliorate that, but okay.” Founder of Obama’s Super PAC: In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have mocked Bush for spending so much time at his ranch

Arizona Politics

“State treasurer and former ice cream chain CEO Doug Duceycampaigned from the middle and the far right, deftly gaining support from the business community and tea party supporters in his bid to win the Republican primary for Arizona governor. Now the victor will need to unite a party fractured by a bitter six-way primary and move back to the middle if he is to defeat a moderate Democrat in the November general election. Ducey rode to an easy victory with a campaign that focused on his blend of government and business experience in serving as a state official and building an ice cream company into a national brand. But he also campaigned with a message to the far right of the party, slamming President Barack Obama on border security. He promised to use satellites and the National Guard to secure the border and touted support from hard-line conservatives such as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.” Doug Ducey must unite GOP after bruising primary

Big Government

Just imagine the outcry from the left should this be happening under a Republican president. “It’s been a couple of days since the Washington Free Beacon’s Elizabeth Harrington first reported on the three-year-old  federal grant from the National Science Foundation for the “Truthy” database, and … not much else has happened. Blogs have picked it up, including our own Mary Katharine, and Reason’s Bobby Soave did a good job of highlighting its inherent contradictions. Twitchy has collated a number of tongue-in-cheek attempts to kick-start Truthy. Other than that, the national media appears to have gone radio silent on this latest project;according to a Bing news search this morning, no national outlet has yet picked up the story from WFB. That’s interesting, because one might have guessed that they would take notice of a million-dollar effort to encroach on their fact-checking turf. In my column for The Week today, I wonder why the federal government is spending a million dollars to create a mechanism that sounds like it could come straight out of Orwell when we have a perfectly good private-sector market for free speech:

The better question is this: Who makes these subjective judgments? At least at first, the answer would be the researchers who are building Truthy under a federal grant from the NSF. It’s not to hard to imagine a scenario in which the federal government would eventually find a use for Truthy, and would make the subjective judgments on how best to monitor political speech on social media.” Media curiously silent on “Truthy”

The Economy

Have you been to Washington D.C. lately? I felt like I had entered Disneyland. “The media just can’t seem to understand why Americans won’t join them in celebrating the Obama economy. There are two reasons for this disconnect. The first is that Washington DC is a booming Emerald City. Thanks to government largesse using money stolen from taxpayers, the skies are filled with construction cranes and the money flows like wine. [Snip] While the media celebrates a low unemployment number and job creation that barely keeps up with the increase in population, the labor participation rate remains at decade highs.” RESEARCHERS: UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HIGHER THAN REPORTED

“The left has staged a coup. You can read more about it below.” It’s time to boycott AP history

“The College Board, the private company that produces the SAT test and the various Advanced Placement (AP) exams, has kicked off a national controversy by issuing a new and unprecedentedly detailed “Framework” for its AP U.S. History exam. This Framework will effectively force American high schools to teach U.S. history from a leftist perspective. The College Board disclaims political intent, insisting that the new Framework provides a “balanced” guide that merely helps to streamline the AP U.S. History course while enhancing teacher flexibility. Not only the Framework itself, but the history of its development suggests that a balanced presentation of the American story was not the College Board’s goal. The origins of the new AP U.S. History framework are closely tied to a movement of left-leaning historians that aims to “internationalize” the teaching of American history. The goal is to “end American history as we have known it” by substituting a more “transnational” narrative for the traditional account. This movement’s goals are clearly political, and include the promotion of an American foreign policy that eschews the unilateral use of force. The movement to “internationalize” the U.S. History curriculum also seeks to produce a generation of Americans more amendable to working through the United Nations and various left-leaning “non-governmental organizations” (NGOs) on issues like the environment and nuclear proliferation. A willingness to use foreign law to interpret the U.S. Constitution is likewise encouraged.” How the College Board Politicized U.S. History

“The College Board, the private company that produces the SAT test and the various Advanced Placement exams, is effectively requiring that AP U.S. History be taught from a hard-left perspective. It is doing so through a newly-issued “Framework” for its AP U.S. History exam. I warned of this development here. [Snip] The College Board’s “curricular coup” occurred soon after it selected David Coleman as its new president. Coleman is the architect of the Common Core. There should be no doubt that the Common Core is driven by a leftist agenda. Americans have started to figure out, albeit belatedly, the harms associated with that project, and they are beginning to fight back. But how do we fight back against the anti-American U.S. History curriculum being imposed by the College Board? States can reject the common core. But if high schools want to offer AP U.S. History (and it is to their advantage and the advantage of students that they do so), they must teach it as the College Board prescribes. Otherwise, students will be at a severe disadvantage when they take the end-of-the-year exam upon which college credit may depend. As Kurtz concludes:

The brief five-page conceptual guideline [that] the Framework replaced allowed sufficient flexibility for teachers to approach U.S. History from a wide variety of perspectives. Liberals, conservatives, and anyone in-between could teach U.S. history their way, and still see their students do well on the AP Test.

The College Board’s new and vastly more detailed guidelines can only be interpreted as an attempt to hijack the teaching of U.S. history on behalf of a leftist political and ideological perspective.

One way or another, this cannot be allowed to stand.” COLLEGE BOARD MANDATES LEFT-WING NARRATIVE FOR AP U.S. HISTORY

Here’s the impact that Left-wing education is having on young American minds. Emphasis mine. “There’s no doubt that anybody given the name Douglas McAuthur McCain by his parents would have a strong urge to consider enlisting in the military, if only to live up to all of the history implicit in your name (even if the spelling of your middle name isn’t quite spot-on, and your last name was purely a coincidence). It helps, though, to carefully choose the correct fighting force when volunteering, as NBC reports (yes, I know, but presumably, some of these details might be correct). As Bill Murray and the late Harold Ramis sang while marching inStripes, goofing on TV recruitment ads, “Pick a service, pick a challenge, set yourself apart: Army! Navy! Air Force! Marines!” Err, ISIS? [Snip] As Mark added, “it seems the true globalization success story of the 1990s was the export of ideology from a relatively obscure part of the planet to the heart of every Western city.” And with the left busy inculcating American students that the country is just another run-of-the-mill nation “somewhere on the UN Roll Call between Albania and Zimbabwe,” it certainly makes Islamofascism that much more appealing an alternative to sign up for. Even for a guy whose parents named him Douglas McAuthur McCain.” Meet Douglas McAuthur McCain, American Killed in Action in Syria

More on leftist propaganda permeating our schools, one policy or mandate at a time. “In a unanimous 71-0 vote last Thursday, with no debate or discussion, the California State Assembly passed a bill that would require the state’s board of education to teach students the racial “significance” of Barack Obama’s presidency as part of the standard history-social science curriculum in the Golden State. The bill, AB-1912 (reprinted below), also makes a number of factual findings, such as that Obama’s election in 2008 was “a historic step in the effort towards equality in the United States” and that he won the Nobel Peace Prize less than a year later because of “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” At the time, President Obama had been in office for less than nine months.” CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS TO TEACH KIDS RACIAL ‘SIGNIFICANCE’ OF OBAMA PRESIDENCY

“Remember when the Democrats salivated at the opportunity to take aim at Republican Governor John Kasich in Ohio? Good times, good times. The Democratic nominee, Cuyahoga County exec Ed Fitzgerald, has so completely melted down with just eleven weeks to go that the campaign has now shifted to an effort to keep his collapse from impacting down-ticket Democrats:

Ed FitzGerald’s campaign for governor confirmed Friday what was speculated for days: That the beleaguered Democrat is altering his strategy in an attempt to ensure his troubles don’t doom his party’s entire statewide ticket. …

FitzGerald’s campaign is reshuffling after weeks of character questions that dogged the gubernatorial nominee and raised doubts about his viability against Kasich. On Monday, an exodus of staff advisers and outside consultants signaled Democrats’ eagerness to salvage something out of the November elections.” Fitzgerald runs up the white flag in Ohio gubernatorial contest

“And yet, the Sainsbury’s incident is disturbing not so much for what it says about the nature of European anti-Israelism, but for what it says about the broader response within Europe to forces of intolerance and hatred. Employees of the Sainsbury’s branch in central London seemed to have understood, based on an accurate reading of recent events, that anti-Israel activists posed a threat to their store, and perhaps to their own physical well-being. And so the manager made a decision to surrender to the mob and engage in what could only be called an act of self-preservational, but objectively anti-Semitic, preemption. Cowering of this sort is a sign that a country is losing the ability to stand for the values it professes to maintain. In the U.K., it is also a sign that a society hasn’t fully grappled with the radical intolerance exhibited by some of its citizens.” Europe’s Slow Surrender to Intolerance: A seemingly small incident at a London supermarket suggests a deeper problem.

Truly delusional. “The leader of a prominent liberal super PAC on Wednesday defended taking money from billionaire George Soros while simultaneously condemning conservatives for benefiting from the fortunes of the Koch Brothers. During a Twitter exchange Wednesday, Brad Woodhouse of the Soros-backed American Bridge 21st Century argued that it is okay for his group to accept money from liberal billionaires because, unlike the Koch Brothers, these donors are ‘not looking to screw the middle class to enrich themselves.’” Liberal Super PAC Tries To Defend Taking Soros Money While Bashing Kochs

The evidence must be pretty damning if they went to such extreme measures to destroy it. “Lois Lerner’s Blackberry was intentionally destroyed after Congress had begun its probe into IRS targeting of conservative groups, a senior IRS lawyer acknowledged in a sworn declaration. Thomas Kane, Deputy Assistant Chief Counsel for the IRS, wrote in the declaration, part of a lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch against the IRS, that the Blackberry was “removed or wiped clean of any sensitive or proprietary information and removed as scrap for disposal in June 2012.” That date – June 2012 – is significant because by that time, ex-IRS official Lerner had already been summoned before congressional staffers who interviewed her about reports of the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups.” Lois Lerner’s Blackberry deliberately destroyed after start of congressional probe: IRS lawyer

“By the way, Judge Sullivan of the DC District Court is the same Judge Sullivan who ruled that prosecutors in the Ted Stevens case were guilty of gross misconduct. Sullivan is an African-American, a graduate of Howard University and Howard Law School who was appointed to the bench by Ronald Reagan, promoted to the DC Court of Appeals by Bush I, and to the DC District Court by Bill Clinton. It’s an interesting bipartisan history.” Hide-and-seek: Lois Lerner’s emails

“If the latest revelations about the IRS are correct, then its officials have approached the abuse-of-power scandal with a clear strategy, pretty much from the beginning. They have been betting that, since their illegal targeting campaign against those who disagree with President Obama has had the backing of Democrats in Congress, they needed only a media strategy, not a political one. And that media strategy appears to have been: conceal or destroy potential (and actual) evidence, and assume that this activity will be less damaging than whatever is in the files they’ve worked to hide. It’s a direct challenge to the media, in other words.” Will IRS’s Strategy of Destroying Evidence Pay Off?

“The U.S. government is tracking and gathering intelligence on as many as 300 Americans who are fighting side by side with the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria and are poised to become a major threat to the homeland, according to senior U.S. officials. Officials say concern is widespread in Washington that radicalized foreign fighters could return to the homeland and commit terrorist attacks with skills acquired overseas, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the information. Those concerns were heightened by the disclosure Tuesday that a California man was killed fighting alongside militants with the group, also known as ISIS.” Intel believes 300 Americans fighting with Islamic State, posing threat to U.S.: American militants could commit terrorist attacks with skills acquired in Iraq, Syria

“They do not claim to be at war with the United States. They are at war with the United States. Even Obama’s own deputy national security adviser, Ben Rhodes, admitted that the Foley execution “represents a terrorist attack against our country.” And for the Islamic State, that was only the beginning. It will not be satisfied with killing one U.S. citizen in the deserts of the Middle East. It wants to kill many thousands right here in the United States of America. [Snip] Up until now, Obama has been more concerned with stopping mission creep than stopping the Islamic State. That needs to change. Taking back the Mosul dam was great. But we’ll know Obama is serious when he helps local forces retake Mosul itself — and drives the Islamic State from its havens in Iraq and Syria that it should never have been allowed to take in the first place.” What Obama doesn’t get about the Islamic State

“The outrageous demands were made this month in a letter to Lisa O. Monaco, the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism. Among the signatories is the terrorist front organization Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which has repeatedly proven that it wields tremendous power in the Obama administration. Founded in 1994 by three Middle Eastern extremists, CAIR got the FBI to purge anti-terrorism material determined to be offensive to Muslims. Judicial Watch uncovered that scandal last summer and obtained hundreds of pages of FBI documents with details of the arrangement. JW also published a special in-depth report on the subject in December. CAIR also got several police departments in President Obama’s home state of Illinois to cancel essential counterterrorism courses over accusations that the instructor was anti-Muslim. The course was called “Islamic Awareness as a Counter-Terrorist Strategy” and departments in Lombard, Elmhurst and Highland Park caved into CAIR’s demands. The group responded with a statement commending officials for their “swift action in addressing the Muslim community’s concerns.” CAIR has wielded its power in a number of other cases during the Obama presidency, including blocking an FBI probe involving the radicalization of young Somali men in the U.S. and pressuring the government to file discrimination lawsuits against employers who don’t accommodate Muslims in the workplace.” Muslim Activists Demand Overhaul of All U.S. Law Enforcement Training

The Left

The Left doing the “Freak Out” dance once again! “Burger King plans to merge with Canuck coffee-and-doughnut chain Tim Hortons and base the company’s headquarters in Canada where it will enjoy the kind of reasonable corporate tax structure that Democrats continue to obstruct here in the United States. And the move has provoked a fresh round of moral panic, faux patriotism and confusion. The Left’s Ridiculous Burger King Freakout [Snip] With all that said, the Burger King move isn’t really about “inversion” anyway. This is a merger. Tim Hortons has a $9.9 billion market cap and generated more revenue than Burger King last year, so it seems implausible that the deal was made for reasons of tax sedition alone. When you merge with a company from another country, one that helps diversify your reach worldwide, it seems like a basic fiduciary responsibility to place your headquarters in the spot that offers you the best business climate. And though Burger King’s won’t save much in the immediate future, the long-term prospects of choosing Canada will. And that’s probably what’s driving a lot of this overwrought reaction to this merger. The consequences of high corporate taxation could not be more apparent. If established American brands like Burger King are willing to “leave” the country, it won’t matter how much hyperbole Democrats throw around, others will do the same. It’s certainly possible that the left will generate enough of a racket to convince the fast food giant to surrender on inversion. But, as we’ve seen, most companies can’t be shamed out of making the right decision.” A Pro-Hamas Left Emerges: In the pursuit of political goals and an anti-Israel message, Historians Against the War has abandoned the standards of its profession and adopted a stance that objectively supports Hamas’s war aims.

The Mainstream Press

“Fiscal profligacy has been a conservative concern of near paramount importance since the 110th Congress passed Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) bailout funding – a development that many believe gave rise to the conservative insurgent movement which later became known as the tea party. Since then, tea party conservatives have been expressing deep concerns about the government spending ranging from the Affordable Care Act, to the Recovery and Reinvestment Act, to Defense Department procurement waste, to ballooning entitlement spending and liabilities, to the nation’s nearly $18 trillion in debt. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. [Snip] Most of these concerns were scoffed at and dismissed by the media when they weren’t ignored outright. Publicizing any of this waste is of little value to the public, the press apparently surmised. But when Republicans get it in their heads to enforce the separation of powers and put a Democratic president in a political bind by compelling him to administer all the provisions of a deeply unpopular law he championed, then all of the sudden the media finds itself incensed by the application of American tax dollars to such a frivolous cause. [Snip] At least we know the press is capable of expressing concern over wasteful spending given the right conditions. Who knows? If there is a Republican president and a GOP congress in 2017, maybe the media will wake to the reality that not every cent spent by the federal government is crucial to Americans’ wellbeing. Just don’t hold your breath.” Press finally shocked at government spending… in the House GOP’s Obamacare lawsuit

“Three new Federal Reserve surveys reveal Obamacare continues to force employers to slash jobs and hours in response to the unpopular healthcare overhaul, reports The Wall Street Journal. Last Thursday, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia reported findings from its Obamacare business survey, revealing that 18.2% of employers are cutting jobs and employees as a result of Obamacare. Moreover, 18% said they have also had to shift more of their workers to part time. The New York Federal Reserve study found similar findings, with 21% of New York manufacturers and 16.9% of service businesses reporting reductions in the number of workers they employ due to Obamacare. Lastly, the Atlanta Federal Reserve’s study found that 34% of businesses that do not cover health insurance plan to hire fewer full-time workers due to Obamacare’s tax penalty for companies with more than 50 workers.” OBAMACARE CONTINUES TO DESTROY JOBS

The mainstream press once again doing it’s best to make us think Obamacare is swell, and won’t have any impact at all on the the November 2014 elections. “The voters didn’t get that memo. They revile the health care law more than ever. Even the left-leaning Huffington Post admits, “A majority of Americans disapprove of Obamacare, the highest share since President Barack Obama’s health care reforms became law more than four years ago.” And this isn’t due to ignorance about the law, as its supporters frequently claim. The voters have been inundated with information about “reform,” and they have correctly concluded that it will do more harm than good. A recent Rasmussen surveyreveals that likely voters in general expect Obamacare to have an adverse effect on American health care. More to the point, Obamacare is an important factor in the “enthusiasm gap.” According to a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, “The Republican Party holds a clear advantage in voter engagement in this fall’s midterm elections.” Why? The answer has long been obvious. Politico spelled it out months ago: ‘Obamacare will be a huge voting issue for Republicans.… They’ll turn out in droves because they hate the law.’” OBAMACARE ISN’T GOING AWAY AS CAMPAIGN ISSUE: Latest media meme is just as phony as its predecessors.

Desperation. “These threats to religious liberty are real and serious. But what makes them even more alarming is that they exist because, as Capretta writes, they “purposely wrote a coercive and overbearing HHS mandate rule to create a political issue. The president’s campaign team wanted objections to the rule because the objectors could then be demonized as waging a ‘war on women.’ That would presumably help drive Obama supporters to the polls in 2012.’” White House Tries To Reignite Birth Control Wars Because YOLO

Just Because the Mainstream Press Isn’t Telling You About It, Doesn’t Mean You Shouldn’t Know About It: News You Should Know for August 26

Stories of the Day

Which one of these isn’t a real job Mr. Foust (Democrat candidate for congress in VA)? “The campaign mentioned that Barbara Comstock got her first job at a movie theater while in high school and continued to earn money typing papers, waitressing, babysitting, working as a sales clerk, and “all the kinds of jobs so many women and men have taken on to work through high school and college and support their families.” “As a stay at home Mom, Comstock spent her time raising two young boys during the day and attending Georgetown Law School at night,” the campaign said. “Following graduation from Georgetown, she had her daughter and then when she returned to work as a senior aide to Congressman Frank Wolf, she worked on federal employee issues, health care issues, transportation issues, business issues and appropriations issues.” Comstock also worked as chief counsel to the House Government Reform Committee and a senior Justice Department official after 9/11, and started two businesses, Corallo Comstock, LLC, and Comstock Strategies. She is now a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, where she has served since 2009.” Democrat’s ‘Bizarre and Sexist’ Attack on Comstock Falls Flat: Democrat Foust Attacks Comstock: ‘I Don’t Think She’s Even Had a Real Job’

Things going exactly as the Democrats planned. Get enough people living off the government dole, and they’ll be voting Democrat forever. “The Dole: New data on federal public assistance programs show we’ve reached an ignominious milestone: More than 100 million Americans are getting some form of “means-tested” welfare assistance. The Census Bureau found 51 million on food stamps at the end of 2012 and 83 million on Medicaid, with tens of millions of households getting both. Another 4 million were on unemployment insurance. The percentage of American households on welfare has reached 35%. If we include other forms of government assistance such as Medicare and Social Security, almost half of all households are getting a check or other form of government assistance. The tipping point is getting closer and closer. So much is shocking and dismaying about these numbers. How is it that the number of recipients and the price tag for many of these programs kept skyrocketing though the recession officially ended in 2009? Normally, you’d expect welfare caseloads to fall in a recovery as the unemployment rate dips, but this time welfare participation keeps expanding. Perhaps this is because this administration and many Democrats in Congress, including Rep. Nancy Pelosi, have told Americans that welfare benefits are a stimulus to the economy (sic). Apparently, the left believes that if every family were on food stamps, the economy would return to its glory days.” Government Dependency In U.S. Nears The Tipping Point

Smart people are looking for alternatives to the lies of Leftist journalists. “Because progressives dominate 90% of media outlets and studiously ignore major stories like the IRS scandals, Benghazi, and basically anything harmful to Democrats, Fox News is handed the opportunity to reach the public with distinctive content unavailable elsewhere, and the public is responding. Most major media would rather be progressive than successful. But then again, progressivism almost never works as it promises, based as it is on a false notion that human nature can be perfected with the appropriate institutional arrangements (including, of course, a media structure that plays along). CNN and MSNBC prefer to live in that make-believe land, and are suffering the cosequences.” Cable Karma: Fox News soars as CNN reportedly to announce huge layoffs

You won’t be reading about this any time soon in the mainstream press. “According to a new Sunday Times report by Toby Harden,“Pentagon sources said Foley and the others might well have been rescued but Obama, concerned about the ramifications of US troops being killed or captured in Syria, took too long to authorise the mission.” It’s claimed that Obama was concerned about his administration beingCarterized had the mission failed. [Snip] However, it also seems worth noting that the eventual timing of the mission may have made for a nice July 4th weekend announcement for Obama had the mission succeeded. Instead, Obama played golf on July 5th, as well as an additional six times in the month he is said to have spent agonizing over his decision, the delay of which may have cost journalist Foley his life.

Anthony Shaffer, a former lieutenant-colonel in US military intelligence who worked on covert operations, said: ‘I’m told it was almost a 30-day delay from when they said they wanted to go to when he finally gave the green light. They were ready to go in June to grab the guy [Foley] and they weren’t permitted.’” Report: Obama Delayed James Foley Rescue a Month, Fretting over His Image and Golfing

I am not convinced yet that enough of us are angry. Too many people are simply not paying attention, or are drinking the Leftist propaganda dished out to them every night on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and MSNBC. Emphasis mine.America is suddenly angry at the laxity, incompetence, and polarizing politics of the Obama administration, the bad optics of the president putting about in his bright golf clothes while the world burns. Certainly, no recent president has failed on so many fronts — honesty, transparency, truthfulness, the economy, foreign policy, the duties of the commander-in-chief, executive responsibilities, and spiritual leadership. For those who are “shocked” at the present meltdown, of a magnitude not seen since the annus horribilis of 1979, in their defense: Obama certainly did not campaign on a new health-care plan that would force Americans to give up the doctors they liked and their existing coverage, while raising premiums and deductibles, while giving exemptions for insiders and cronies, and while raising the deficit. Nor did we hear on the campaign trail that Obama would push gay marriage, open borders, near-permanent zero interest rates, six consecutive $1 trillion deficits, and record food-stamp and Social Security disability payouts. He criticized Bush for relatively minor executive orders, suggesting that he would never rule by fiat — as he since has done in matters of Obamacare, immigration law, and environmental regulations. Remember the promise of ending the revolving door and stopping aides from cashing in — and then follow the post-administration careers of Obama’s closest advisers. Obama promised to halve the deficit — not run up more red ink than almost all prior presidents combined. Indeed, he once as a senator voted against raising the debt limit and blasted Bush for borrowing from China. He once sermonized to us that the presidency is serious stuff, that it entails inordinate personal sacrifice and even a virtual absence of downtime and vacation — and then he became just the sort of president he was critiquing. But those deceptions were simply politics as usual, and it was logical for the hard leftist Barack Obama to try to appear to be a moderate, given that no Northern liberal had won the presidency in the half-century since John F. Kennedy.” Victor Davis Hanson: The Madness of 2008: A nation became unhinged by trivialities like “hope and change.” It has now awakened.

“It is a whole lot easier to understand how the voter was fooled in 2008 by Obama the smooth-talking newcomer who was (as he himself said) a blank screen on which people could project what they wanted, than to understand America’s much greater insanity in 2012, when that screen had been filled in with the picture of a lying leftist con man. Hanson also says that America has now woken up; at least that’s what the article’s subtitle indicates. But has it? It has, but not enough for me—not nearly enough. Obama’s poll numbers would have to be down around 20 or so to convince me. What’s more, Hillary Clinton’s would have to be down there in the sub-basement, too. I hate to sound so pessimistic. And I’m not completely pessimistic; at least there has finally been some disgust with Obama’s presidency; I’ve heard it myself. But I’m not with Hanson on this one.” Victor Davis Hanson on the madness of America in 2008

From the comments: “The culture is giving way to insanity.” “A sign advertising the bacon at a Vermont diner has been taken down after a Muslim resident complained about the sign on the Internet and sparked a massive backlash against the restaurant, Sneakers Bistro. In June, in return for taking part in a local volunteer initiative to plant flower beds in the city’s traffic medians, the diner was awarded a sign on a lamp post that said “Yield for Sneakers Bacon.” A woman took issue with the sign, calling it insensitive to those who don’t eat pork, according to WPTZ. The woman’s objection, which she posted online, prompted several Facebook and Yelp comments calling on Sneakers Bistro to take down the sign. The diner’s owners contacted the woman to apologize and tell her the sign has been removed.” Vermont Diner’s Bacon Sign Taken Down for Offending Muslims

There’s nothing to see here folks. Move along now, and trust you’re government: Benghazi, the IRS scandal, Fast and Furious, to name just a few, and now this… “The White House on Friday rejected findings by the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) that President Obama broke the law when he swapped Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for five Taliban leaders from Guantánamo Bay. “We strongly disagree with GAO’s conclusion, and we reject the implication that the administration acted unlawfully,” White House spokesman Eric Schultz said. “The president has the constitutional responsibility to protect the lives of Americans abroad, and specifically to protect U.S. servicemembers.” The GAO report, released Thursday, said the Pentagon violated a law that requires the administration to inform Congress at least 30 days before any prisoner exchange from Guantánamo Bay. It also said the Defense Department wrongly used $988,400 from a wartime appropriations to facilitate the transfer.” Obama rejects finding that he broke the law in Bergdahl swap

Big Government

Our government and big business are operating hand-in-hand and they aren’t that much into “we the people” anymore. “Our unsecured border is really a case of the Federal government waging war on one hated demographic, and one obsolete demographic. The elites of this country hate white people for being too independent minded; in 2012 a USDA office disdainfully described white Appalachian residents who would not take food stamps as being afflicted with “mountain pride.” The US Chamber of Commerce simply cares far more about corporate profits than the citizens of the country, as evident by their endless push for amnesty. They are nakedly advocating in order to drive wages down. Such a scheme can only work when government’s large safety net picks up the legions of unemployed. The foolish business-Republicans have clearly not considered the taxes which will surely be required to pay for this policy. The American citizenry is getting in the way of the American government.” Where Governmental Incompetence Ends and Malice Begins

Insanity. “All is well, citizens of Ohio. You are now safe from the Sith-like menace of the Elyria pink cookie.

“New federal nutritional guidelines for school cafeterias has meant the end of a favorite — and locally famous — treat in one northeast Ohio school district. The federal government’s edict to provide healthier foods and cut fats and cholesterol put an end of the sale of the traditional Elyria pink cookie — a buttery sweet treat with pink icing.”

What’s the point of all this? At this stage in the game, it wouldn’t even be worth noting were it not for the fact that Jim Geraghty has now made me exceptionally hungry for cookies. But it does serve as the umpteenth layer of examples of the nanny state managing to dump the entire apple cart. (Apple pie cart?) If you found an example of a school serving the kids nothing but a diet of Hot Pockets and pop rocks, it would certainly be a case for the parents and officials – at the local level – to step in with the school board and put a stop to it. But the occasional serving of a local favorite dessert treat? When you turn that job over to Washington, the seemingly inevitable result is the cleansing of the school system of horrors such as this. Well done, federal government. You’ve made the world a safer, if much stupider place.” Obama administration routs scourge of ISIS pink cookies in schools

The thought police are coming to a corner of your internet very soon. “This is a real head shaker that should send chills down your spine. Washington Free Beacon:

The federal government is spending nearly $1 million to create an online database that will track “misinformation” and hate speech on Twitter.

The National Science Foundation is financing the creation of a web service that will monitor “suspicious memes” and what it considers “false and misleading ideas,” with a major focus on political activity online.” [Snip]

There’s a reason the First Amendment is so unambiguous. It’s to keep tyrants like these people from inflicting their views on the rest of us and preventing others from freely expressing themselves. It sounds like the perfect vehicle for left wing academics to “prove” what nasty, lying, hateful people conservatives are. It will be just one more weapon used by the left to savage the right. The only thing this “service” will prevent is freedom of expression by putting a damper on those with controversial or fringe ideas. Will no one rid us of these meddlesome tyrants.” Government to track political speech on internet

Dr. Ben Carson

I don’t know if Dr. Carson would make a good president, but he is an awesome spokesperson for the cause of conservatism… “You can see from this conversation why Carson would be such a compelling candidate. And oh, how nice it would be if African Americans would listen to him instead of people like Jackson and Al Sharptongue. Carson’s message, at its core, and less politely put by me, is that while yes, there is still some racism and racial profiling out there, the overwhelmingly effective thing young black men can do to avoid adverse encounters with the police is to commit fewer crimes. And that will require a serious self-examination by African Americans and significant cultural changes.[Snip] Why do so few of our public leaders have the courage of Dr. Carson to deliver the bad news to African Americans that change will have to be worked for and must come largely from within? Instead, you have people like Al Sharptongue pedaling the easy, happy message – to plaudits from the White House and the media – that someone else is responsible for the pain in the black community. Instead of a serious solution, we get this kind of thing from PBS’ Gwen Ifill on Meet the Press – talk of a new civil rights movement – as the other panelists nod their heads in ponderously politically correct agreement. [Snip] The best thing the government can do is eliminate the disincentives for work and get out of the way. Liberals, stop killing black people with your generosity and good intentions. It only makes you feel better, not them.” Ben Carson Batters Jesse Jackson with Logic

I probably excerpted too much from the original article, but you really need to read this and I know that most of you don’t click on over to the links… “Probably we should all be past being shocked at what goes on in the public schools, but I confess that an email I got today from Devin Foley of Better Ed shocked me. It quoted descriptions, written by Twin Cities area high school teachers, of how their schools teach literature classes. This one comes from Edina High School, which was once known as an excellent institution:

Acceptance and inter-cultural understanding can be fostered through the use of powerful texts, discussion, analysis, and exploration in the classroom. An English curriculum grounded in social justice rests on a belief based in equity—that each person should have access to resources regardless of race, gender, ability, age, socio-economic status, or sexual orientation.

“Access to resources”? What does that mean?

Additionally, a social justice framework is grounded in a belief that children are the foundation of our future, and that schools, therefore, can (and should) play a significant role in shaping an equitable landscape of that future. Social justice teaching asks students to think critically about texts–to question whose voices are heard in a text and whose are silenced, who’s being overly served and who’s being under-served, how power affects the text, and how we know what we know–and to think critically about their power and role in effecting meaningful change in both personal, local, and immediate contexts, as well as in global contexts. Additionally, English classes are charged with a preparing students to be critical creators, consumers, and participators in a media infused, global 21st century that is already well underway.

Literature as liberal BS. If I had a kid in that school, I would pull him or her out tomorrow. This one is from a teacher at Woodbury High School:

At Woodbury High School, the [literature] course is primarily structured chronologically. Social, economic, cultural and political frameworks of the readings are sometimes explored explicitly through eight critical lenses: feminist, deconstruction, new criticism, new historical/biographical, reader response, post-colonial, psychological and Marxist theory. Students apply critical literary elements such as figurative language, symbolism, and motif to find author’s intent.

This is mis-education, worse than not attending school at all. Any child of normal intelligence would gain more from staying up late at night and reading books with a flashlight under the covers than from being subjected to such cant. For many students, such palpable bullshit is likely to ruin literature forever.” WHAT ARE YOUR KIDS LEARNING IN SCHOOL?

I am doing my happy dance. Emphasis mine. “Democrats wondering if their hopes of keeping the Senate could receive any more hits this week got their answer yesterday: a new poll found Scott Brown trailing incumbent Senator Jeanne Shaheen by just two points. It’s either an outlier or a lagging indicator–more likely an outlier, but bound to give Democrats a scare either way. That’s because if the race appears close, they’ll have to spend time, money, resources, etc. trying to fend off a challenge from an opponent given a new sense of momentum and likely able to improve his own fundraising on the news of apparently improving poll numbers. And at this point, with the way the Democrats’ luck has been going, they’d be tempting fate to dismiss a sign that their standing might be going from bad to worse.” Why an Outlier New Hampshire Poll Might Mean More Trouble for Dems

Another socialist exposed within the Democrat party! “As we reported on August 16th, Montana Democrats had s quick meeting to replace John Walsh as their Senate candidate after revelations that he had plagiarized his master’s degree work. They selected Amanda Curtis, a Montana state representative. Noah followed that up with some revelations that Curtis was on record with some statements which were pretty far left, even by the standards of coastal Democrats.

Curtis mocks gun ownership, religion, family values, concern over the $17.6 trillion national debt, and self-identifies as an anarchist. Montana most certainly has a historic blue streak, but Curtis is a candidate so openly left-wing that she would have trouble winning a statewide race – much less the Democratic Party’s nomination — in even traditionally blue states.

If some recent revelations prove true, the items that Noah highlighted are small potatoes to Curtis. American Commitment has dug up some interesting Facebook information which purports to show Curtis at a funeral with members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

Rep. Curtis was nominated for the United Stated Senate by the Montana Democratic Party on August 16, 2014. Less than two weeks earlier, on August 4, she tagged herself in this photograph featuring IWW banners and identifying Curtis as an FW, or “Fellow Worker,” the term used in IWW for group members:

Her husband Kevin Curtis is the Butte delegate to the IWW’s statewide group, known as Two Rivers General Membership Branch. The telephone number listed for Mr. Curtis in his role with IWW is the same number Rep. Curtis lists as her primary contact for legislative constituents.

The mission statement for the Two Rivers General Membership Branch of IWW (of which Kevin Curtis is a leader and Amanda Curtis is a member) is:

The Two Rivers General Membership Branch consists of members of the Industrial Workers of the World, a.k.a. Wobblies, from across the state of Montana (Missoula, Hamilton, Butte, and Billings). We are working to organize the people of Montana into the One Big Union to end wage slavery and eventually end the capitalist system.” Montana Dems replace plagiarist Senate candidate with… a socialist?

Hillary Clinton

The first black’s president’s wife and possible candidate for president on the Democrat ticket apparently has nothing to say. “I couldn’t care less, but I’m happy to amplify liberal hand-wringing here in the interest of making her squirm.” Lefties starting to wonder: Why hasn’t Hillary said anything about Ferguson?

“No one should doubt that modern leftists like Her Highness Hillary and the Obamas believe that they are our betters, and that they richly deserve every dime they can extract for personal benefit from their subjects. These are not the kind of people our Founders had in mind when they designed a system they hoped would hold greedy, self-righteous hypocrites and their grifters in check. If we let such people control it much longer, that system will soon exist in name only.” Entitled: Her Highness Hillary and our leftist overlords.

The emails have been there all along. “They just don’t want to look.” For months on end, Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen insisted that Lois Lerner‘s emails were destroyed when her computer’s hard drive failed. Koskinen even told Congress that IRS “moved heaven and earth” trying to recover the emails but simply could not find a way to do so. Now, thanks to a determined federal judge, the country learns that all government emails are preserved in a doomsday kind of database. Lerner’s emails never were lost. They just don’t want to look. But here’s the kicker: According to Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton, government lawyers told U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan on Friday that “this back-up system would be too onerous to search.” Yes, too onerous. “This is a jaw-dropping revelation. The Obama administration had been lying to the American people about Lois Lerner’s missing emails,” Fitton added.” Is there no end to the Obama administration’s duplicity in the IRS scandal?

There IS a serious cover up, and God willing, the evil-doers will be exposed. “The IRS is behaving as if it is desperately trying to cover–up serious crimes. Despite assurances that Lois Lerner’s emails are unavailable thanks to a hard drive crash and subsequent “recycling” (by the way, what exactly does that mean?), an IRS official revealed to Judicial Watch that backup copies probably do exist, but that the agency thinks it is too much trouble to go and get them. [Snip] There is just enough time for this scandal to explode and affect the 2016 elections. Almost certainly, Barack Obama will pardon Lois Lerner and other implicated IRS officials on the lst day of his term in office. But this scandal, which dwarfs Watergate in serousness (sic), will not go away.” IRS cover-up revelation #1 today

This is a hundred times worse than Watergate, but yet the mainstream press continues to hope it goes away. “An IRS filing has revealed that Lois Lerner’s Blackberry, containing emails alleged lost in a computer crash, was destroyed by the IRS after the congressional inquiry had begun. The potential criminality is the sort of thing that federal judges frown upon, and there may be serous consequences ahead. Sidney Powell reports in the New York Observer:

The IRS filing in federal Judge Emmet Sullivan’s court reveals shocking new information. The IRS destroyed Lerner’s Blackberry AFTER it knew her computer had crashed and after a Congressional inquiry was well underway. As an IRS official declared under the penalty of perjury, the destroyed Blackberry would have contained the same emails (both sent and received) as Lois Lerner’s hard drive. (snip)

…a year after the infamous hard drive crash, the IRS destroyed Ms. Lerner’s Blackberry—and without making any effort to retain the emails from it.

Judge Sullivan has had to pry information from the IRS to learn anything about Ms. Lerner’s Blackberry. Now, with these latest revelations, I’m confident he’s not finished. [Snip]

The legal implications are severe:

This most recent revelation of destruction of evidence and refusal to retain data and documents despite a Congressional inquiry is beyond outrageous. It screams of guilt and creates a presumption in the law that the evidence would prove what those who were targeted and harassed claim.
This opens the gates for the civil lawsuits, including that by Z-Street, that could bust open the IRS scandal, independent of any congressional unquiries (sic).” IRS cover-up revelation #2 today

“I don’t want to alarm anyone. But somebody sympathetic to ISIS is taking pictures of U.S. landmarks and holding up a very clear ISIS message: we’re already here. [Snip] Maybe it’s just some nut. Or two nuts. Or a network of nuts. But . . . If you’re ISIS, hitting the U.S. homeland is the jackpot, right? We’re about three weeks away from an early September date that means a lot to Americans and Islamist extremists. Wouldn’t you figure the bad guys would want to do something that day?” Are ISIS ‘External Operations’ Already Under Way?

“ISIS threatened Chicago recently with a photo on Twitter. Here is the original tweet posted on The Gateway Pundit on August 9, 2014. WGN reported:

There is another chilling Chicago connection in the battle between the US. and extreme Islamic militants isil (ISIS).

First there’s the beheading of the journalist who was the Northwestern graduate.

Now WGN Investigates has found an online war of words and disturbing images that includes an implied threat to a Chicago landmark building.” ISIS Threatens Chicago Hit on Twitter

Oh goody. Emphasis mine. “One of a number of Americans estimated to be fighting on the battlefields of the Middle East under an ISIS banner died in combat this week. But he was not just any American. This man who fought under the flag of a group which had just assassinated an American journalist by beheading as part of an ultimatum to the United States had among the most American names ever conceived. “Douglas McAuthur McCain, of San Diego, California, was killed over the weekend fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), according to the Free Syrian Army,” NBC News confirmed. McCain’s identity was revealed when the contents of his pockets were found to contain $800 and an American passport. An American dies in combat in Syria… fighting for ISIS

Distractions. “The attraction of Ferguson was it offered them momentary escape into a re-enaction of the Old Days. Freedom Rider and all that. But it’s 2014 and not 1964 and when Ferguson fades, ISIS and Putin and the recession will still be there. Neither Obama nor the Left can handle the truth, so they won’t handle it. Therefore they will remain transfixed, in a state compounded of fear, nervous laughter, bravado and denial, until a hit big enough comes along to snap them out of it. But the fear is there. It was there even when Remnick interviewed Obama in January. Like a man feeling the first indefinite symptoms of a disease, he must have guessed something was wrong and already thinking of how to shift the blame.

“One of the things that I’ve learned to appreciate more as President is you are essentially a relay swimmer in a river full of rapids, and that river is history,” he later told me. “You don’t start with a clean slate, and the things you start may not come to full fruition on your timetable.”

Rumsfeld would have guessed Obama would look for someone to blame, for that was a known known. The catastrophes and cascade of failures had one simple cause in his universe: someone else.  The buck stops there. His predecessor had dropped the baton in the relay race of history and it was his sad duty to be the victim. Whatever betide, whatever befall,  remember: he could have been a contender.” Paradigms Lost

“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” “Even now, the Obama administration is talking about “smart power” as an alternative to “boots on the ground”. What is the force of this distinction? There is only one kind of power that can demoralise and eventually destroy a movement that is beyond reason. This may come as a shock to a White House that seems to have so much faith in the magical power of language, but if military intervention is categorically ruled out, then no amount of smart talk will be any use.” Isil: the world must tackle this mass psychosis: Take away its success and the glamour will go, leaving only a rump of fanatics

“One of the notable things about the Obama administration isn’t simply that its key figures often make misleading claims, but that they do so in ways that can be so easily disproven. [Snip] What we’ve shown, then, is that several weeks before the New Yorker story was published, the al-Qaeda flag flying over Falluja belonged to ISIS/ISIL. The president knew it. There is therefore only one possible interpretation: the president had ISIS/ISIL in mind when he made his “jayvee” reference. And there’s only one possible conclusion about what Mr. Earnest said: It’s false. He’s distorting the truth in order to exonerate his boss, the president, from having made a statement that was deeply and dangerously misinformed. The White House press corps should vigorously pursue this matter with the White House press secretary; and he in turn should admit what he said was false. If Mr. Earnest doesn’t do so in light of this evidence, then his claim will move from the category of being false to being a lie. That would trouble me; and I would think it would trouble them.” The White House Press Secretary Isn’t Telling the Truth. And I Can Prove It.

“But instead of dismissing the Perry reboot as another example of his dimwittedness, media critics would do well to look into the subject a little more closely. As it happens, despite Obama administration attempts to downplay the issue, the question of Islamist terror in the Western hemisphere is not a figment of Perry’s imagination or a red herring designed to inflame passions about border security. Terror groups such as Hezbollah that are backed by Iran have already been operating in Central and South America. As CNN reported in June of last year, there was plenty of evidence of terror activity as Iran and Hezbollah mined these regions for both funding and recruits. As is the case of the Taliban, terror groups are heavily involved in the illegal drug trade. But the trail in the Southern Hemisphere doesn’t begin or end with connections to the trafficking of cocaine. As a report from the American Enterprise Institute from last year shows, Hezbollah does not operate as a “lone wolf” on this side of the Atlantic. Nor are its activities limited to Iran’s ally Venezuela, as there is reason to believe it is operating throughout the continent. [Snip] “Instead of laughing off Perry’s rhetoric or pretending that Islamists have no interest in attacking the U.S. via its exposed southern border, Americans ought to be echoing the governor’s concerns. For the last few years, both liberals and libertarians on the right have been claiming that the threat from Islamist terror has been hyped out of proportion and vastly exaggerated. But the events unfolding in Iraq show that terrorism not only survived the death of Osama bin Laden but also may have metastasized on President Obama’s watch. A September 10th mentality may still be fashionable in some quarters of both major political parties but it does not constitute a viable approach for either foreign or security policy in 2016. We don’t know whether Rick Perry will turn out to be a credible presidential candidate in 2016. But those who are laughing at his border terror speech are the ignoramuses in this particular debate, not the governor.” Don’t Dismiss Perry’s Border Terror Charge

There they go again, with their Friday afternoon news dumps. “After getting stung two months ago by the Hobby Lobby decision, the Obama administration had to go back to the drawing board to salvage the HHS contraception mandate. Late yesterday, HHS announced a new “accommodation” that supposedly will pass court muster after the Supreme Court decision, but will it? [Snip] How serious is this proposal? Well, offering it in a Friday night document dump certainly doesn’t instill much confidence in the effort. Why not roll this out during a substantial news cycle? After all, the Hobby Lobby decision was a high-profile loss by the White House, so offering something under the media radar should raise suspicions about just why the administration wants to push this out in the most low-profile manner possible.” Friday night document dump: Yet another “accommodation” on HHS mandate

President Obama

Befuddled. “Even some of the president’s original supporters here at home will tell you privately they are befuddled by the president’s actions and they have given up on expecting anything good. The latest example is the Billings Gazette’s reversal on their endorsement of Obama in 2008, saying “it’s the number of bungled or blown policies in the Obama administration which lead us to believe Obama has earned every bit of an abysmal approval rating.” Even those who endorsed the president feel compelled to say their endorsement is no longer warranted. The disappointment with this president is rampant. It is one thing to be a lame duck and struggle to be effective; it’s another to just quit. It’s alarming to think this president has two more years in office.  Let’s all hope for the best.” The Insiders: Is Obama acting like a former president?

Our emperor has no clothes, but he’s got some awesome golf clubs. “Sometimes a round of golf is just a round of golf. And sometimes it reveals the essence of a man. President Obama’s decision to hit the links and yuk it up with pals immediately after speaking about the beheading of James Foley was no ordinary mistake. Nor was it a simple gaffe. The decision continues to cause an uproar because, like an X-ray, there is no escaping the image. It shows there is no there there. With even his media praetorian guard appalled, the golf outing is sparking a wider understanding that Obama is hollow, empty of the routine qualities Americans expect from their president. Simple decency and respect for Foley’s horrified parents should have been enough to sober him. If that didn’t do it, the realization that the Islamic State had declared war on America in the most gruesome fashion imaginable should have sounded a call of duty in his head. Instead, Obama continued with his vacation and was photographed looking as if he didn’t have a care in the world. Suddenly, that megawatt smile that often charmed voters wasn’t so charming. It was vacuous. He looked like an empty-headed frat boy, numb to the world. Maybe that’s not just an appearance. Maybe it’s the truth. Maybe that’s all there is. It is a bitter idea to consider. To say he is a failed president, even unfit, does not rule out the possibility he deeply wants to measure up but doesn’t know how. But what if it’s worse than that? What if, after six years of frustration and failure, he’s just not into being president anymore?” Obama’s golf outing after Foley beheading was a huge mistake

stand alone

Stories of the Day

Sleep well America. President Obama and the rest of his Leftist travelers are in charge. They’ll surely keep us safe. “(Reuters) – The sophistication, wealth and military might of Islamic State militants represent a major threat to the United States that may surpass that once posed by al Qaeda, U.S. military leaders said on Thursday. “They are an imminent threat to every interest we have, whether it’s in Iraq or anywhere else,” Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told reporters at the Pentagon.” Islamic State threat ‘beyond anything we’ve seen’: Pentagon

“It’s amazing how quickly those Sunni fanatic “jayvees” went from a local nuisance to an “imminent threat.” Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel offered that conclusion yesterday in a whiplash-inducing reversal by the same administration that had claimed to have settled the Iraq question once and for all. [Snip] In fact, it’s so much of a threat that the Pentagon isn’t talking about stopping its ability to threaten the US, but merely containing it — and even then, probably for only a temporary period, unless we get serious about actually defeating ISIS. Dempsey also points out that the “open borders and immigration” makes the threat more immediate to NATO nations. [Snip] Perhaps. But what happened after that? Obama went back to the golf course, even while Hagel and Dempsey explained that the supposed “jayvees” have grown into a global imminent threat to the West on Obama’s watch. To paraphrase Glenn “Instapundit” Reynolds, I’ll believe that this administration takes the threat seriously when they start acting like they take it seriously.” Hagel: ISIS beyond “just a terrorist group … imminent threat”

“Utter madness. What kind of sick joke is this? It’s an open invitation to terrorists to avoid being identified on a terrorist watch list by manufacturing this document. Nothing is going to be done about border security until a terrorist attack wakes up the American public to the dangers of an undefended border. Even then, as long as TSA and other government officials continue to implement policies that encourage fraudulent immigration documentation – drivers licenses, notice to appear forms, etc. – the problem of illegal immigrants avoiding the law will continue.” Illegal aliens can fly without verifiable ID

“Most of us, even many Democrats these days, are beginning to acknowledge the complete  foreign policy failure of our president (for an overview see Bret Stephens’ The Meltdown in Commentary),  but we still have to deal with over two years of Obama and we have a serious problem that needs to be handled immediately. We could die.  Not all of us but a lot of us.  And our society as we know it could be destroyed. Sound apocalyptic and a little overwrought? Well, it is apocalyptic, but not so overwrought. Surely you saw the Islamic State video with that journalist’s head being lopped off, not to mention other videos with people being shot in the back and dumped in open pits. You know too that the jihadi who beheaded the journalist was British.  And indeed the Islamic State is comprised of violent religious fanatics from all over the planet who are well armed, virtually a terror army, and rich.  They have explicit instructions to return to their home countries and wreak havoc for the glory of a coming global caliphate.  Also, they have allies from North Africa to the Philippines who more or less seek the same thing under various names.” Build the Border Fence Already!

“Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), the highest-ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, told Oklahoma City FOX affiliate KOKH 25 that because of the threat of groups like ISIS “we’re in the most dangerous position we’ve ever been in as a nation.” “[ISIS], they’re crazy out there, and they’re rapidly developing a method of blowing up a major US city” he said. Inhofe also criticized President Barack Obama’s handling of the ISIS threat, saying “he’s going to have to come up with something that we’re going to do, because they’re holding another hostage in place, and the problem is, the president, quite frankly, he says all these things and he never does them.”  And expressed support for the NSA’s surveillance programs, arguing ‘you have to have an intelligence process going on to stop attacks on America.’” INHOFE: ISIS ‘RAPIDLY DEVELOPING A METHOD OF BLOWING UP A MAJOR US CITY’

Written by Joseph Miller, which is a “pen name for a ranking Department of Defense official with a background in U.S. special operations and combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has worked in strategic planning.”
“On Wednesday, the White House leaked a classified special forces operation to rescue American hostages in Syria. The reason: political cover. The cost: so far, unknown. But this much, we know: The politicized leak of this operation cut through the fog of war to let our enemies know exactly what happened that day in the desert, and because of that, future attempts to free American hostages will be more difficult to plan, farther between, and more dangerous to carry out. [Snip] Wednesday’s selfish, politically motivated leak has reduced the chances for a successful second rescue attempt, and has likely increased the risk to the lives of the hostages still in the Islamic State’s possession. For that, someone should be fired.” Pentagon Official: White House Foley Leak Endangers Future Operations, American Hostages

More on a story from a couple of days ago. “What is driving sentiment in favor of a tougher, rather than a more lenient, approach to illegal immigration. Fairness is, of course, one consideration. However, Conway’s findings suggest that the desire to protect the American worker is paramount. 74 percent agreed with the following proposition: “The government has a responsibility to adopt immigration policies that protect. . .unemployed or low-wage American workers from competition with illegal immigrants for job.” 85 percent of “blue collar workers” agreed with this. Even a majority of those identifying themselves as liberals concurred. The same sentiment is evident in the response to this question: “If U.S. businesses have trouble finding workers, what should happen? They should raise wages and improve working conditions to attract Americans OR more immigrant workers should be allowed into the country to fill these jobs.” WHAT DO AMERICANS BELIEVE ABOUT IMMIGRATION?

Big Government

“Another favorite talking point was that the government’s low administrative costs for Medicare proved that private insurance, with their higher overhead, were inefficient profiteering price gougers, etc. That was one reason for Obamacare’s mandate that insurance companies had to deliver at least 80 percent of premiums in health services. That’s why I’m surprised the front page story in last Saturday’s New York Times hasn’t made a bigger splash: “Pervasive Medicare Fraud Proves Hard to Stop.” How much fraud? The story reports that it is as much as $60 billion a year. That’s 60 with B. A one with nine zeros after it.  Times sixty.  (As Sterling Archer might explain the math.)

Fraud and systematic overcharging are estimated at roughly $60 billion, or 10 percent, of Medicare’s costs every year, but the administration recovered only about $4.3 billion last year. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which is responsible for overseeing the effort, manually reviews just three million of the estimated 1.2 billion claims it receives each year.

And now the final Jeopardy question: anyone think there might be a similar problem with fraud in Food Stamps, Medicaid, unemployment, disability, and so forth? Wait, I forgot; you’re a racist if you ask this.” FRAUD? DID YOU SAY FRAUD?

Mike McFadden is the GOP nominee to take on Al Franken in Minnesota, and the race, while a reach, is winnable. Recall that Franken “won” the race in the big Obama year of 2008 by a handful of disputed votes and while Franken has worked to be invisible, he remains a polarizing, greatly disliked figure in a year when all of the political wind is in his face, not at his back.” Mike McFadden For Senate In Minnesota

“How unpopular are Democrats this cycle? This unpopular.

Last month, Brown trailed Shaheen in the WMUR Granite State Poll by 12 points. The new poll shows Shaheen leading brown by 2 points, 46 percent to 44 percent.

While Barack Obama’s unpopularity is cited as one reason for the huge swing, Brown has also been hammering Shaheen on immigration. Mitt Romney’s recent trip to endorse Brown may not have hurt, either. Whatever the factors, Brown has now moved from long shot, to within the margin of error. That’s not good news for a Democrat Party struggling to retain control of the Senate for Harry Reid.” Brown Erases Double Digit Gap With Shaheen

While things are looking good for the Republicans this election cycle. Don’t get cocky, as Glenn Reynolds from likes to say. Here’s a run down on all the big money being spent to save the Democrats. Who says there’s no big money on the Democrat side? “Super PACs spent July beefing up for the fall campaign. Many groups filed new disclosure reports this week, leaving a paper trail littered with big checks from big names. Democrats dominate the list of notable July donors, as there have simply been more Democratic dollars flowing to that type of outside group this year. There’s still plenty of conservative money out there; it’s just that more of it is going toward nonprofits, which don’t have to disclose their donors. Here are a handful of July super PAC donations that stood out.” Soros, Steyer Spend Big in Bid to Rescue Democrats’ Majority: Financial reports filed this week detail the people—almost all of them men—who gave the most money to super PACs last month.

“The NRSC is on track to clear $70 million in 2014—a fundraising record for the organization. Yet Democrats are raising more. As of the June 30 financial reporting deadline, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee had raised $25 million more than the NRSC—cashing in on Obama events and on the party’s Hollywood and Wall Street patrons. The same is true for the House, where the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has consistently outraised its Republican counterpart this year. Of more concern to Republicans is the money that Democrats are funneling into their outside Super PACs, the campaign vehicles best positioned to damage Republican candidates. The heavyweight in this field is Mr. Reid’s Senate Majority PAC, which—thanks in part to Mr. Reid’s Koch agitation—is landing windfall donations that have turned it into the second-largest spender this cycle after the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. [Snip] Some GOP insiders believe that Republican donors also remain somewhat depressed about the millions that were flushed in past failed attempts to take back the Senate or to elect Mitt Romney. Whatever the reason, total Democratic spending is outpacing Republicans spending by millions in states that could spell the difference to Senate control in November: North Carolina, Colorado and Michigan. This financial mismatch could also hold down GOP gains in the House. The Democratic Party for years has waged a campaign to cow and silence Republican donors—pushing the IRS to target GOP groups, advocating legislation to clamp down on free speech, and publicly harassing private citizens for engaging in elections. Mr. Reid is betting that this campaign will save a majority mired in failed Democratic policy. Republican donors, having dreamed so long of this opportune midterm moment, risk getting outmatched by Mr. Reid again.” Those Koch Attacks Are Working: Democratic Super PACs and party campaign committees are outraising the Republicans.

“I’ve stayed out of the Ferguson controversy. These racial conflagrations are awful, and I learned long ago that any conservative who wades in, even with the best intentions, is eviscerated by the political left. Liberals have decided that all conservatives in their ideological universe need to be racists, and they passionately resist letting anything convince them otherwise. I don’t know enough to know who, exactly, is to blame in Ferguson. That said, here is something I do know, and that I think would benefit readers as they assess the growing animosities in Missouri: I’ve long studied the antics of the American Communist Party, from literally the very beginning. I’ve sat in archives and stared at the first documents that American communists excitedly sent from their offices at 1219 Blue Island Avenue in Chicago to Soviet Comintern headquarters in Moscow. I’ve spent hundreds of hours reading old copies of the Soviet-funded and Soviet-directed Daily Worker. I’ve read countless memoirs by communists who joined the Party, ran it, or even spied for Moscow. I daily check the websites of Communist Party groups. All of that is background to this fact — well-known to anyone who has carefully watched the Communist Party: Communists have long vigorously targeted black Americans for their causes and interests. Adequately laying that out here is impossible, but in my book on Obama’s mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, titled The Communist, I show this at length. Let me restate a few relevant examples.” Communists Descend on Ferguson

-TV crews making small talk and laughing at the spot where Mike Brown was killed, as residents prayed, mourned [Snip] -One reporter who, last night, said he came to Ferguson as a “networking opportunity.” He later asked me to take a picture of him with Anderson Cooper.” There are now hundreds of journalists from all over the world coming to Ferguson to film what has become a spectacle. I get the sense that many feel this is their career-maker. In the early days of all this, I was warmly greeted and approached by Ferguson residents. They were glad that journalists were there. The past two days, they do not even look at me and blatantly ignore me. I recognize that I am now just another journalist to them, and their frustration with us is clear. In the beginning there was a recognizable need for media presence, but this is the other extreme. They need time to work through this as a community, without the cameras. We should all be ashamed, and I cannot do it anymore. I am thankful for my gracious editors who understand that.” I WILL NOT BE RETURNING TO FERGUSON

Harry Reid

“I don’t think you’re smarter than anybody else, but you’ve convinced a lot of us you are,” Reid said, deploying an Asian stereotype with batting an eye. “One problem that I’ve had today is keeping my Wongs straight,” he added, noting that the common Asian surname has apparently made it difficult for him to distinguish one Asian-American from another. LOL. Oh, gosh. That’s just Harry being his precocious self, the press implied. “My comments were in extremely poor taste and I apologize,” he later said. “Sometimes I say the wrong thing.” All is forgiven. But this is not the first time Reid has stepped in it with his blunt racial talk. In the book Game Change, Reid was quoted as backhandedly praising Barack Obama saying that he was especially well-suited to a national campaign because he was “light skinned” and spoke “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” What a scamp. It’s hard to play everyone’s favorite game, “What if a Republican Said it!” with this one, because so few Republicans are as imprudent as Reid was here. Republicans know all too well that they will be savaged in the press for indulging in even mildly insensitive racial humor. The reality is that Reid’s jokes were, while mildly insensitive, essentially harmless – far more harmless, in fact, than what Colbert and O’Donnell said. The reaction to Reid’s line has, however, been conspicuously muted. While the senator’s “jokes” were not intentionally hurtful and are relatively innocuous, the double standard applied to everyone who is not a key Democrat is not.” Let’s play ‘What if a GOP’er Said It’ with Harry Reid’s racially insensitive jokes

James Foley

“Courage,” C.S. Lewis wrote, “is the form that every virtue takes at its testing point.” James Foley demonstrated that in his work and his efforts to bring us those stories. While we debate how to respond to the barbaric evil of ISIS, we should also reflect on the courage it takes to do what Foley did.  [Snip] Foley worked for GlobalPost as a foreign correspondent, and NBC News and GlobalPost collected Foley’s best work from the field in Syria and Libya before his abduction:

“It is as much a letter from ISIS to America as it is to the Foley family. The Global Post decided on Thursday to publish this letter in full:

A message to the American government and their sheep like citizens:

We have left you alone since your disgraceful defeat in Iraq. We did not interfere in your country or attack your citizens while they were safe in their homes despite our capability to do so!

As for the scum of your society who are held prisoner by us, THEY DARED TO ENTER THE LION’S DEN AND WHERE [sic] EATEN!

“Today our swords are unsheathed towards you, GOVERNMENT AND CITIZENS ALIKE! AND WE WILL NOT STOP UNTILL WE QUENCH OUR THIRST FOR YOUR BLOOD,” the letter continued. “You do not spare our weak, elderly, women or children so we will NOT spare yours!” [Snip] The video featuring the execution of James Wright Foley would be made public just six days after this letter was received. There are some who will object to the publication of this letter, perhaps in much the same way that so many were enraged by the New York Post’s decision to publish an image of Foley the moment before he was beheaded by an IS terrorist. That’s not an unjustified emotion, but it is sometimes better to look evil in the eye than to rage against those media outlets that refuse to sanitize reality. These people would like nothing more than to kill you and your family. No one is well-served by being shielded from that fact.” Want to go blind with rage? Read this letter from ISIS to the Foley family

“White House deputy press secretary Eric Schultz was asked at today’s press briefing why the administration was unwilling to negotiate with terrorists in James Foley’s case, yet traded five Taliban for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. “I think, again, what the president made clear at the time of the Guantanamo transfer was that his commitment to the men and women that serve overseas is a bedrock one, that we will leave no man or woman behind. That’s what he was keeping faith with, and that’s something that’s unshakeable for him,” Schultz said. ‘As we’ve made previously clear, the administration determined that it was lawful to proceed with a transfer in order to protect the life of a U.S. servicemember held captive and in danger for almost five years, notwithstanding that Congress did not receive the 30 days’ notice. Again, we disagree with GAO’s conclusion and we reject the implication that the administration acted unlawfully.’” House Explains Why It Swapped 5 Taliban for Bergdahl But Wouldn’t Consider Foley Ransom

“James Foley’s emotional younger brother used an interview on Friday morning to vent his anger and frustration that the US did not do more to help free the kidnapped journalist as it emerged his family have watched the gruesome video of his death. Michael Foley, 38, said he believes the United States let his murdered brother down and said that negotiating with terrorists should be considered, despite the White House refusing to. Clearly disappointed, Foley possibly alluded to problems with the White House behind the scenes as efforts to secure the release of his older brother all ended in failure. Initially hesitant to discuss the controversial issues, Michael Foley said he felt the US did not do everything in its power to save his brother and said watching his fellow hostages return home after European countries paid their ransoms was hard to bear. Michael Foley also appeared ambivalent about the Obama administrations much trumpeted ‘flawless’ rescue mission for the captive reporter, which failed when it assaulted the wrong base and which the Foleys were not informed of.” The US could have done more to free my brother’: Angry younger siblings of James Foley hits out at the White House for failing to prevent the execution – as parents reveal they watched the video

President Obama

“In the 1990s, we heard about the all-night delivery-pizza brainstorm sessions in the Clinton White House. In the teens, we hear about the soporific, self-congratulatory gourmet dinner parties where Obama is the star. In May, the New York Times recently reported, the president “was up well past midnight” hosting Ken Burns and his wife, two business executives, and hedge fund billionaire Tom Steyer—Democratic donors all. “Previous dinners at the White House,” the Times said, “have drawn varied celebrities, including Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Morgan Freeman, and Bono.” When Obama travels overseas, he is more interested in organizing dinners of “interesting Italians” than in organizing the Free World, such as it is, against autocrats and Islamists.  [Snip] This is the life: international travel, motorcades, sycophants and courtiers, tables at the best restaurants, round after round of golf, parties in a cool house, watching the best television shows, meeting all these renowned figures—and having them kiss up to you—ruminating over your legacy, over the causes of polarization, over the geopolitical situation, understanding other peoples’ motivations better than they do. Kramer has nothing on Obama. Politics, terrorists, Iran, Putin, Congress are all distractions. Best to enjoy the experience to the utmost. You are only president once. In the 1990s, America had a holiday from history. Today, it has a president on holiday. The boundary separating vacation from vocation has disappeared. The party won’t end for years. And the hangover will be severe.” 1,461 Days of Summer: Obama’s endless second-term vacation

More on a story from the big story from yesterday. “A story in the New York Times this morning reveals that even the White House isn’t sure how to explain President Obama’s decision to golf immediately after his press conference denouncing Islamic State terrorists for beheading American journalist James Foley. [Snip] Even former Obama aides, such as David Axelrod, David Plouffe, Jon Favreau, Tommy Vietor and Bill Burton who frequently use their freedom to defend Obama on Twitter, did not weigh in on the situation. On MSNBC, only Joe Scarborough appeared defensive of Obama’s position, even though he admitted that he wasn’t sure he was necessarily defending the decision. “I’m merely pointing out these are horrible, horrible optics domestically, but internationally… for terrorists, it’s basically like ‘screw you. Screw you, we’re not going to live by your rules,’” he said on his Morning Joe program. Other MSNBC anchors were willing to criticize Obama’s decision, such as Willie Geist. “You’d think out of respect just for the family even, forget what the press thinks about it, for the family maybe just take a step back and quietly go about your job,” he said. In response to criticism of Obama’s decisions, White House aides only cited Obama’s earlier call with Foley’s family.” EVEN OBAMA’S DEFENDERS CAN’T EXPLAIN OBAMA’S GOLFING DECISION

“Many factors conspired to make O’s golf outing seem distasteful — the brutality of the Foley video, the fact that David Cameron quit his own vacation in response to it, the contradiction in Obama’s vowing to be “relentless” against ISIS before proceeding immediately to the first hole. But the coda to the video showing Sotloff being menaced was the coup de grace politically, I think. Obama shouldn’t (and won’t) give in to ISIS’s demands to stop the bombing in order to spare Sotloff’s life but “fore” is not the proper response when you’re given an ultimatum that involves a man’s head being sawed off. And of course it reinforced the perception that this guy simply doesn’t much like his job anymore. If watching jihadis decapitate an American citizen isn’t enough to interrupt your recreation, what is? But listen: Precisely because there are so many low-information voters out there, I think he’s dead right in how he’s calculated the cost/benefit in all of this. Namely, there’s no cost. Most people won’t care, some who do will forget about it literally tomorrow, and the people who’ll remember it forever were stalwart Obama critics in the first place.” White House: That round of golf after the Foley video was released doesn’t show the depth of Obama’s grief

“But the spectacle of Obama guffawing on the golf course right after issuing a statement of warning to ISIS was not one that is likely to deter other terrorists or nations seeking to test America’s will. Arrogance is a characteristic that can trump all others when one is in the public eye. But what all politicians—be they smart or not so intelligent—eventually learn, is that in public life, sooner or later style becomes substance. The fact that President Obama has yet learned this or is simply too stubborn and arrogant to adjust to the realities of his office tells us all we need to know about what a flawed leader he remains.” The Consequences of Obama’s Arrogance

“The jihadists are building something. They call it the Caliphate, and in a remarkably short amount of time they’ve made enormous progress. If I had to bet, I’d guess that they will ultimately fail, but it will be because someone actually takes the initiative and destroys — as in kills — those trying to build it. Until that happens, there will be more beheadings, more enslaved girls, more mass graves. Obama has been very slow to learn this lesson. Perhaps this is because there’s a deep-seated faith within progressivism that holds that the mere passage of time drives moral evolution. As if simply tearing pages from your calendar improves the world. It is as faith-based as saying evil will not stand because God will not let it, and far, far less effective at rallying men of goodwill to fight. No doubt some people will face death to defend an arbitrary date, but not many. Sometimes lazy TV writers will resort to what is called a deus ex machina, a godlike intervention or stroke of luck that saves the day and ensures a happy ending. But in real life, as in Game of Thrones, that doesn’t happen. The good guys get beheaded while scanning the horizon for a savior more concrete than world opinion and more powerful than a date on the calendar.” Obama’s Made-for-TV Worldview: In real life, Mr. President, the good guys don’t automatically win.

“Obama failed to realize the little bits and pieces could take on a life of their own. When Obama glowered over Putin, treating him like a doorman, little did he imagine that Putin was plotting to turn the tables on him. When he decided to overthrow Khadaffy, planning to cast himself as the protector of the persecuted Libyan masses, the president didn’t really foresee Benghazi. And when he became best buddies with the Gulf States over the Arab Spring it was far from his mind that Foley might be decapitated. The same process was at work domestically. The ongoing recession has been particularly cruel to the black community. But so what, they would vote for him. They would always vote for him. But he needed to get in the good graces of the cops. So he gave them armored vehicles. Together recession and armored vehicles spelled F-e-r-g-u-s-o-n, but how could he anticipate that? But when they came together, he got something he couldn’t buy his way out of with a few Obama phones any more than he can put ISIS back in the bottle with a few airstrikes. So Hagel now realizes that ISIS “is beyond anything we have seen … They marry ideology and a sophistication of strategic and tactical military prowess. They are tremendously well funded.”  All the pieces were there. Obama just thought they were separately harmless and never come together. Can Obama still control all the forces he’s ‘separably’ unleashed?  Maybe the reason he stays in the Vineyard is that he’s guessed the answer.  It’s his psychological bunker, where he waits, hoping for a last minute reprieve from Steiner. He doesn’t know what comes next anymore and frankly, is afraid to look.” It’s Alive

Just Because the Mainstream Press Isn’t Telling You About It, Doesn’t Mean You Shouldn’t Know About It: News You Can Use for August 21

The optics of this are horrible.

The optics of this are beyond horrible. And the media is finally starting to call President Obama on what appears to be a detachment from his actual job.

Stories of the Day

“It isn’t very hard to pretend to be president: Obama did it for five years or so. But now, he can’t be bothered. He leaves his allies with no ammunition with which to defend him, thereby showing, one might argue, even more contempt for them than for his enemies. There is an adage, Hell hath no fury like a liberal scorned. If that is true, Obama is in for a long two years. UPDATE: This is the lead story on the U.K.’s formerly pro-Obama Daily Mail:

Obama golfs

“President Barack Obama teed off again on Thursday, just 24 hours after pictures of his wide grin on the golf course drew condemnation in the wake of the beheading of American photojournalist James Foley. ‘Admit it,’ a White House pool reporter emailed the press corps. ‘You all made small-dollar bets that POTUS would be playing golf today. And … you would be right!’ ‘We are at the Farm Neck Golf Club at 1:13 pm. and POTUS is hitting the links again.’ The president drew fire Wednesday after reacting to Foley’s on-camera slaying for just five minutes, and then gripping his driver. He had told a global audience minutes earlier that ‘when people harm Americans, anywhere, we do what’s necessary to see that justice is done.’ Then he was seen laughing with friends and fist-bumping them during a five-hour round at Farm Neck on Martha’s Vineyard.” Playing golf AGAIN: Obama tees off just 24 hours after being criticized for hitting the course within minutes of solemnly pledging justice for beheaded journalist James Foley

“Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney strongly criticized President Barack Obama on Wednesday night for going golfing immediately after delivering a statement on the beheading of American journalist James Foley. “Every day we find new evidence that he’d rather be on the golf course than he would be dealing with a crisis that’s developing rapidly in the Middle East,” Cheney declared during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity. Earlier in the day, Obama took a break from his vacation in Martha’s Vineyard to give an angry and emotional speech condemning the jihadist group ISIS and praising Foley’s career as a photojournalist. Among other things, Obama called ISIS a “cancer” in the world. According to a White House pool report, Obama then went to Farm Neck Golf Club with former Miami Heat player Alonzo Mourning and others. Cheney, a Republican and one of Obama’s fiercest critics, said Obama should have instead decided to end his vacation and engage the situation. “I noticed the reaction of David Cameron, the British prime minister, when he found out that the individual who apparently did the beheading was speaking with a British accent. He wanted to immediately leave his vacation,” Cheney said. ‘Of course, our president headed to the golf course as soon as he made his relatively, I thought, ineffective statement.’” CHENEY: Obama Would ‘Rather Be On The Golf Course’ Than The Situation Room

“Kristol said, “Its really pathetic, I feel sick really as an American, to have an American get killed, brutal murdered”  and have the president just go out and “look angry.” “I saw that line he said so childishly, really, ‘ISIL has no ideology that’s worthwhile.’ People like this ultimately fail. The Nazis also failed, but they killed 6 million Jews and tens of millions of other people along the way.” “I guess he thinks that’s enough, and now he’s playing golf up on Martha’s Vineyard. David Cameron, the prime minister of England, has much less of a connection, the murderer might be English, and he came home at least as a gesture of respect,” he said.” KRISTOL: OBAMA’S ‘CHILDISH’ ‘PATHETIC’ RESPONSE TO ISIS MADE ME ‘SICK AS AN AMERICAN’

“Barack Obama’s statement on the beheading of James Foley got mixed reviews yesterday, but perhaps tellingly not on MSNBC’s Hardball. Neither Chris Matthews nor Huffington Post’s Howard Fineman appeared too impressed with the anodyne reference to “justice” in the context of the videotaped beheading of an American journalist, but Matthews sounded positively offended by Obama’s vague statement. Let’s just say that Matthews wasn’t feeling any tingles as he demanded that Obama take action rather than allow terrorists to attack Americans with “impunity!” (via Newsbusters). [Snip] Matthews isn’t the only one worried that Obama isn’t taking this seriously. His former deputy director at the CIA, Mike Morell, tells CBS that the White House is greatly underestimating the necessity of direct action and commitment needed to end the ISIS threat. [Snip] Morell also rebuked the White House for leaking the rescue effort. The Obama administration seems ill prepared to deal with this in every conceivable way.” Obama not grasping the seriousness of the Foley murder, says … Chris Matthews?

“I don’t know if something is medically or psychologically wrong with President Obama; whether it’s simply stress or if, God forbid, he has some sort of addiction that is causing him to look like an aging skeleton.  But for some reason this supposedly “charismatic” leader and “great orator” keeps crawling out from his party down private life to address the American people with an apathetic monotone voice and lackadaisical gaze.  He consistently avoids direct eye contact with the camera in the same way a guilty child avoids his parent’s glare. The only time we see him animated and excited is when he’s brimming with hatred at the “right”  that’s when his eyes turn dark and he shoots daggers…exposing an intense anger. It’s disturbing to see an American president more animated and angry over his failed gun legislation than the gruesome beheading of an American citizen perpetrated by a group that his own defense secretary called, “The most brutal, barbaric forces we’ve ever seen…” Is Obama’s Detached Demeanor a National Security Risk?

“When it comes to combatting ISIS, the Obama administration has precious few successes to talk about. So today it touted a failure:

U.S. Special Operations forces staged an unsuccessful operation this summer to rescue photojournalist James Foley and other Americans being held in Syria by Islamic State militants, according to senior Obama administration officials.

The attempt, involving several dozen U.S. commandos, one of whom was injured in a fierce firefight with the militants, was the first known U.S. ground operation in Syria since the country’s descent into civil war. It came after at least six European hostages freed by the militants last spring had been debriefed by U.S. intelligence.

This information comes right after the beheading of ISIS hostage Jim Foley. Obviously, Team Obama wants to show the American public that it did what it could to save Foley, and it should be commended for the attempt. But public relations aside, was it wise for the administration to make this announcement? That’s not clear.” TEAM OBAMA REVEALS THAT IT TRIED TO RESCUE FOLEY

Emphasis mine. “So, why release this information at all? Some suggest that President Barack Obama’s administration has a political incentive to publicize details of the failed raid in the wake of Foley’s death. Operationally, it makes little sense to reveal American Special Forces tactics, particularly in a case in which those tactics were foiled. Some unnamed Pentagon officials agree. “Two Defense Department officials, who spoke separately on the condition of anonymity because of the operation’s delicate nature, expressed anger at the administration for revealing the mission,” The New York Times reported. “One of the officials said the aborted raid had alerted the militants to the Americans’ desire and willingness to try to rescue the hostages, and, in the aftermath, had probably forced the captors to tighten their security.” According to a National Security Council statement, the administration was simply trying to get ahead of reporters who were going to reveal the details of the raid with or without government collaboration. The administration, the NSC claims, would have preferred to have been able to keep this failed mission a secret indefinitely.” Decision to release details of failed raid to free James Foley backfires on White House

“Thursday morning, Shaffer appeared on WMAL radio in Washington, D.C., to discuss the ISIS execution of American journalist James Foley earlier this week. He told me and co-host Brian Wilson that the recently revealed rescue attempt led by Special Forces earlier this summer failed because President Obama was slow to give the go-ahead:

I’m hearing from my friends in the Pentagon, they are giving him every single option way ahead of time. And let me give you a little secret here: The reason that raid into Syria failed to get Foley and those guys was because the president drug his feet. He waited too long, the intel got stale, and by the time we actually gave the “go” word it failed because we just didn’t react quick enough.” Retired Intel Officer: Foley Rescue Attempt Failed Because Obama ‘Dragged His Feet’

As if the above stories weren’t enough, now there’s this… “The Government Accounting Office has concluded that the Obama Defense Department violated section 8111 of the Department of Defense Appropriations Act when it transferred five detainees at Guantanamo Bay to Qatar without providing at least 30 days notice to certain congressional committees. Section 8111 prohibits the Defense Department from using appropriated funds to transfer any individuals detained at Gitmo unless the Secretary of Defense provides such notification. The GAO also found that, by using its appropriations in a manner specifically prohibited by law, DOD violated the Antideficiency Act, as well. The prisoner transfer occurred in May of this year as part of the deal in which the Taliban released Bowe Bergdahl. Naturally, the Defense Department used congressionally appropriated funds to effectuate the transfer. In doing so, says the GAO, it violated the unambiguous terms of section 8111 of the Department of Defense Appropriations Act. Section 8111 prohibits the use of “funds appropriated or otherwise made available” in the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2014, to transfer any individual detained at Guantanamo Bay to the custody or control of a foreign entity “except in accordance with section 1035 of the [FY 2014 NDAA].” GAO: OBAMA ADMINISTRATION VIOLATED LAW IN RELEASING GITMO DETAINEES TO QATAR IN BERGDAHL DEAL

Big Government

“Contempt for government cannot be hermetically sealed; it seeps into everything. Which is why cupcake regulations have foreign-policy consequences. Americans, inundated with evidence that government is becoming dumber and more presumptuous, think it cannot be trusted to decipher foreign problems and apply force intelligently. The collapse of confidence in government is not primarily because many conspicuous leaders are conspicuously dimwitted, although when Joe Biden refers to “the nation of Africa,” or Harry Reid disparages the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision as rendered by “five white men” (who included Clarence Thomas), Americans understand that their increasingly ludicrous government lacks adult supervision. What they might not understand is that Reids and Bidens come with government so bereft of restraint and so disoriented by delusions of grandeur that it gives fighting knives to police and grief to purveyors of non-compliant cupcakes.” Fed Up with Cupcake Cops: Americans are inundated with evidence that the State is becoming dumber and more presumptuous.

Bill Clinton

So much for being just like us regular folks. “Bill Clinton enjoys a Gurkha cigar, “the Rolls Royce of the cigar industry.” He “loves the Gurkhas,” Gurkha chief executive officer Kaizad Hansotia, maker of the HMR cigar, which stands for His Majesty’s Reserve. It is, according to Hansotia, “the world’s most expensive cigar.” One box is $25,000 — and the price will rise next year to $30,000. “The cigars are close to $1,000 each,” says the cigar boss to Bloomberg.”  Bill Clinton Now Enjoys $1,000 Cigars

The Border

“Former CIA covert operations officer Mike Baker said that he believes there is “a lot of communication” between ISIS and Mexican drug cartels given past efforts by al Qaeda to do likewise on Thursday’s “Laura Ingraham Show.” “We’ve had good intel over the years about al Qaeda, about their efforts to coordinate with, as an example, Mexican cartels…in an effort to try to exploit our southern border” he reported, adding that a terrorist group like ISIS “absolutely” knows about the lack of security on the border. Baker stated he believes there is ‘a lot of communication” between ISIS and drug cartels. And “the cartels are a business … if there’s a revenue stream they can exploit, then they will, and the extremists understand that.’” FORMER CIA OFFICER: ‘A LOT OF COMMUNICATION’ BETWEEN ISIS, MEXICAN CARTELS

“The news for the White House seems all bad. The Chicago Cubs, down 20 games in the National League Central Division standings, stand a better chance of winning the World Series than Nancy Pelosi has of returning as speaker of the House. Harry Reid has a considerably better chance of keeping control of the Senate, but polling averages today show voters in Arkansas, Iowa, North Carolina, Montana, Louisiana, South Dakota and West Virginia inclined to send Republicans to take seats now held by Democrats. Sen. Mitch McConnell only needs six of those seven races to go his way and he can move into Mr. Reid’s office. (Mr. McConnell is ahead in his own race as well). [Snip] Nothing is certain in politics, and Republicans have a well-known gift for retreat and blowing a lead, but the choice of tested candidates like Mr. Sullivan is reassuring to the party. If Mr. Obama wants to keep the Senate in his party’s hands, he should put down his driver and putter and think about how to strengthen the economy and make the world quit laughing at us.” The Obama tee party: A weak president hurts everyone, including the Democrats

Just great. “Sean Haugh, a 53-year-old Libertarian Party nominee in North Carolina, is imperiling Republican Thom Tillis’s chance to defeat incumbent Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) in North Carolina’s Senate race, according to anew poll from Public Policy Polling. Hagan leads Tillis by four points, 42% to 38%, with Haugh capturing 8% of the vote in the poll of 867 likely voters conducted between August 14 and 17. The lead is just outside of the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 3.4%. The poll found Haugh supporters would pick Tillis over Hagan by a 61-19 margin. In a two-way race without Haugh, Hagan’s lead over Tillis drops to one point, 43% to 42%, a statistical dead heat. With Haugh out of the race, Tillis adds four points, Hagan adds one, and undecided increases by three. Unfortunately for Tillis, Haugh will be on the ballot in November, making his battle to victory more difficult. The seat is widely considered a must-win for Republicans if they hope to take control of the Senate. Haugh, a pizza deliveryman by day, is a five-time unsuccessful candidate for other offices with virtually no money or campaign infrastructure.” LIBERTARIAN PIZZA DELIVERYMAN IMPERILS REPUBLICAN CHANCES IN NORTH CAROLINA

Will the Republicans be smart enough to take advantage of this? “The in-depth polling on immigration released by Kellyanne Conway finds little support for Obama’s unilateral amnesty scheme and significant backing for more consistent enforcement. But as important as the law-and-order findings are, what I found most interesting was the depth of support for what Senator Jeff Sessions has described as a “humble and honest populism.” His push for a Republican approach to immigration that would “speak directly to the real and legitimate concerns of millions of hurting Americans whose wages have declined and whose job prospects have grown only bleaker” would appear to have political potential. As Conway’s memo on the poll findings put it, “Immigration is an issue unto itself AND as part of an overall economic message.” [Snip] The flip side is that a more populist GOP immigration message would put the Democrats on the defensive, helping paint them – accurately – as the real party of oligarchy. Obama, after all, is the one consulting with his corporate cronies on ways to hold down Americans’ wages through immigration. Democrats are the ones seeking to import more foreign workers for the Silicon Valley wage-fixing cartel, even as tech firms lay off Americans. Democrats are the ones trying to make sure Michael Bloomberg’s country club doesn’t have to raise wages (“who takes care of the greens and the fairways in your golf course?”). This necessary project of reversing the commonly held stereotypes about the parties is not helped when Paul Ryan says we need even more immigration because someday there might be a labor shortage, or Karl Rove says he doesn’t want his son to have to soil his hands with manual labor, or Haley Barbour justifies mass worker importation because “Colonel Sanders needs these guys.” A sober, ethnically neutral, wage-focused agenda of lower immigration is needed to help the GOP become a party that speaks to people who commute by bus rather than private jet. Conway’s polling shows its enormous appeal. It remains only for the party’s grandees to get the message.” ‘A Humble and Honest Populism’ Would Be a Winner

“Allowing the GOP to be cast as old and white is capitulation to a Manhattan-Beltway media elite meme, and denies the basic truth of the American Founding, stated in the Declaration and restated by Lincoln at Gettysburg. When the GOP takes the Senate in November, it ought to fashion an immigration law and border security overhaul –one fashioned from new, younger voices, armed with new, younger ideas on how to balance security and openness– built around border security and an expansive welcome to those who are already here who are not bad actors. The GOP is actually alive with young voices and ideas on these subjects, and has to escape the media vise that wants to cast it as the party of old white guys. But that is post-November planning which, while urgently needed to be underway privately right now just as judicial confirmation planning needs to be underway right now, has to take a backseat to the politics of right now. [Snip] Does anyone really believe that Al Franken is up to these times?  To these threats?  Or that non-Governor Dayton is superior to GOP nominee Jeff Johnson?  Franken was, is, and remains a joke.  Casting a vote for him is dishonorable, a rejection of America’s role in the world. Seriously, Franken is unserious.  That he has been “quiet” through his six years is an admission that Franken had nothing to say to begin with.  An empty suit. A cipher. A not-very-funny stand-up comic.  Minnesota, and the country, deserves better. Minnesota is a “light blue” state, but it is very winnable.  It elected a great American in Norm Coleman to the Senate in 2002 only to see the seat stolen from him in 2008.  The state elected a fine man and tremendous governor in Tim Pawlenty only to turn the statehouse over to a marginally coherent “legacy” candidate who has always won because of the name he inherited not the ideas he has proposed and pursued –which are, well, just nuts. Minnesota needs top get serious, like the times. [Snip] The fall is upon us and the need for the country to rally to the idea that it doesn’t have to sink into President Obama-led eclipse.  It take energy, money and especially resolve at every level.  I think I see that forming up, and just in time.” Minnesota and 2014

Employee Perks

I want to work at one of these companies! House cleaning, spa services, laundry services, fancy food, custom workspaces, and vacation fun money! Why your employer should clean your house and do your laundry: These ingenious work perks could save you serious cash — and make you more productive

“No one knows, certainly not Mr. Obama. So why, then, say the shooting was “heartbreaking”? It was, if Mike Brown was killed for no reason; it was most certainly not, if he was a thug who attacked a police officer. While he didn’t say the teenager could have been his son, or that police had acted stupidly, he also did not tell those in Ferguson to stand down, to just stop. While he didn’t call the moment “teachable,” he also didn’t say that the rule of law supersedes all, that everyone should step back, stop the violence, and look to the courts to resolve the matter. And there’s a simple reason: Mr. Obama will never “let a good crisis go to waste.” Americans are being beheaded in Iraq, the Middle East is on fire, Vladimir Putin is one-upping the president left and right. The president needs an issue, something divisive, something that fits his strategy of pitting American against American, class against class, and as always, race against race. This is Mr. Obama’s darkest hour. And he’s on the golf course on Martha’s Vineyard, playing the whitest of sports — golf — hoping the whole thing explodes. He just might get his wish.” Obama wants Ferguson to explode

“Those of us who admit that we were not there, and do not know what happened when Michael Brown was shot by a policeman in Ferguson, Mo., seem to be in the minority. We all know what has happened since then — and it has been a complete disgrace by politicians, the media, and mobs of rioters and looters. Despite all the people who act as if they know exactly what happened, nevertheless, when the full facts come out, that can change everything. This is why we have courts of law, instead of relying on the media or mobs. But politics is undermining law. [Snip] Among the other unthinking phrases repeated endlessly is, “He shot an unarmed man.” When does anyone know that someone is unarmed? Unless you frisk him, you don’t know — until, of course, after you have shot him. The only time I ever pointed a firearm at a human being, I had no idea whether he was armed or unarmed. To this day I don’t know whether he was armed or unarmed. Fortunately for both of us, he froze in his tracks. Was I supposed to wait until I made sure he had a gun before I used a gun? Is this some kind of sporting contest? Some critics object when someone with a gun shoots someone who only has a knife. Do those critics know that you are just as dead when you are killed with a knife as you are when you are killed by a gun? If we can’t be bothered to stop and think, instead of repeating pat phrases, don’t expect to live under the rule of law. Do you prefer the rule of the media and/or the mob?”  The Media and the Mob: Those who admit they don’t know exactly what happened in Ferguson seem to be in the minority.

Our Military

I had no idea. Read the whole thing! “It is for this and many other reasons that Julie Oligschlaeger offers her own plea regarding the culture of drugging veterans into oblivion and the need for change now. “Put it in the hands of people who care,” she said. “Take it away from the politicians.” Lieutenant Colonel Bart Billings, a retired Army psychologist, has long championed the use of alternative, non-drug therapies to heal veterans’ mental scars. He blames military psychiatrists for being in bed with pharmaceutical companies, creating a situation where a reported 90 percent of U.S. troops in combat zones have been on some form of psychiatric drug, while on battlefields 180-day supplies of deadly drugs such as Seroquel were being passed around like candy.” Courage Betrayed  Hat tip: Linda Rizzo, Palo Verde Republican Women member

Stories of the Day

“On Tuesday, ISIS militants revealed that Foley was not only in their captivity but that he would be beheaded in order to send a message to Barack Obama. An image of Foley taken before his horrific execution is linked. The video of his beheading will not be shared here. He was 40-years-old. [Snip] The threat ISIS poses to the civilized world is total. For addressing the horrors ISIS is doling out to Iraq’s minorities, Americans will be targeted and retaliated against. Citizens of the United States cannot insulate themselves from this threat by pretending it will go away. This is our fight.” ISIS reportedly beheads American journalist in message to Obama: Stay out of Iraq

“Beheading is not just a warning or a promise; it is a ritual expression of an ideology. That this ideology seeks to annihilate and tyrannize is clear from the jihadists’ beheading method: not a quick, clean blow, but a slow, agonizing sawing motion that keeps the victim alive to experience his own execution. This is not the guillotine: It is torture. And its perpetrators glory in it. Welcome to the Islamic State.” The ISIS Butchers: Beheading for the Cause: They’re following in the footsteps of the Romans, the French revolutionaries, and Mohammed himself.

On President Obama’s break from vacation, between a fundraiser and just before he headed back to the golf course he squeezed in a speech to the American people about Foley’s beheading. “Where was the status update on the ongoing airstrikes against ISIS positions in the north of Iraq which, judging only from press accounts, appear to be relatively effective? Why did the president fail to address rumors that his administration was aware of the threats to Foley’s life prior to his execution, or that unconfirmed reports have suggested that his killer may have been a former Guantanamo detainee? For that matter, why did the president not address the fact that a significant number of westerners are apparently fighting alongside ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and Foley’s executioner may have been one of these western jihadists? It is, again, perfectly understandable for the president to not want to get ahead of the facts of this still developing event, but Obama is set to chair as United Nations Security Council meeting in September which is focused entirely on that very threat. He has yet to publicly address this forthcoming UNSC meeting, and this incident would have been a perfect time to broach that subject. Instead, he leaves it up to his surrogates and the media to inform the public about how this war is being prosecuted. The latest development, breaking just minutes after Obama spoke, is an apparent proposal administration officials are considering to send 300 additional troops to Iraq. Even members of Obama’s own party are now strongly suggesting that the president come to Congress with a request to legally authorize this application of force in Iraq. When does the president plan to speak honestly about the scope of American involvement in the Middle East?” Addressing James Foley’s murder, Obama speaks loudly and leaves the stick at home

“Nevertheless, the revelation that the White House was aware of the threats to Foley’s life and was unable to provide for his safety will prompt administration critics to sharpen their attacks on Obama’s approach to the crisis in the Middle East. In the wake of what may have been a preventable atrocity, some of that criticism will be quite valid.” White House knew ISIS planned to kill James Foley

Will our betters in Washington DC listen now? “American voters says they would prefer President Barack Obama work with Congress rather than use executive action to address the illegal immigration crisis at the border, according to a detailed new opinion poll on immigration, illegal immigrants, and the state of the American worker. The poll, conducted by veteran Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway, also found that Americans disapprove of Obama’s record on immigration. And as one Republican aide on Capitol Hill describes it, the results of the poll are an “utter repudiation” of the Senate’s Gang of 8 immigration bill. The survey of 1,001 likely voters found that 61 percent say they disapprove of the president’s job on immigration, while 32 percent say they approve. That’s worse than his overall job approval rating (57 percent disapprove, 40 percent approve).” Poll: Voters Overwhelmingly Oppose Executive Action On Immigration

Big Government

I will NEVER comply.  “It’s an old Western movie trope. The harassed sheriff needs help against Desperado D. Blackhat and his gang of gunslingers. He goes into the saloon, finds the gambler who was once the most feared crack shot this side of the Pecos, and makes him his deputy. Together, they run Blackhat and his gang out of town. If you thought that type of quick-and-dirty deputizing died with the Wild West, think again. Government is deputizing people all over the country to do its law-enforcement work. But unlike that gambler, they don’t get the chance to say no. Take, for instance, FedEx. The delivery company has been indicted by federal prosecutors for not doing the Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) job for it. The DEA alleges that FedEx knowingly shipped pharmaceuticals for online pharmacies that were based on invalid prescriptions, because it should have known “the principals, company names, shipping addresses and billing addresses that were initially connected to” a network of pharmacies closed down by the DEA in 2003. As a recent Wall Street Journal editorial summarized:

Translation: FedEx employees should have connected the dots. But if it’s so easy, why didn’t the DEA do it? The truth is that unmasking the bad guys would have required an extensive metadata analysis of customer data that is not FedEx’s job.” Deputizing America: Sooner or later, we’ll all work for the State—unless we do something about it

We can only hope! “Well, who could blame them? After Harry Reid used the Senate floor for weeks to demagogue the owners of Koch Industries for their legal and instructive engagement in the political process, he had to be expecting a little pushback. The Kochs don’t do anything small, however, and Politico’s Ken Vogel and Burgess Everett report that they are laying the foundation for a two-year effort to send the Senate Majority Leader into a much-deserved political oblivion: Harry Reid’s reelection is more than two years off, but the Koch brothers’ political machine is already methodically laying the groundwork that will be used to try to take him out. The efforts in recent months have been largely subterranean, but they are unmistakable. A handful of nonprofit groups in the vast political network helmed by allies of the conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch have established or expanded permanent ground operations in Reid’s backyard. Focused on wooing key demographics like Latinos and veterans, they’ve also paid for ads assailing the Senate Democratic leader. … [Snip] So yes, Reid has to be a little nervous about what’s coming, especially since it’s mostly self-inflicted. Don’t be surprised if Reid looks for an opening to retire rather than run again in 2016.” Kochs looking for a little revenge in Nevada?

“This has not been a good week for Democrats running for the Senate. But rather than their problems being focused on the congressional party’s difficult relationship with President Obama or the burden that defending his policies has placed upon Democratic incumbents in red states, this week their problem is on transportation. No, not transportation policy but the fact that shady transactions to pay for their campaign transportation are creating a distraction that is making it harder for the party’s candidates in Kentucky and Louisiana to stay close to their Republican rivals. Today’s unwelcome headline for the president’s party concerns Kentucky senatorial candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes. Grimes has been losing ground recently in her efforts to unseat Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, so the last thing she needed was for Politico to start taking an interest in how she’s paying for her campaign bus. But rather than paying attention to her attacks on McConnell or even her efforts to distance herself from President Obama and his attacks on the coal industry, the publication devoted a major feature today to the question of a possible scandal involving an in-kind contribution from the candidate’s father that may violate campaign finance laws.” Planes, Buses, and Failing Dem Campaigns

“In Texas, the Democrats have just begun to get used to the idea that they need to fight to regain their former dominance in the political scene. From 1874 until 1979, Democrats controlled both the governorship and the lieutenant governorship. It wasn’t until 1995, when George W. Bush was elected Governor, that Republicans gained control of the executive. The stats for theAttorney General’s office look similar; it wasn’t until John Cornyn’s election in 2002 that the AG’s office gained its current conservative reputation. The problem for Democrats is that, as the demographics currently stand, it’s likely to be a long haul before they have a chance to regain control of the executive or the legislature. [Snip] If Democratic groups like Battleground Texas were the only ones seeking the favor and votes of Latinos and other minorities, they might have a chance to exact a quick turnaround; but this simply isn’t the case. Both private sector advocacy groups and high-profile Republican political candidates are spending a great deal of time and resources to get out the vote in neighborhoods and communities that conservatives have never paid a great deal of attention to. At this point in the game, every move by democrats has to be a power play, or else it will be ignored completely. GOTV and base-building isn’t enough; they’re being forced to do whatever they can to turn white voters against not only Perry (who is leaving office in January) but an entire ticket featuring strong conservative candidates. They’re counting on their demonstrated ability to prey upon the emotions of low-information voters, not on any actual evidence showing corruption within Perry’s administration or the Republican Party at large. So far, that strategy seems to be imploding in slow motion.” Texas Dems strategy imploding

“The NYT reported this morning that law-enforcement sources say Wilson suffered anunspecified injury during his altercation with Brown. Fox News’s source is more specific: It was indeed an eye socket fracture, as Jim Hoft claimed yesterday. Why’d it take 11 days for this to leak? No idea, but the conspicuous delay won’t do the cops any favors in getting skeptics to believe it. Nor, of course, will that cellphone video showing Wilson at the scene right after the shooting, in no obvious distress from having reportedly been beaten ‘severely.’” Fox News source: Wilson was “beaten very severely” before shooting Michael Brown

President Obama

America has been melting since Obama became president, but it’s not too late to recover. But where is our next Reagan, Truman or Lincoln? Does our republic have one waiting in the wings? “For nearly 250 years it has been America’s great fortune to have always found just the right leadership in the nick of time. Or perhaps that’s not quite accurate: It has, rather, been our way first to sleepwalk toward crisis and catastrophe, then to rouse ourselves when it is almost too late. As things stand now, by 2017 it will be nearly too late. Who sees a Lincoln, or a Truman, or a Reagan on the horizon? Still, we should not lose hope. We may be foolish, but our enemies, however aggressive and ill-intended, are objectively weak. We may be a nation in deliberate retreat, but at least we are not—at least not yet—in inexorable decline. Two years ago, Obama was considered a foreign-policy success story. Not many people entertain that illusion now; the tide of public opinion, until recently so dull and vociferous in its opposition to “neocons,” is beginning to shift as Americans understand that a policy of inaction also has its price. Americans are once again prepared to hear the case against retreat. What’s needed are the spokesmen, and spokeswomen, who will make it.” The Meltdown

With every one problem Obama attempts to address, there are at least another five lurking around the corner.Liz Peek at the Fiscal Times explains why the Republicans might fail to get voters interested in repealing Obamacare, despite its unpopularity. “What ever happened to Obamacare — the unpopular healthcare bill that was to be the Republicans big weapon as they battled for control of the Senate this fall? For sure, the Affordable Care Act has been pushed to the sidelines by the chaos in Iraq, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the surge in Central American minors across our border, the Veterans Administration scandal, the pestilential virus rampaging across the computers of the federal government, and so much more…” What happened to it was it got buried by Snowden, ISIS, the IRS, Benghazi, Ebola, Syria, Libya, Ferguson, Bergdahl, etc … who can spare a thought for Obamacare? The Obama administration is living proof that the Dense Packstrategy works.  If your problems come fast enough, you start living hour to hour and the newest crisis drives out all thoughts of the last. [Snip] The problem with crediting any vow to avenge Jim Foley is that by this time next week Foley gruesome murder will have been replaced not once, but possibly twice in the news cycle by new scandals. And then it will be “oh that Jim Foley”. In the immortal words of NSC staffer Tommy Vietor: “dude, it (Benghazi) was like two years ago.”  How long till Jim Foley becomes history? Thus, anyone who tries to focus on a particular Obama administration issue will find that it won’t stay put. It’s like being blasted by a Clamore mine. Once you get past counting the 50th wound, you can’t remember where the first one was. Thus, the opponents of Obamacare would be best advised to forget focusing their fire on any individual problem and focus instead on Obama. He’s the common factor in all the dozens and hundreds of crises his administration faces. This is probably happening already whether or not the Republicans intended it. Democratic pollsters argue that people don’t dislike Obamacare for any specific reason they can name, but because they hate Obama. They put this down to bigotry or racism, but although they see the problem they don’t interpret it correctly. There’s a simpler explanation. They’ve realized their problems are not with the individual missiles but with the fact that the Soviets are launching a thousand ICBM strike on North Dakota. They ‘get it’. The Democratic pollsters don’t. The Obama “brand” is seriously damaged. It may be that the president is doing some good in some cases. Or perhaps his style of governance is improving, but that will now be ignored. He will get no credit for it any more. He seems to have stopped being an effective president long ago. That’s good news for America’s enemies and bad news for America.” ” Game Over. Play Again?

Religious Freedom

“New York farmers who host birthday parties and other events must pay a $13,000 fine because they refused to host a gay wedding. The couple, Cynthia and Robert Gifford, have hosted gay wedding receptions in the past. But because weddings are conducted on the first floor of their house, Cynthia Gifford refused to host a gay wedding ceremony of two lesbians because of her Christian faith. A judge ruled that the GIfford private residence isn’t so private after all.” NY Farm fined for refusing to host gay wedding

“Government should not create special legal privileges based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Instead, government should protect the rights of Americans and the associations they form to act in the public square in accordance with their beliefs. The Giffords’ case illustrates the growing conflict between religious liberty rights and laws that grant special privileges based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In a nation founded on limited government and religious freedom, government should not attempt to coerce any citizen, association, or business into celebrating same-sex relationships.” Government to Farmers: Host Same-Sex Wedding or Pay a $13,000 Fine

Rick Perry

Democrats playing hard ball, all the time. From the comments: This is why I can’t stand freaking democrats! The mafia is more honorable! Emphasis mine.” “There’s nothing wrong with being a party activist, of course. But Rho Chalmers was a very partisan Democrat activist from sharply partisan Travis County at the same time she was weighing whether to indict Gov. Rick Perry, Republican. That stinks.

The grand jury was selected in April of 2014 and its proceedings did not conclude until it returned two indictments of Perry last week. While grand jurors are not generally prohibited from engaging in political activity, Chalmers apparent giddiness at attending an event for a grand jury witness calls into question her ability to objectively scrutinize his testimony. Watson had testified before Chalmers and the rest of her colleagues on the grand jury just one month before Chalmers attended his event. Knowingly seeking out participation in an event featuring a grand jury witness while grand jury proceedings were ongoing also seems highly questionable.

Indeed. And then, after Chalmers helped indict a governor she clearly opposes politically, she participated in a story to counter the governor’s “spin.” That “spin” is otherwise known as his defense, which is something that the grand jury never heard from the prosecutor or the likes of Kirk Watson. Chalmers has indicated support for Democrat Wendy Davis’ run for governor as well, on her social media. That’s over at the Mediatrackers site. The indictment of Gov. Perry is a partisan operation from top to bottom. It’s backfiring on the Democrats now. A friend observed that it’s making Perry, who has been governor for 14 years and picked up his share of critics along the way, about as popular leaving office as he was when he first arrived in it. But Rho Chalmers shows why the legal jeopardy to him is real.” Surprise! Perry Grand Juror Is Also a Partisan Democrat Activist

“Life isn’t fair, and neither are high-dollar Republican donors – the kind of people a prospective candidate needs to woo in order to mount an even remotely competitive presidential campaign. Perry has been effectively positioning himself as a more conservative but still electable alternative to more centrist candidates like Chris Christie and Jeb Bush in his pitch to donors, but the notoriously skittish GOP donor base will be nervous about backing a candidate with optics as bad as those the Texas governor will earn today. Maybe Perry can turn this around and turn even his mugshot into an advantage, as he has so effortlessly with the indictment that precipitated it. But that remains to be seen. When the Republican base’s protective instinct has worn off, that mugshot will still be there. Make no mistake, this is a serious blow to Perry’s viability as a national candidate.” Rick Perry turns himself in to authorities: Does he lose in the end?

Stories of the Day

The refounding of America by the progressive Left began many, many years ago, and it will continue unless we stop it! “What is the “it” they don’t get? The Progressive dogmas that Pelosi has internalized and Marino rejects. A hundred years ago, the first group of progressives concluded that this country needed to change in a big way. They argued explicitly for a refounding of the United States on the grounds that the only absolute in political life is that absolutes are material and economic rather than moral in nature. Translating theory into practice, those thinkers and political storm troopers on the Right Side of History have increased the power of the state so as to produce the greatest amount of material pleasure and moral-ideational relief for society–to leave the populace, as Machiavelli put it, both “satisfied” and “stupefied.” Convincing the American people to abandon (or at least qualify) their deep, longstanding regard for the founders was no easy task for the Progressives. It required making them over in far less heroic terms: to frame the Founding as a grand enticement, if not quite a crime, and the founders as crafty oligarchs, if not quite criminals. [Snip] The political challenge of our day is the revival of that spirit among the American people–and those who champion this task, like those they champion, are anything but “insignificant.” The Rise of Progressive Oligarchy: Reviving the ‘vigilant and manly spirit’ of American republicanism.

The AP Style Guide be damned: For the media, it’s all about getting across their Leftist propaganda points. “The most recent copy of the Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual I own is dated 1998; I scanned the relevant page and highlighted the text in question. I also own a copy from my college days with a 1977 copyright on it. They both have the same guidelines for referring to someone as a “youth:”

youth Applicable to boys and girls from age 13 until 18th birthday. Use man or woman for individuals 18 and older.” Yes, AP Violated Its Style Guide to Refer to Michael Brown, 18, as a ‘Youth’

“Elia Kazan’s classic A Face in the Crowd is a good primer on Barack Obama’s rise and fall. Lonesome Rhodes arises out of nowhere in the 1957 film, romancing the nation as a phony populist who serially spins yarns in the most folksy ways — confident that he should never be held to account. Kazan’s point (in the film Rhodes is a patsy for conservative business interests) is that the “folks” are fickle and prefer to be charmed rather than informed and told the truth. Rhodes’s new first name, Lonesome, resonates in the film in a way that Barack does now. Finally, an open mic captures Rhodes’s true disdain for the people he champions, and his career crashes. So what is collapsing the presidency of the once mellifluous Obama? It is not the IRS, AP, VA, or NSA scandals. Nor did the nation especially fault him for Benghazi or the complete collapse of U.S. foreign policy, from failed reset to a Middle East afire. In each case, he either blamed Bush or denied there was a smidgeon of wrongdoing on his part. Certainly, the stampede at the border, as disastrous as it was, did not ipso facto sink Obama’s ratings. Ditto the embarrassing Bergdahl deal, in which we traded a likely deserter for five Islamist kingpins. Was it the ISIS ascendance that is leading to genocide and a nascent caliphate? Not in and of itself. We could go on, but you get the picture that it was all of the above that finally became too much, as Americans turned Obama off because they were all lied out. In all of these scandals a charismatic Barack wheeled out the teleprompter, smiled, dropped his g’s, soared with “make no mistake about it” and “let me perfectly clear,” and then, like Lonesome Rhodes, told the “folks” things that could not be true or at least were the exact opposite of what he himself had earlier asserted. [Snip] In A Face in the Crowd, the charismatic Andy Griffith character could more or less get anything he wished by saying anything he wanted, largely because he said it mellifluously and in cracker-barrel fashion of an us-versus-them populism. His admirers knew that they were being lied to, but also knew that Lonesome knew that they did not mind. Lonesome had contempt for hoi polloi, largely because of his own easy ability to manipulate them for whatever particular careerist cause he embraced. So Obama has disdain for those who passed out at his lectures, who put up the Greek columns at his speeches, who came up with his Latin mottoes, and who gushed at his teleprompted eloquence. He knows that we know he is not telling the truth, but likewise he knows that we don’t care all that much — at least until now. The secret to Lonesome’s success was to hide his contempt for those he lied to. When he is caught ridiculing his clueless listeners, he finally crashes and burns — sort of like Barack Obama serially vacationing with the 1% whom he so publicly scorns, or golfing in the aristocratic fashion of those who, he assures us, did not build their businesses. Lonesome did not end up well, and neither will the presidency of Barack Obama.” Our ‘Face in the Crowd’

“Let me begin by acknowledging that this inspirational title is lifted from a tweet by screen actor James Woods. And now I will explicate his tweet. Every sentient human being whose brain isn’t stuffed with ideological fairy dust can see that Obama is behind every major scandal of his administration from Benghazi to the I.R.S. disgrace. How can one know this? Because the culprits haven’t been fired. Moreover, if they are serial liars like Susan Rice, they’ve actually been promoted to posts where their loyalty to the criminal-in-chief can do America and its citizens even more damage, if that is possible. A president faced with a scandal created by underlings behind his back would be naturally furious at their misbehavior, and want heads to roll. This didn’t happen in any of these scandals because their point of origin was the White House itself. Promoting the culprits is a way of keeping them quiet.” The Hell That is the Obama White House

“For his first term and re-election, ideological differences dominated the debate surrounding President Obama. But while these partisan debates continue to swirl around the president, in the past year it has become clear that Obama is not only to the left of most Americans, he is completely out of his depth as President. In short, his lack of plain, managerial competency, and that of his administration, has manifested itself with a vengeance. His recent interview with The Economist brings into stark relief Obama’s fundamental lack of understanding of the art of governing and how America’s federal system operates. In this interview, Obama expounds on his frustration that business keeps lobbying for special treatment. Is he serious? Can he really be that obtuse? It is a mind-boggling comment. Everyone lobbies for special favors in Washington — it’s the town’s main industry. Business, labor, environmentalists, cities, states — you name the interest and I can guarantee they have their hand out.” More Than Incompetent, Obama Simply Does Not Understand What It Means To Be President

“What’s most disturbing about Obama’s outburst, however, is what it says about his willingness, with two and one half years left in his term, to recognize his foreign policy mistakes and endeavor to correct them. Even as he has been forced to reverse his Iraq decision, the president appears stubbornly determined to reject the conclusion that has become conventional wisdom outside the White House: that his retreat in Iraq and passivity in Syria did much to create the ugly monster the United States now faces in the Islamic State, an organization that is more powerful, more vicious and more ambitious than al-Qaeda prior to Sept, 11, 2001.” To fix foreign policy mistakes, President Obama must first admit them

“Mr. Obama’s detachment from his own party–his lack of personal relationships with Democrats on Capitol Hill–is hardly news to anyone. What is news is that Democrats are willing to give public voice to their complaints. They want their grievances known. But it’s not just, or even mainly, Mr. Obama’s aloofness that seems to trouble them; it is, as Harry Reid’s chief of staff indicates, his lack of competence that is really bothering them. Let’s just put it this way: If an aloof President Obama has 60 percent approval ratings (instead of 40 percent)–if the Affordable Care Act was wildly popular, the economy was surging, and the world was tranquil–you wouldn’t see front-page stories in the New York Times highlighting Democrats complaining about him. The fact that Democratic members of Congress are eager to distance themselves from the Obama presidency is an indication of its disrepair. But this is the state of affairs in the Obama second term; and Democrats may as well accept that things are only going to get worse.” Democrats Air Frustrations with Obama

Can we all now please agree that it’s not about doing what’s best for American citizens, but doing what’s best to place the Left in permanent power? “President Barack Obama’s attention to the illegal immigration crisis, which could lead him to issue executive orders early next week to delay deportations and grant work permits to as many as 6 million migrants, has soured many of his core voters: African-Americans.
Many blacks, who twice voted for Obama in record numbers to elect him — and keep him — as the nation’s first African-American president, are angry that he has neglected the problems facing inner cities while working on the border crisis.”  Obama’s Attention to Border Crisis Outrages African-Americans

President Obama in cahoots with big business to screw those of us that are already here, and working. “Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) today accused executives at some of the world’s largest corporation of “scheming with the White House” to circumvent the law during their closed-door meeting with Pres. Obama today. “We have now arrived at a crisis point in American politics. Politico reports that the White House is meeting with the world’s largest corporations to discuss how executive actions on immigration could benefit them financially. The Administration has solicited ‘a list of asks for the tech sector’ and ‘provisions for low-skilled workers for industries, like construction’-including green cards and work authorizations-in order to ‘get them on board’ with the President’s planned executive amnesty. One lobbyist crowed that ‘nothing was off the table.’ A tech industry lobbyist said that if they get they want from the President, ‘we will support him 100 percent.'” Sen. Sessions says the CEOs are “scheming with the White House” to flout both Congress and the will of the people: “The same group of CEOs who helped write the Senate’s Gang of Eight immigration bill in secret is now scheming with the White House to extract by executive fiat what was denied to them by the American people and Congress.” If these companies so desperately needed illegal alien labor, they wouldn’t be laying off American workers by the thousands, Sen. Sessions notes: ‘Even while they demand more foreign workers, these companies are laying off current employees in droves. Cisco, which Politico reports met with White House aides to advocate for more foreign workers, just last week announced its intent to lay off 6,000 employees. Last month, Microsoft declared it would lay off 18,000 workers. Overall, mass layoffs in the tech industry are up 68% from the prior year. As for the construction industry, there are seven unemployed workers for every one job opening. According to a recent study released by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, construction workers hit by the recession have seen their wages fall by 23 percent. The increases in foreign workers demanded by corporate lobbyists would be in addition to the Administration’s plan to implement amnesty by executive fiat, providing work permits to 5-6 million illegal immigrants and visa overstays who will be able to take any job in any industry, public or private.’” Sen. Sessions: CEOs ‘Scheming with WH to Extract by Executive Fiat’ Amnesty Congress Denied

According to a Politico report, senior White House aides earlier this month met with “more than a dozen business groups and company officials to discuss potential immigration policy changes they could make.” According to the outlet, “Oracle, Cisco, Fwd.US, Microsoft, Accenture, Compete America, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce” were represented at the meeting. Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg’s has poured in millions of dollars to Democrats and Republicans to push for amnesty legislation, specifically an increase in the number of their coveted high-tech guest-worker visas. Cisco recently slashed another 6,000 jobs after pushing for amnesty legislation. Microsoft announced it would lay off 18,000 American workers a week after its former CEO Bill Gates called for an unlimited number of certain guest-worker visas in a New York Times op-ed. And the Chamber of Commerce has vowed to spend $50 million for amnesty legislation and more guest-worker visas.” REPORT: AFTER WH MEETS WITH BIG BIZ, OBAMA MAY USE EXEC ACTIONS TO INCREASE GUEST-WORKER VISAS

Climate Change

California is no stranger to severe drought. “Much of California, and other areas in the West, are enduring a severe drought. In February, President Obama decreed that the drought is the product of man-made “climate change.” This is a good example of a proposition that should be self-evident, but is generally ignored: you can’t talk intelligently about climate change unless you know something about climate history. Which, not surprisingly, Barack Obama doesn’t. The reality is that California is no stranger to drought, and hasn’t been for millennia.” IS “CLIMATE CHANGE” CAUSING THE WESTERN DROUGHT?

The Democrats

“Who are President Obama and the Democrats most afraid of? That’s easy to see: Just find the Republicans they target with phony scandals. Like Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell. Or New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Or Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. Or, now, Texas Gov. Rick Perry.” Obama, Democrats target GOP foes with phony scandals

Conservative college students come out of college stronger because they have to fight for their ideas. “What happens when a leftist student confronts arguments he or she disagrees with? After all, they sometimes hear views that contradict their own. The problem is that they have always been rewarded for facile rejoinders, the equivalent of one-move chess games.  There is a ceremony that goes with this, something one of my colleagues calls “The Women’s Studies Nod.” When someone makes a ridiculously extreme, empirically unfounded but ideologically correct argument, everyone else must nod vigorously.  Not just a, “Yes, that’s correct,” nod, but “Yes, you are correct, you are one of us, we are one spirit and one great collective shared mind” nod. What if someone withholds the Nod?   Since the children of the left have never actually had to play a full chess game of argument, they need a response. Their responses are two: “You are an idiot; no one important believes that,” or “You are evil; no good person could possibly believe that.” Our higher education system fails leftist students.

Click on over to watch. Full and crazy liberalness (is “liberalness a word”) on display. “As mentioned yesterday, Texas Democrats are offering us the splendid spectacle of their idea of public integrity, Rosemary Lehmberg, but Montana Democrats, in selecting a replacement for the disgraced plagiarist John Walsh, may have topped Texas by tapping State Rep. Amanda Curtis as his replacement on the ballot.  It seems Rep. Curtis likes to share her thoughts up close and personal on YouTube on a regular basis, and let’s just say Montana Democrats have found someone who will fit in well on the Senate dais next to MENSA member Barbara Boxer (about 1:50 long, but worth it):” THIS IS THE BEST MONTANA DEMS CAN COME UP WITH??

“In this video, Curtis mocks gun ownership, religion, family values, concern over the $17.6 trillion national debt, and self-identifies as an anarchist. Montana most certainly has a historic blue streak, but Curtis is a candidate so openly left-wing that she would have trouble winning a statewide race – much less the Democratic Party’s nomination — in even traditionally blue states. There is every reason to believe that Montana was not going to be competitive for Democrats this cycle, but a state with two Democratic senators and a Democratic governor is a state Republicans have to fight for. The GOP will still have to campaign hard in Montana, but Rep. Steve Daines, the Republican Party’s nominee for Senate, will no doubt have a much easier time of 2014 than it appeared he would early on in this cycle.” Montana Democrats have made a huge mistake

“The Gateway Pundit can now confirm from two local St. Louis sources that police Officer Darren Wilson suffered facial fractures during his confrontation with deceased 18 year-old Michael Brown. Officer Wilson clearly feared for his life during the incident that led to the shooting death of Brown. This was after Michael Brown and his accomplice Dorian Johnson robbed a local Ferguson convenience store.” BREAKING REPORT: Officer Darren Wilson Suffered “Orbital Blowout Fracture to Eye Socket” During Mike Brown Attack

“ISIS is all over the Ferguson protests on Twitter, encouraging jihadists to head on over and do some recruiting. And it seems like the message has gotten through, as a t-shirt spray painted with “ISIS Here” was flashed on CNN Monday.” BREAKING: “ISIS HERE” Islamic Flag Flashed During Ferguson CNN Report (Video)

Janson Riley speaking the REAL TRUTH TO POWER (in case you don’t know, Jason Riley is a black man). “We don’t have all the evidence and I’m hesitant to try and litigate this in the press, but there’s also this false narrative being pushed out there by folks like Michael Eric Dyson and [Al] Sharpton and the rest of the hustlers is that black men live in fear of being shot by cops in these neighborhoods. That too is nonsense. I know something about growing up black and male in the inner city and it’s not that hard to avoid getting shot by a cop. They pull you over, you answer their questions, you are on your way. The real difficulty is not getting shot by other black people if you are a young black man in these neighborhoods and again that is something we need to talk more about. Cops are not the problem. Cops are not producing these black bodies in the morgues every weekend in Chicago, in New York and Detroit and so forth. That’s not cops. Those other black people shooting black people.” A WORD FROM JASON RILEY

Emphasis mine. “But, you say, this was a white-on-black crime. An o-fay cop offed a brother. (Never mind that brothers can butcher brothers like it’s going out of style, this pig had white-skin privilege.)  Well, yes, and we don’t yet know the circumstances, but even accepting the narrative of, say, the Huffington Post that the cop was the reincarnation ofBull Connor and that the “youth” was a “gentle giant” on the way to a contract with PBS as the next Mr. Rogers, the event is basically a charade.  Everyone knows we’ve seen it before and everyone knows we’ll see it again.  In fact, many parties don’t want it to go away.  The beat must go on.  It has to go on or their very personalities will disintegrate.  And I will tell you why — what caused it. The Great Society.  There, I’ve said it.  The Great Society, which I voted for and supported from the bottom of my heart, is the villain behind Ferguson.  Ferguson is the Great Society writ large because the Great Society convinced, and then reassured, black people that they were victims, taught them that being a victim and playing a victim was the way to go always and forever.  And then it repeated the point ad infinitum from its debut in 1964 until now — a conveniently easy to compute fifty years — as it all became a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Great Society and similar policies screwed black people to the wall. It was racist to the core without knowing it.  Nobody used the N-word.  In fact, it was forbidden, unless you were Dr. Dre or somebody.  But it did its job without the word and did it better for being in disguise.  Those misbegotten kids running around Ferguson high on reefer and wasting their lives screaming at cops are the product of all this.  Stop it already.  No one has said this better than Jason Riley, author of Please Stop Helping Us. Listen to Jason if you want to end Fergusons.” The Real Villain of Ferguson

“Finally, there’s the argument that the militarized police were inciting the crowd. This wasn’t entirely implausible, although it seemed unlikely because it should be possible for lawful, well-intentioned people to restrain themselves from throwing things at cops whose uniforms and vehicles they don’t like. Sure enough, after a night of calm in the wake of the “demilitarization” of the police response and the insertion of Captain Ron Johnson, the lawlessness started right up again.” The Grossly Exaggerated Militarization-of-Police Critique of Ferguson

Green Energy

Why does the Left hate people, and birds?  Horrifying bird slaughter at solar power plant

“California’s massive Ivanpah solar power plant can produce enough electricity for 140,000 households — but the environmental cost is nothing less than an avian slaughter. The plant’s 350,000 mirrors bounce sizzling sunlight to the tops of three 40-story boiler towers, heating steam for turbine electricity generators. Temperatures near the towers can reach up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, heat certainly sufficient to fry a fowl. Workers at the state-of-the-art solar plant in the Mojave Desert have a name for birds that fly through the plant’s concentrated sun rays — ‘streamers,’ for the smoke plume that comes from birds that ignite in midair,” the Associated Press reports this week. That’s a common occurrence, the AP continues; federal investigators saw a bird burn roughly every two minutes. Ivanpah owner BrightSource estimates that “about a thousand” die each year, and one environmental group says the plant kills up to 28,000 birds each year. As the plant prepared to begin operations, workers found the winged corpses of “a peregrine falcon, a grebe, two hawks, four nighthawks, and a variety of warblers and sparrows,” the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year. Those statistics haven’t curbed the enthusiasm of the Obama administration for the solar-power plant, which granted Ivanpah a $1.6 billion federal loan guarantee. And when the solar farm hosted its grand opening earlier this year, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz called Ivanpah “a shining example of how America is becoming a world leader in solar energy,” adding that “this project shows that building a clean-energy economy creates jobs, curbs greenhouse gas emissions, and fosters American innovation.” Dead-Bird ‘Steamers’ at a California Solar Plant: Reaching temps of 1,000ºF, this Obama-favored plant incinerates up to 28,000 birds annually.

Her Highness, Queen Hillary Clinton

Click on over to hear the epic rant! “The release of details of Hillary Clinton’s contract demands for speaking at UNLV, with incredible perks suitable for an empress, is deeply damaging her prospects for winning the presidency. The woman who complained about being “dead broke” when leaving the White House has become a complete diva. The information is sinking in, helping people understand who, exactly, this woman is. It is unappealing to a country that despises those who put on airs, who consider themselves better than others. See for example, John Ralston, Las Vegas Sun reporter (called by that paper “Nevada’s leading political observer”) and TV editorialist seen on stations in Las Vegas, Reno, and Elko. Ralston unleashed an epic political rant. Daniel Harper of The Weekly Standardprovides the video and a transcription:” Hillary unmasked: the consequences mount

“It’s not just the Clintons, either. It’s the Bushes, the Cheneys, and the Kennedys (still), and probably the Obamas later on. It’s not their fault for running; it’s our fault for falling back to the millenia-old notion that certain families have some sort of precedence when it comes to wielding power, whether that comes from being anointed by God to the nobility or from today’s market-oriented ideas of celebrity and branding strength. A constitutional republic should have more sense, and more ambition for self-governance, than to fall back into lazy patterns of reaching for the familiar rather than seeking out those who may have new and better approaches. Who should be most embarrassed? We should.” Video: “Who gets to hold her crown while she speaks?”

She’s smart enough to read the writing on the wall. “In 1966, Nixon’s campaigning helped Republicans gain five Senate and those 47 House seats. Clinton is apparently afraid she can’t match that record.” Hillary’s Campaign-Trail Absence: Clinton isn’t stumping for her party this election season. Here’s why.

The Left

Yes, the Left is really calling for this… “Europe really is determined to party like it’s 1939, aren’t they? In France, shops of Jewish merchants are having the windows smashed. Meanwhile,’s UK site is exploring another topic that was much in vogue in post-Weimar Germany right around the same time as kristallnacht. “It’s time to consider restricting human breeding.” Wired Magazine calls for Birth Panels

What happens when/if the Left gets its way? “Liberals have two problems with the nation state. Their first beef is that the nation state encourages aggressive “nationalism.” Look at the wars of the 20th century, they say. If it weren’t for nationalism, no wars. Their second problem is that the nation state and its idea that we are all Americans spoils their identity politics. They want their helpless victims hived off from the mass of citizens. Their politics just doesn’t work if everyone in the U.S. is a happy Yank. That’s why liberals have to hyphenate everyone.  [Snip] But there is something worse. The evil genius of liberals is to conjure up internal enemies. First they picked on the rich and the robber barons when they were leading the working class, and now they pick on racists, sexists, homophobes when they are leading African Americans, upper-class women, and upper-class gays. They think they are smart, and can control the enmities they spawn, but what if they aren’t as smart as they think? If the liberals end up by destroying the nation state, what will take its place? That is what Richard Fernandez is trying to figure out. I’d rather not think about that. I am a middle-class American and I want to fight for the nation state, for I reckon that a world without the nation state won’t work for people like me. You see, a nation state with limited government permits ordinary people to go about their business, finding jobs, creating businesses, sending their kids to college, and saving for their retirement — as responsible individuals. But liberals like President Obama don’t like that. They want a world with fairness and equality, defined and ruled by people like them.” Let’s Fight for the Nation State

The Left must remove all of our beliefs about the good that is America.“Tribalism is trending.  The End of History world is over. All of a sudden it matters again whether you’re Yazidi, Kurdish, Sunni, Shi’ite, Druze or Christian. It apparently matters whether you’re Russian or non-Russian, at least in Eastern Europe. And as Tolu Ongulesi in Nigeria notes, tribalism is alive and well in Africa, especially now that Ebola is running rampant. Perhaps there is the answer to the rhetorical question in yesterday’s post.

That the current system is in flux is no longer in doubt. What everyone wants to know is where the attractor is. “In dynamical systems, an attractor is a set of physical properties toward which a system tends to evolve.” Where is the world going? Who is going to lead it?

History may be evolving away from the Westphalian State, with its unitary national culture, flags and traditions and moving towards affinity groups whose allegiance is primarily to themselves;  which only form temporary alliances based on expedience in competition with other affinity groups. The evidence is suggestive. Nobody is just an “American” any more. Anyone who insists on the plain identifier must be a secret bigot. You are a [modifier][-][American]. In fact, Forbes noted that “the number of Americans renouncing United States citizenship or terminating long-term residency is on a record pace.” And why not? The unadorned term “American” is being drained of meaning; what value there is lies in the prefix, not in the suffix.Man Without a Country

National Security

“With the weakest national security team since World War II, it is no wonder that both our foreign and national security policies lack coherence and direction. The Administration’s faculty-lounge logic that, in the 21st century, “diplomacy” will substitute for military solutions to international crisis, overlooks or chooses to ignore a key factor:  recognized military power that provides the essential underpinnings to successful diplomacy.  It is called “Peace through Strength.” How did we get to the rudderless position we are in today?  Clearly, a series of policy mistakes have been made.  It should be remembered that it was President Carter’s misguided policies that gave rise to Islamic resurgence by undercutting our key ally, the Shah of Iran by fostering the return of the Islamic zealot Ayatollah Khomeini with his 7th century mentality.  Furthermore, much like President Obama today, he oversaw a deliberate drawdown of our military forces and capabilities.  Regrettably, each successive administration, be it Democrat or Republican, has also contributed to the chaotic situation we now face in the Middle East.  First, by essentially ignoring the 34 years of acts of war by Iran against the United States.  These have included the takeover of our embassy in Iran; the bombing of our embassy and US Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon without responding; their material and training support to the 9/11 hi-jackers, as well as a host of other acts of war which have caused the loss of life of thousands of American military personnel and civilians.” National Security Policy Adrift

President Obama

Let us pray that in never, that because Obama is teetering, that the people a smart enough to take the Senate away from him.Barack Obama’s presidency isn’t just shrinking, it’s losing support among its most critical point — its base. Less than two years ago, Barack Obama became the first Democratic president since FDR to win re-election with a popular-vote majority. Since then, his support has dropped dramatically — not just overall, but among important constituent groups. Comparing 2012 exit poll results with an Aug. 8 McClatchy-Marist nationwide poll shows how far Mr. Obama has fallen with various segments of the population. In 2012, Mr. Obama won among women 55 percent to 44 percent. Today, his approval rating among women is 41 percent, with 51 percent disapproving. Among political moderates, Mr. Obama has gone from a 56 percent approval and 41 percent disapproval in 2012 to 42 percent approval and 45 percent disapproval today. Among Hispanics, the president has gone from a 71 percent and 21 percent winning margin in 2012 to a 34 percent approval and 46 percent disapproval split. Using the same comparison, Mr. Obama has seen the Midwest, those making less than $50,000, 30-to-49-year-olds, and both college graduates and noncollege graduates flip against him. Pivotal independent voters, already having voted against Mr. Obama 45 percent and 50 percent in 2012, now register just a 35 percent approval and 55 percent disapproval rating.” Obama’s teetering presidency

Rick Perry

“What’s good for Democrat is always bad for a Republican. “This narrative posits that Perry used Travis County DA Rosemary Lehmberg’s drunk driving arrest as an excuse to gut the PIU just as it was circling around Perry appointees who had allegedly engaged in corrupt grants through CPRIT. This narrative accuses Perry of doing what New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo actually did, more or less, though in Cuomo’s case he appointed the commission that started circling around his administration. Cuomo shut it down before its investigations could get too close. According to the Austin American-Statesman — which is to Texas media what the New York Times is to the national media (i.e. unabashedly liberal) — the Democrats’ narrative does not stand up to scrutiny at all.” Austin American-Statesman Destroys Democrats’ Narrative on the Perry Indictment

“First, let’s not mince words about the egregious nature of the indictment and what it means about how out-of-control prosecutors can derail democracy. It should be remembered that what happened here was that a Democratic prosecutor who had disgraced her office with a drunk driving violation and abusive behavior toward police refused to resign. Perry used a threat of a veto of her budget to try to force that resignation. The special prosecutor in the case alleges that using that threat — something that was obviously in the service of the public good — was an illegal abuse of power. That is absurd and you have to be a hardcore Democratic partisan to think that it is even remotely reasonable for a prosecutor to treat a public policy dispute — especially one in which the governor was clearly on the side of ethics — as a criminal matter.” Rick Perry and Our Dysfunctional Politics

“It is bad for democracy when parties that have lost elections try to overturn the results in the courts. That’s what the Republicans have done, by impeaching Bill Clinton, by installing the loser of the 2000 election as president with the help of Republican Supreme Court justices, and by suing and threatening to impeach Barack Obama. Are Democrats now going to try to use corruption charges, including far-fetched ones, to depose Republican governors they don’t like? In politics, bad results can be overturned by ordinary people at the ballot box rather than appellate judges.  That’s why, whether you like or detest a particular politician, criminalizing politics is a bad idea. For all of these reasons, Democrats nationwide have reason to be upset with Travis County DA Rosemary Lehmberg for inadvertently helping Rick Perry, Chris Christie, Scott Walker and the GOP brand in general.  As Talleyrand observed of Napoleon’s execution of the Duc d’Enghien:  ‘It is worse than a crime; it is a mistake.’” Rick Perry’s indictment is bad for Democrats: A Texas perspective

“Austin is a deeply, and perhaps irrecoverably, corrupt place. From the impeachment of University of Texas regent Wallace Hall in retaliation for his role in exposing political favoritism in law-school admissions to prosecutors’ throwing around felonies for partisan political ends, the malicious and dishonest deployment of official force against political rivals in the Texas capital is a reminder of just how illiberal liberals truly are. Austin’s hippie-dippy ethic is just New Age window dressing on old-fashioned, bare-knuckled, power-mad politics: Papa Doc Duvalier in Birkenstocks.” Keep Austin Corrupt?

Just Because the Mainstream Press Isn’t Telling You About It, Doesn’t Mean You Shouldn’t Know About It: News You Can Use for August 18!

Stories of the Weekend

From the comments, emphasis mine:When I retired from the Army in May I left my letter from him [President Obama] thanking me for my service under my chair. Every other officer in the ceremony did the same. I can’t picture him being at my funeral, and all the aggravation that come with presidential security to boot. My wife and kids don’t need to hear him say “I, me, my” and talk about his “accomplishments”. Guess who was missing at funeral of highest ranking officer killed in combat since Vietnam War

Please read this! The erasing of America’s founding within our schools has begun in earnest. Emphasis mine. “Today, the history of George Washington’s leadership has been erased in the new Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. History test/curriculum, taking effect in the fall of 2014.  The College Board, the organization that publishes the Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT) and AP tests, has also decided to completely blot out Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, among others.  In this newly revised course, Gen. Washington merits one fleeting mention in one sentence, in reference to his Farewell Address. “American history without George Washington?  That is like the Beatles without Paul McCartney or the Super Bowl without Vince Lombardi.  A former AP U.S. history teacher, Larry Krieger, provides insightful analysis of these sweeping changes here.  The rebuttal of Trevor Parker, senior vice president for AP programs at the College Board, can be found here, and Mr. Krieger’s defense here.  As an aside, it should be noted that the College Board’s new president, David Coleman, is also one of the major architects of Common Core. The 98-page College Board AP U.S. History curriculum framework can be read here.  Mr. Krieger’s analysis makes clear that this deletion was by design and not by accident.  The new College Board U.S. history defines the USA as a racist, genocidal, imperialist nation.  Their whole point is that America is bad so of course they leave America’s heroes out.” College Board Erases the Founding Fathers. Protect the Spirit of ’76.

Hugh Hewitt and Karl Rove, on Obama, emphasis mine:Hugh Hewitt: Now I think the short form that Bush won the war, and Obama lost the peace is absolutely true, and it’s going to be undeniable by history. Yesterday, Joe Scarborough said on this show that President Obama’s looking at 30 years of memoirs about his incompetence coming from insiders. Do you agree with that, Karl? Karl Rove: I don’t think it’s going to be a pleasant retirement for him. First of all, I think he’s going to, I think he’s going to have an exaggerated sense of what he’s going to be able to personally materially receive in his retirement. And you know, I think it’s also going to be very unpleasant to hear the verdict of history unroll. I mean, we already saw it. When your secretary of State, when the person who has served you in the top position in your cabinet for four years goes out and says this was a failure responsible for today, for what we see today, and I’ll be tougher on Iranian sanctions, and I’ll be a stronger friend of Israel, and oh, incidentally, while I’m at it, let me just tell you great nations need organizing principles, and don’t do stupid stuff is not an organizing principle. It shows how the arc of history is going to go in a very bad way for Barack Obama.” Karl Rove On President Obama –And President Bush’s Silence About President Obama

This fact cannot be repeated enough, because if it is true, we have more than two years to go with no one leading the free world. Is there any wonder our country is falling apart and the world is burning? “The only person counting down the days until Obama’s exit from office more than Sean Hannity is Barack Obama himself.”  Scarborough: Senior Democratic Senators, Close Political Allies Tell Me That Obama Is Just “Checked Out,” Wants to be an Ex-President

“Yes, when the recriminations begin flowing when the administration finally packs their bags, don’t expect a ringing chorus of hosannas — except about their departure. It won’t take long for those books to emerge, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them emerge before the end of the term. In fact, based on how her summer has gone, Hillary Clinton may be kicking herself for not grasping that opportunity with Hard Choices.” Scarborough: Obama’s “checked out … doesn’t give a damn”

“Obama never was very engaged with the work of government, although much of his career has been spent in government. As president, even his signature “accomplishment” early in his administration, Obamacare, was designed and pushed mostly by others (Pelosi, for example), who did the heavy lifting for him. Obama is used to adulation and feeds off it, and when the adulation stops he’s really not very interested in going on with the activity. Campaigning and elections are tailor-made for a personality such as his. They feature speeches and promises and debates (words) rather than the need to work with others and accomplish something concrete. The main activity is travel—constant movement—and speaking before adoring crowds. [Snip] So, no surprise. Obama hasn’t checked out because he never really, completely, checked in.” Obama: checked out

“What could possibility explain this attitude? It may be that Mr. Obama was drawn to the job not for the right reasons but because he viewed the presidency as a new mountain to climb, a prize to win, as a way to feed his unusually large ego (even for a politician). It may also be that Mr. Obama, with his presidency crumbling, is like a petulant child who wants to pick up his marbles and leave. He was fine serving as president when he was adored and well liked; now that things are going south he appears to have emotionally “checked out,” to use Scarborough’s phrase. The problem with this is that Mr. Obama is disengaging (a) after having done extraordinary damage to America and (b) at a moment when the world is convulsing because of the void left by Obama’s (and therefore America’s) diffidence and passivity. An increasingly insouciant commander-in-chief is not what’s needed at this particular time, given the multiplying threats and increasing disorder in the world. It’s very much beginning to look at if Barack Obama saw the presidency as primarily a way to satisfy his narcissism. What’s happened instead is the presidency is breaking him, even as he is breaking the nation.” The Presidency is Breaking Obama Even As Obama Has Broken the Nation

Democrat Party

At least some one is paying attention, and is not afraid to express his dismay. “I’m a Democrat. I’ve been a Democrat my entire life. I used to utter those two sentences with pride and would shout them from the highest rooftops. Now, I’m almost embarrassed to say those words. I almost can’t articulate my political affiliation in public (or on the radio) without immediately offering an apology and an explanation. How did I get here?” Joe Piscopo’s confessions of a disillusioned Democrat: The party of the working class has sold out to fat cats

“He’s disillusioned by what the Democratic Party has become without having any particular enthusiasm for the Republican Party. He’s rooting for the Republicans to win because they’re an alternative to a disastrous party, not because he likes what they stand for. He joins a lot of Democrats turned independent voters who might have become Reagan Democrats in 2012 if there had been a Reagan running. But the Republican Party still has no real leadership and it hasn’t been able to articulate much in the way of a positive vision. Instead it spends much of its time playing defense or offense, games that the wider public doesn’t care much about. But the open space is there.” The New Reagan Democrats and Joe Piscopo’s Farewell to the Dems

Last week I talked to a Jewish friend who goes back to England every year to visit family. She lives in the states now, but is from England. She told me that she has never been more scared to be Jewish in Europe, and thinks she now knows what it must have felt like to be Jewish just before WWII. “A  friend who is conservative and  Jewish asks a question: “Given  Obama’s hostile treatment of  Israel, isn’t it time for Jews to have their Ronald Reagan moment?” By that, he means when the Gipper said, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The party left me.” Without doubt, the party under Barack Obama has left those Jews who view Israel’s security as threatened. Obama recently told a New York Times interviewer, ‘Because Israel is so capable militarily, I don’t worry about Israel’s survival.’” Why Obama is driving Jews from the Democratic party

Toxicity! “The political landscape, though, is getting even more toxic for Democrats. Several months ago, Democrats looked assured of a net gain of at least 2-3 governors. Today, however, Republicans look more likely to add to their majority of governors, winning a net gain of 1 or 2 states.” DEMS TRY TO BREAK GOP WAVE IN STATES

The Left’s war on people living comfortably continues. “Here in America and elsewhere around the world, Greens continue to war against any energy other than the “renewable” kind, wind and solar, that is more costly and next to useless. Only coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear keeps the modern and developing world functioning and growing. The most publicized aspect is Obama’s “War on Coal” and, thanks to the Environmental Protection Agency, it has been successful; responsible for shutting down several hundred coal-fired plants by issuing costly regulations based on the utterly false claim that carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced to save the Earth from “global warming.” The EPA is the government’s ultimate enemy of energy, though the Department of the Interior and other elements of the government participate in limiting access to our vast energy reserves and energy use nationwide. By government edict, the incandescent light bulb has been banned. How insane is that?” Greens are the Enemies of Energy

Why does President Obama and the Left hate people? In order to comply with the new Obama era EPA regs, American Electric Power, which supplies a major portion of the electricity used on the east coast, will be closing almost one quarter of their coal fired plants between now and next June. This is because they were economically unable to come into compliance with the new regulations in the impossibly short window of opportunity offered by the EPA. This is going to reduce the total surge capacity available for some of our most densely populated areas just when we may get hit with weather related demand spikes beyond anyone’s control. Having the power go out in the summer when you’re trying to run the air conditioning is bad enough. Losing heating when the temperatures head below zero for weeks on end is a recipe for disaster.” Video: Is the post-EPA regs power grid ready for a truly hard winter?

“If Brown’s arms were up when he was shot, then Johnson’s claim seems difficult to reconcile with this evidence, although Brown’s arms could have come down between shots, too. The lack of gunpowder suggests that Brown was at least some distance from Officer Darren Wilson when he was shot, though, which intensifies the question about the use of lethal force, given that Brown was unarmed at the time. However, at least in Baden’s autopsy — performed on behalf of Brown’s family — Wilson didn’t shoot Brown as he fled, as Johnson claimed. That claim played a large part in stoking the rage that led to the riots. Perhaps the Department of Justice thinks it will find something more than Baden did in his autopsy, but Baden’s report and its provenance will be difficult to refute. Maybe the National Guard can calm the situation long enough for everyone to catch their breath and catch up to the facts in the case.” Nixon calls out National Guard to Ferguson

“We’ve been told for days now that that the reason there was rioting in Ferguson is because protesters were “provoked” by militarized police. I agree with some of my colleagues that cops should look like cops (see Kevin’s excellent piece here), and it is deeply unsettling to see police atop armored vehicles training weapons on protesters. On the other hand, there is no justification to throw projectiles at police, no matter what kind of uniforms they are wearing or what kind of vehicles they have, nor is there any justification for destroying or stealing other people’s property. Now, we’ve had a real world test of the “provocation” thesis. The highway patrol came in with a much softer and friendlier posture and it seemed to work Thursday night in reducing tensions, but it didn’t last night. Shamefully, the cops evidently stood by while looters destroyed and stole things. We’ve heard an awful lot about the function of police in our society the last few days. Well, how about this as a function? Protect the property of innocent people. [Snip] What did Tanya Littleton did to deserve getting looted, and getting abandoned by the people who are supposed to protect her? [Snip] Of course, most protesters in Ferguson are peaceful and some of them, as noted in the report above, tried to protect Ferguson Market, to their great credit. But we shouldn’t have to rely on peaceful protesters to try to restrain looters. The first obligation of the police is to preserve public order. In Ferguson, they aren’t doing it. First, they gave in to the mob on the Internet and cable TV, and last night they gave in to the mob on the streets. This isn’t justice and it isn’t peace.”  Police Tactic in Ferguson: Betray Local Business Owners

Juvenile. “An online friend “Miss Marple” notes the similarities between the thuggery in Ferguson, Missouri and the depredations of the Middle East’s jihadi wild packs:

I read a book by the historian Barbara Tuchman [A Distant Mirror. The Calmitous 14th Century] which theorized that the Hundred Years War was caused by a culture that was adolescent, because so many older people had died during the Black Plague.

All of the nobles and rulers at that time were in their late teens and had not much guidance from older, calmer heads.

That idea has remained with me ever since I read the book, and when I see crowds of angry young men, whether in the Middle East of urban America, I think about it. Adolescent cultures react emotionally, are disproportionately concerned with machismo and being respected, act on impulse, and have no long-term goals.

I think there’s something to that. It is not, however, the only connection between the two places and events. Obama and his policies — on foreign affairs hopelessly naive and on domestic matters fashioned only for personal political advantage — are also intimately connected with this havoc.” Ferguson, Missouri, to Gaza, Damascus and Sinjar

Why are feminists so weak? “For some people, oppression, imaginary or not, lurks everywhere they turn—and that’s the way they like it. Women are fed up, Zimmerman complains, because they’ve “been listening to rape jokes and wife-beating jokes, and smiling and gritting our teeth since forever.” With whom is this lady hanging out? If someone told me a rape or a wife-beating joke, I’d tell that person to knock it off. I’d probably stop hanging out with them. I certainly wouldn’t smile or grit my teeth, or expect someone else to solve such a minor problem. But, then again, I’m not a modern feminist. We should all be stronger than that.” Can Feminists Do Anything On Their Own? Feminists insist they need men, if only to hate them.

Foreign Policy

Obama finally wakes up to the fact that those of us on the right already knew: he isn’t lord over the world, but that’s not what we were lead to believe at the beginning of his reign. Emphasis mine. “WASHINGTON — In this summer of global tumult, the debate in Washington essentially boils down to two opposite positions: It is allPresident Obama’s fault, according to his critics; no, it is not, according to his supporters, because these are events beyond his control. Americans often think of their president as an all-powerful figure who can command the tides of history — and presidents have encouraged this image over the years because the perception itself can be a form of power. But as his critics have made the case that Mr. Obama’s mistakes have fueled the turmoil in places like Syria, Iraq and Ukraine, the president has increasingly argued that his power to shape these seismic forces is actually limited. “Apparently,” he said in frustration the other day, “people have forgotten that America, as the most powerful country on earth, still does not control everything around the world.” While as a statement of fact Mr. Obama’s assertion may be self-evident, it was seen by adversaries as a cop-out and even by more sympathetic analysts as a revealing moment for a president whiplashed by international instability.” As World Boils, Fingers Point Obama’s Way

“Under a barrage of criticism for how he’s mishandled American foreign policy, President Obama is once again feeling sorry for himself. “Apparently,” he said at a press conference earlier this month, “people have forgotten that America, as the most powerful country on earth, still does not control everything around the world.” About this answer, I’d say several things, starting with this one: When he ran for president, he spoke as if America did control everything in the world and therefore that everything that went wrong in the world was the fault of his predecessor. In other words, Mr. Obama spoke in exactly the terms he now complains his critics do. Having been humiliated by events, President Obama is now telling us that the world is a mighty complicated place – who knew? — and American power is so darn limited. In other words: Don’t blame me. I’m only the president. What on earth can I do? Second, it wasn’t Mr. Obama’s critics, but Mr. Obama himself, who set the soaring expectations of what would be achieved if he were elected president. It is Mr. Obama, not others, who claimed his candidacy would “ring out across this land as a hymn that will heal this nation, repair this world, make this time different than all the rest.” (Just in case the point was lost on us, Mr. Obama ended by saying, “Yes we can. Yes we can. Yes we can.”)” Obama Still Feeling Sorry for Himself

“Historians will have the rest of the century to unravel the mess that is the Barack Obama presidency. While they can explore these years of foreign policy disaster and domestic malaise at leisure, the rest of us have 29 more months to see just how awful things can get before he slides off to a lucrative retirement. But those who want to start the post-mortem on this historic presidency would do well to read Jackson Diehl’smost recent Washington Postcolumn in which he identifies Obama’s hubris as the key element in his undoing. As our Pete Wehner wrote earlier today, the president’s reactions to what even Chuck Hagel, his less-than-brilliant secretary of defense, has rightly called a world that is “exploding all over” by blaming it all on forces that he is powerless to control. As Pete correctly pointed out, no one is arguing that the president of the United States is all-powerful and has the capacity to fix everything in the world that is out of order. But the problem is not so much the steep odds against which the administration is currently struggling, as its utter incapacity to look honestly at the mistakes it has made in the past five and half years and to come to the conclusion that sometimes you’ve got to change course in order to avoid catastrophes.” Obama’s Hubris is His Undoing

Hillary Clinton

All hail our very own Queen Hillary! “The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Laura Myers managed to get a look at the highly confidential contract that Ms. Hillary requires for her overpriced speaking engagements secured through the offices of the Harry Walker Agency. Myers reports:

[Hillary Clinton] will get $225,000 to speak at the annual dinner [of the UNLV Foundation]. The size of Hillary Clinton’s fee has come under fire from critics who question the large expense in an era when students are hard-pressed to cover tuition and leave school saddled with massive debt.

But Clinton’s $225,000 is something of a cut-rate. Documents obtained by the newspaper show that she initially asked for $300,000 and reveal that she insists on controlling every detail of the private event, large and small, to ensure that she will be the center of attention.

“It is agreed that Speaker will be the only person on the stage during her remarks,” according to the May 13 contract the Harry Walker Agency signed for Clinton’s keynote address at the Bellagio.

According to her standard speaking contract, Clinton will remain at the event no longer than 90 minutes; will pose for no more than 50 photos with no more than 100 people; and won’t allow any press coverage or video- or audio-taping of her speech.” RULES OF THE GAME, HILLARY STYLE

Fed up. “I don’t think Sullivan believes the IRS and has ordered the agency to justify policies that, on the surface, sound suspicious. And he’s obviously not satisfied that the IRS has been completely forthcoming about the missing emails. Judge Sullivan is now the central figure in the IRS scandal. He’s got a bulldog grip on the agency’s leg and won’t let go until he gets some answers.” Federal judge orders IRS to explain lost Lerner emails

Nightmarish possibilities here… “U.S. counterterrorism officials have dramatically ramped up their warnings about the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), concluding that the well-armed group is expanding its ambitions outside the Middle East and may be planning terror attacks against western Europe — and even the U.S. homeland. ISIL’s conquest of vast swaths of Iraqi territory this spring and summer netted it a “significant” arsenal of U.S. weapons from two Iraqi military bases, including hundreds of tanks, heavily armored Humvees, assault rifles, and rocket-propelled grenade launchers, officials say. One U.S official tells Yahoo News ISIL is now considered “the most potent military force” of any terrorist group in the world.” ISIL could pose threat to US, Europe, officials say: The group is now considered “the most potent military force” of any terrorist outfit in the world

The Left

“It’s not enough to correctly identify what’s wrong. If we don’t have a positive recipe on how to fix it, we’ll lose to those who have a proposal, however abysmal.” “I was reading the blog of Daniel Greenfield, undoubtedly a great writer and an acute analyst of what is wrong in today’s world. But, the more I was reading, the more I felt a sense of dissatisfaction, as you may have when drinking doesn’t quench your thirst but paradoxically increases it. Then I discovered what it was. There was something missing: a conclusion. We — the counterjihadists, the “Islamophobes”, the conservatives, the “right wing” — have many excellent thinkers and commentators (of whom Greenfield is an example) who are good in the pars destruens, the critical, negative part, of our arguments; but not enough who develop a pars construens, the constructive part that builds the positive alternative to what we are criticising. This dearth of a firm propositive aspect in our positions is common to all Western countries. The reason, I dare say, is simple. There is among us a widespread fear or unease in proposing a kind of society espousing ideas and values (some of which from the past) that have been ruthlessly, thoroughly mauled and massacred by the Left. We are, probably without realizing, the first victims of Leftist indoctrination. We may reject those ideas rationally, but deep down, emotionally, we have doubts. The Left’s are the views we grew up with, they permeated our culture, were ideologically dominant when we were teenagers and young adults. Our favourite bands endorsed them and were selling them with their records and their lives: sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. At university, both professors and students were full of them; who thought differently was a pariah.” What’s the Alternative to the Left’s Program?

“American politics is dominated by an enduring myth—that Democrats are the party of the common man; the voiceless, the powerless, the poor. That if you care about what happens to the least among us, you will cast your vote in the Democratic column. But the reality is this: the vast majority of voiceless, powerless and poor people are concentrated in Detroit, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, and America’s other large urban centers. All of them are run by Democrats and have been for 50 to 100 years. On the Democrats’ watch, these cities have become the equivalent of holding cells for the poor and minorities. Everything that’s wrong with America’s cities that can be affected by policy, Democrats are responsible for. There are poor to be helped, but Democrats have buried them deeper in poverty and powerlessness. There are minorities who seek opportunities, but Democrats have kept them second-class citizens. Democrats have been the problem rather than the solution.” The New Shame of the Cities

“A question for the Reverend Jackson: Who has been running the show in Newark, in Chicago, in Detroit, and in Los Angeles for a great long while now? The answer is: People who see the world in much the same way as does the Reverend Jackson, who take the same view of government, who support the same policies, and who suffer from the same biases. This is not intended to be a cheap partisan shot. The Democratic party institutionally certainly has its defects, the chronicle of which could fill several unreadable volumes, but the more important and more fundamental question here is one of philosophy and policy. Newark, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles — and Philadelphia, Cleveland, and a dozen or more other cities — have a great deal in common: They are the places in which the progressive vision of government has reached its fullest expressions. They are the hopeless reality that results from wishful thinking.” Who Lost the Cities? There is more wrong with Ferguson than the Brown case.

Single payer failing everywhere it has been implemented. “The recent Veterans Affairs scandal, following the disastrous ObamaCare rollout, was a red flag about problems of nationalized health. Now concrete evidence is coming in from other countries that have tried it for decades. The reality is that the key goals for health-care reform—reducing spending, expanding access to affordable coverage, preserving personal choice and portability of coverage, promoting competition in insurance markets, and maintaining excellence in medicine—do not require government to directly provide insurance or health care.” Where ObamaCare Is Going: The government single-payer model that liberals aspire to for the U.S. is increasingly in trouble around the world.

President Obama

Click on over to see our happy, dancing president. “A picture of President Obama dancing at a party in Martha’s Vineyard at the exact moment that police and protestors were confronting each other in Ferguson, MO has been deleted from the photographer’s Instagram account. The photographer, Elizabeth Cecil, removed the photos without explanation. But the Washington Times has a pretty good reason. Twitter exploded about the photos with many making the comment that it was inappropriate for the president to be dancing while they were rioting in Ferguson. Viral pic of Obama dancing while Ferguson burned removed by photographer

Unprecedented. “President Barack Obama is no friend of press freedom, says a New York Times reporter who may be sent to jail for refusing to reveal a source. “A lot of people still think this is some kind of game or signal or spin,” reporter James Risen told his own paper in a profile about his plight published Saturday. “They don’t want to believe that Obama wants to crack down on the press and whistle-blowers. But he does. He’s the greatest enemy to press freedom in a generation.” NYTimes Reporter: Obama ‘Greatest Enemy To Press Freedom In A Generation’ [VIDEO]

Rick Perry

For the Democrats, it is war.  Rick Perry indicted

“On April 13, 2013, Rosemary Lehmberg was pulled over for dangerous driving. She was found with an open bottle of vodka in the car, which is against the law, and her blood-alcohol level was .239 percent. (The legal limit is .08 percent. As a rule of thumb, at .1 you’re happy, at .2 you’re drunk, at .3 you’re passed out, and at .4 you’re dead. In other words, to use the technical term, she was blotto.) Taken to the police station, she was abusive and uncooperative to the point of being put in handcuffs and leg irons. She pled guilty to DWI and was sentenced to 45 days in jail and a $4000 fine. She served 20 days. Her license was suspended for 180 days. This sort of thing happens every night in every city in the country. What made this unusual was that Lehmberg is the district attorney of Travis County, Texas, which is the county where Austin, the state capital, is located. That gives the district attorney of Travis County a lot of power to investigate public corruption. Indeed she heads the state’s Public Corruption unit. Governor Rick Perry, not unreasonably, thought she had disgraced herself and should resign her office. She refused. To force her out, he threatened to veto the appropriation for the Public Corruption unit and, when she stilled refused, vetoed it. For this the governor was indicted by a special prosecutor on two felony counts that, in theory, could send him to jail for the rest of his life. He is charged with, “misus[ing] government property, services, personnel, or any other thing of value belonging to the government that has come into the public servant’s custody or possession by virtue of the public servant’s office or employment.”  According to the special prosecutor, threatening a veto is a “misuse.” Since a veto is neither a person nor a thing, it’s hard to see how this applies.” The Criminalization of Politics

Geesh. Her blood alcohol level was .23. “Rick Perry thought her to be a disgrace, and wanted her to resign. She didn’t. So he took the next step and threatened to veto funding for her office. In response, a grand jury handed down an abuse of power indictment for coercive use of a veto late this afternoon. So the woman who was belligerent and intoxicated stays, Rick Perry is the bad guy and needs to go. Right. Got it.” Before You Pass Judgment On Rick Perry…

He’s my new hero. “Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Saturday that the indictment against him was an “outrageous” abuse of power and vowed to fight it. Texas Gov. Rick Perry speaks during a news conference on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, in Austin, Texas. at the indictment against him was an “outrageous” abuse of power and vowed to fight it. “It is outrageous that some would use partisan political theatrics to rip away at the very fabric of our state’s constitution,” Perry said at a news conference. ‘This indictment amounts to nothing more than abuse of power and I cannot and I will not allow that to happen.’” Texas Gov. Rick Perry Says He’ll ‘Fight’ His ‘Outrageous’ Indictment, Calls It a ‘Farce of a Prosecution’

“The Dems are launching spoiling attacks at all the GOP prospects for 2016. That’s because they see it as war. The GOP, as Kurt Schlichter points out, needs to see things the same way if it hopes to win. Some people seem to get it — see below — but if the GOP were serious it would be going after Dem prospects — Joaquin Castro, Andrew Cuomo, Elizabeth Warren, etc. — the same way.” PUNCHING BACK TWICE AS HARD: Perry Gives Defiant Statement on Indictment.

“The old saying goes that a grand jury could indict a ham sandwich.  In reality, it’s worse. Forget innocuous sandwiches, with or without Russian dressing.  In Texas, at least in Austin’s Travis County, you can indict the state’s governor, Rick Perry, for doing the job any intelligent citizen would want him to do — trying to get rid of an absolutely atrocious public official.” The Star Chamber Comes to Texas

Appearing in the New Yorker magazine and written by someone who isn’t exactly a fan of conservatives. “They say a prosecutor could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich, and this always seemed like hyperbole, until Friday night a Texas grand jury announced an indictment of governor Rick Perry. The “crime” for which Perry faces a sentence of 5 to 99 years in prison is vetoing funding for a state agency. The conventions of reporting —  which treat the fact of an indictment as the primary news, and its merit as a secondary analytic question —  make it difficult for people reading the news to grasp just how farfetched this indictment is.” This Indictment Of Rick Perry Is Unbelievably Ridiculous

“Here’s a pleasant surprise. Former Obama chief political advisor David Alexrod is calling the indictment of Texas Governor Rick Perry “sketchy.”I don’t think there are too many politicians in America who don’t know that the Perry indictment is politically motivated. There will be few Democrats willing to admit it, and fewer still who come out and say it. [Snip] When integrity and honor become so politicized that banana republic type prosecutions of a political. foe are allowed, you know we have reached a very dark place in America.” Axelrod calls Perry indictment ‘sketchy’

“Democrats appear to be distancing themselves from an indictment presented against Texas Gov. Rick Perry relating to public corruption charges. Republicans are gleefully framing the charges as the result of political payback from a prideful district attorney who the governor had attempted to oust following her drunken driving arrest. The press is casting Perry’s predicament merely as a stain on his record while he prepares to mount another presidential bid. What few are discussing are the merits of the charges the governor is facing. That sounds familiar. “We don’t settle political differences with indictments in this country,” Perry told reporters on Saturday. “It is outrageous that someone would use political theatrics to rip away at the very fabric of our state’s constitution.” [Snip] It is a familiar pattern. When the substance of the charges leveled against Chris Christie and Scott Walker began to fizzle, the press also shifted the narrative from coverage of a significant breach of the public trust to speculation about how the charges would affect their political futures. In this case, the shift in tone in the press occurred with lightning speed, which is perhaps indicative of just how shallow the charges Perry is facing truly are.” Sounds familiar: Press treats Perry’s indictment as a political scandal

“I have to think that the indictment of Governor Perry will be thrown out before it goes to trial. The indictment of Perry befits a banana republic, and while we’re not too sure about the United States of America, Texas is not there yet.” THE PERRY INDICTMENT: A TRAVESTY OF A MOCKERY
