Stories of the Day
Research confirms what those of us who align with the Tea Party already know. “A startling new political science study concludes that corporate interests and mega wealthy individuals control U.S. policy to such a degree that “the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.” [Snip] Noted American University Historian Allan J. Lichtman, who highlighted the piece in a Tuesday article published in The Hill, calls Gilens and Page’s research “shattering” and says their scholarship “should be a loud wake-up call to the vast majority of Americans who are bypassed by their government.” [Snip] The study’s findings align with recent trends, where corporate elites have aggressively pursued pro-amnesty policies despite the fact that, according to the most recent Reuters poll, 70% of Americans believe illegal immigrants “threaten traditional U.S. beliefs and customs,” and 63% believe “immigrants place a burden on the economy.” The solution, say the scholars, is a reinvigorated and engaged electorate. “If policymaking is dominated by powerful business organizations and a small number of affluent Americans, then America’s claims to being a democratic society are seriously threatened,” conclude Gilens and Page.” STUDY: YOU HAVE ‘NEAR-ZERO’ IMPACT ON U.S. POLICY
This certainly isn’t comforting. Emphasis mine. “The Obama administration has lifted longtime restrictions on Libyans attending flight schools in the United States and training here in nuclear science, according to a final amendment of the ban recently approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Less than two years after the deadly terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya that killed four Americans, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is poised to sign off on an amendment reversing the ban, which was enacted following a wave or terrorist attacks in 1980s and prevents Libyans from studying these sensitive trades in the United States.” Obama Lifts Ban on Libyans Attending U.S. Flight Schools, Training In Nuke Science
The press not that into reporting stories that involve wrong doing by Democrats, as usual. Emphasis mine. “With control of the Senate hanging in the balance this fall, any story about any incumbent’s troubles is news — if he’s a Republican. This is no different from 2010 and 2012, when the press couldn’t get enough of Mourdock (Indiana), Akin (Missouri), and O’Donnell (Delaware). The stories were endless. On August 7, after a lengthy scandal involving, first, plagiarism and then the bizarre excuse of post-traumatic stress disorder as the cause, Senator John Walsh of Montana resigned in disgrace, possibly adding an all-important victory to the GOP this fall. Network coverage? Nada. I could continue but I won’t. We conclude only as we can conclude: This is deliberate. The national news media are doing the bidding of the Democratic party.” Hide ‘D,’ Showcase ‘R:’ It’s the media’s unwritten rule for covering political scandals.
What the heck happened? We were told that if we elected Obama for president, the oceans would recede and the the planet start to heal… “In other words, the gloom goes beyond wealth, gender, race, region, age and ideology. This fractious nation is united by one thing: lost faith in the United States.” Americans’ optimism is dying
Do you believe in miracles of God? Here’s more proof! “Here’s the thing: If Hamas would have succeeded, it would have been the worst terrorist attack in Israel’s history. And whether you believe in God or not, this sure felt like a “miracle” to the hundreds of people who would have been killed, if it weren’t for a perfectly timed gust of wind…” A Rocket Was About to Cause the Worst Terror Attack in Israel’s History, But a ‘Miracle’ Happened
Have pigs learned to fly? “A who’s who of news organizations, as well as the American Civil Liberties Union, have sided with the conservative National Review and the free market Competitive Enterprise Institute in a libel lawsuit brought against them by climate scientist Michael Mann. Mann contends that the magazine and the think tank both libeled him by publishing articles alleging that he has intentionally manipulated climate data. Both defendants are seeking to have the case dismissed under a statute that prevents nuisance lawsuits intended to silence critics. The matter is currently before the D.C. Superior Court.” ACLU, news organizations back National Review, think tank in climate libel case
As I am learning, never trust anything a politician or a candidate for political office says. In politics it’s all lying, all the time. “It was an applause line during almost every campaign address made by President Obama in 2012: “I promised to end the war in Iraq, and I did.” Now, he’s backing off. [Snip] What was a popular line in 2012 is now something Obama would have people believe he couldn’t control.” Bombs Over Erbil: Obama Took Credit for Iraq Troop Withdrawal Before Ducking Responsibility
My comment is the same as the one I made above. “We all remember. How could we not? He’d been saying it every farking day for three years —until this summer, when suddenly it became something he’d done reluctantly, forced on the U.S. by an obstinate Iraqi parliament and a short-sighted, foolhardy Nouri al-Maliki. Any theories as to what changed? What could have happened in Iraq to make The One, who got reelected by reminding voters that he brought the boys home, wish that maybe he still had a few boys left in the field over there? A dandy little edit here by the Free Beacon, via Ace. I know I’ve linked it before but the piece you want to read as accompaniment is Iraq hawk turned dove Peter Beinart lamenting all the ways Obama screwed up post-Bush American policy in the country. O wants you to believe at the end of the video here that he pushed hard to keep a residual American force inside Iraq for counterterrorism (i.e. counter-ISIS) operations but it’s simply not true. He didn’t push hard for it; when Maliki initially resisted his demand that U.S. troops be granted immunity from prosecution in Iraqi courts, O took that as his cue to pull everyone out. And that wasn’t the only time he indulged Maliki’s dumbest impulses. The story of the U.S. vis-a-vis Iraq after 2009, writes Beinart, is a story of disinterest and disengagement.” Video: Remember when Obama took credit for pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq instead of blaming Maliki for it?
We’re becoming sitting ducks. “In other words, ISIS is more capable in every way than the terrorists that hit America so hard on 9/11. Pinprick strikes weren’t enough to stop a much weaker Osama bin Laden. They will not be enough to stop a much stronger Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.” The ISIS Threat to the United States, in Six Sentences
The Left sees no evil. It’s just all wrong-headedness that can be negotiated with. “We may not understand evil, but we’ve learned that negotiating with it is impossible. The very nature of evil precludes negotiations, and it can only be met with great strength rather than weakness. Elizabeth Warren doesn’[Snip] But Warren’s words seem positively nonsensical. Perhaps the most curious thing about the quote is that she says there has to be a negotiated settlement in Iraq, whether it’s the US or the Iraqi government participating in the negotiations. But why this must be the case is left unexplained. Does she really think that the ISIS lion is going to lie down with the lamb? Far from being obligatory, is it even within the realm of possibility? A group like ISIS can only be destroyed or it will destroy the good in its path. It cannot be reasoned with.t even understand that much. Or perhaps she understands it and is just pretending not to, because she knows that’s an atittude (sic) that pleases her base.” ISIS and Understanding Evil
“Cheney added that President Obama’s past statements that ISIS was “JV” showed that the president is “probably not reading his intelligence, or we’ve got a bigger problem in terms of the quality of the intelligence he is receiving.” He also stated, ‘to suggest that these guys [ISIS] are just involved in local conflicts, I can’t believe he’s listening to the briefings that I would expect he’s received from the intelligence community, and come out with a statement like that. It shows the depths of his, I guess, his lack of knowledge.’” CHENEY: OBAMA PROBABLY NOT READING HIS INTELLIGENCE REPORTS
Obama and the Left never wanted to work with the Republicans. “If you want just 100 percent and the notion is that the winner really does take all—all the spoils—sooner or later that government is going to break down.” – President Obama to New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, August 8, 2014. “Elections have consequences, and at the end of the day, I won.” – President Obama to House Republican Whip Eric Cantor, January 23, 2009. If only the current-day President Obama could travel back in time and warn his newly elected self about the dangers of pursuing a governing agenda that excludes and alienates the opposition. [Snip] Liberal critics say that Obama didn’t really have a negotiating partner—the same complaint conservatives make in reverse—and that compromising with Republicans in 2009 and 2010 on the budget and health care wouldn’t have translated into any significant Republican support. Perhaps that’s true, but we’ll never know because he didn’t try it. It turns out Americans didn’t elect Obama in 2008 because they were desperate for universal health care. They elected him because of his aspirational appeal, which included a promise to be “post-partisan,” to be pragmatic, and to deliver on his promise to “fix” our broken political system. But the very first decision he made— in hindsight, perhaps the most consequential of his presidency—only served to bust our political system further. It’s been more or less downhill ever since.” Too Bad Obama Didn’t Follow His Own Advice
Mr. Secretary, please tell us something we don’t already know! “Fresh off a trip to India and Australia, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel addressed a group of Marines in San Diego, California Tuesday, and may have delivered a line that will show up in Republican campaign ads this election cycle. After updating the troops on some issues in the Pacific region and the Middle East, Hagel took questions from some of the Marines and gave a stark assessment of the global security situation: ‘The world is exploding all over.’” Defense Secretary: ‘The World is Exploding All Over’
“Clueless Chuck and his boss are leading us down a road that is going to get really ugly, very quickly. “We may have a handful of advisers in plenty of countries, but we’ve retreated from Iraq, we’ve retreated from Libya, we’re retreating from Afghanistan, and we refused to become engaged in Syria even in the “unbelievably small” way that Obama originally contemplated. Even Hillary Clinton, who touted the pivot to the Pacific, acknowledges the problem. In a world that’s “exploding,” how can one defend severe cuts to defense spending? This, I take it, was the thrust of the Marine’s question to Chuck Hagel. Unless one believes that the U.S. will not experience fallout from the explosions, the cuts are indefensible. And if we are exempt from fallout, why pivot to Asia? Why not pivot home? Clueless Chuck Hagel isn’t the only one who has no answer. “THE WORLD IS EXPLODING” BUT CHUCK HAGEL IS ON THE CASE
“President Obama claims that he’s determined not to do “stupid [stuff].” It would be nice if, in addition, he abjured “half-assed [stuff].” Combating ISIS with a few pinprick airstrikes and a small number of advisers is half-assed. Fox News reported this morning that U.S. military commanders have compared our limited action against ISIS to ‘whac-a-mole.’” HAGEL SENDS 130 ADVISERS TO DEAL WITH “THE MOST BRUTAL, BARBARIC FORCES WE’VE EVER SEEN”
The president’s silence speaks volumes. “It’s starting to seem as if the Obama White House operates on a time delay. In the case of Iraq’s religious minorities, the results have been deadly. On June 10, the barbaric extremists called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) captured the city of Mosul. By mid-July, they issued an edict to the Christians who remained to “convert, leave or be killed.”The White House said nothing. Beginning on July 22, Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., took to the House floor six times to plead for attention from the Obama administration as a genocide threatened Iraq. Not a word from the president.” Kirsten Powers: Obama’s inattention to Iraqi Christians
Are we fighting a losing battle? “Sessions, in a statement exclusively provided to Breitbart News, berated House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, calling on Reid to allow a vote on the House-passed measure that would block President Obama’s attempts to continue or expand the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) executive amnesty to millions more illegal aliens. “Recent developments suggest the President’s planned executive amnesty could be increasingly imminent and broad in scope,” Sessions said, citing how Pelosi has called on the President to give the “broadest possible” executive amnesty to perhaps as many as ten million illegal aliens.” EXCLUSIVE–SESSIONS: MELT DOWN SENATE’S PHONE LINES, FORCE REID TO ALLOW VOTE ON EXECUTIVE AMNESTY
I don’t think it matters what the people want. Our “betters” are going to do what they want to do, no matter what we say. “America is developing an anti-immigration consensus. That wasn’t supposed to happen in the nation of immigrants. Media outlets are shaking their heads over the poll numbers and correctly tying them to the border crisis. What they aren’t saying though is that the border crisis was calculatedly set off by Obama’s illegal alien DREAM amnesty. And as with ObamaCare, the radical agenda backfired. The border crisis was supposed to start the amnesty machine. It was the sort of confrontational activism popular with Chicago community organizers who know that if you can’t get what you want, you dump a bunch of people on the doorstep of whatever agency you want to blackmail which creates an instant social services mess so that the politicians will have no choice but to “solve the problem” on your terms.” The Amnesty Radicals’ Big Mistake
“Luis Gutierrez has taken to threatening Republicans with the prospect of two million new Latino voters racing to the polls in November, but the reality is different. It’s older white voters who turn out en masse for midterms; Latino turnout tends to drop off, which is why Brendan Nyhan of The Upshot calls O’s impending decision to issue his mass amnesty before November instead of after “inexplicable.” It’s really not inexplicable — he seems convinced that his base will stay home if he doesn’t do something flashy on immigration, the risk of a backlash notwithstanding. But the higher activists’ expectations get, the more of a bind it puts O in. Conceivably, he could legalize a million illegals and infuriate both the right (which opposes executive amnesty on principle) and the left (which wants the broadest executive amnesty possible). Good luck, champ.” Go big: Immigration activists beg Obama to legalize eight million illegals or more
We really ARE in the best of hands. “According to Breitbart, “a leaked intelligence analysis from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reveals the exact numbers of illegal immigrants entering and attempting to enter the U.S. from more than 75 different countries.” It reports that 28 “individuals from Pakistan were caught attempting to sneak into the U.S. this year alone, with another 211 individuals either turning themselves in or being caught at official ports of entry.” Texas Gov. Rick Perry says that the number of apprehended illegal aliens who come from countries with “substantial terrorist ties” is at a record high, countries such as Yemen, Somalia and Saudi Arabia. On top of this, individuals from nations currently suffering from the world’s largest Ebola outbreak have been caught attempting to sneak into the U.S. Deroy Murdock’s article titled “The Southern Border: Our Welcome Mat for Terrorists,” for National Review Online (April 25, 2013), reports that “Somalia’s Ahmed Muhammed Dhakane told authorities in 2011 that he earned up to $75,000 per day smuggling East Africans into America. His clients included three al-Shabaab terrorists. As the House report states: ‘Dhakane cautioned that each of these individuals is ready to die for their cause and would fight against the United States if the jihad moved from overseas to the U.S. mainland.’” Many Syrians and Iranians have been caught making illegal entry. Both Syria and Iran are supporters of Hezbollah, have chemical weapons and materials for dirty bombs, and hate “the Great Satan.” Get Ready for Denials
Don’t for a minute tell me that the Democrats love free enterprise. “The Dodd-Frank Act requires large financial institutions deemed systemically important to submit an orderly resolution plan each year. These plans — called “living wills” — run thousands of pages. They describe the company and its risk exposures, as well as the company’s strategy for reorganizing itself in bankruptcy without causing financial instability or using taxpayer dollars. If banks fail to persuade regulators that they have a realistic and safe plan for winding down, the government can use Dodd-Frank’s Orderly Resolution Authority to resolve them outside the court system if they get into trouble. In other words, banks have enormous incentive to make sure their living wills are convincing. [Snip] To address these problems, the living will process must be made more transparent and boundaries placed on regulators’ discretionary powers. One way forward is to require regulators to provide clear standards for an acceptable living will, and to codify these standards into regulations that apply to all designated holding companies. Through the guise of living wills, the government currently has the authority to determine company structure, business lines and investments at the most fundamental levels of large financial services firms. Regulators’ recommendations are binding and not subject to public comment, nor are they applied equally across all institutions. This bears little, if any, resemblance to free enterprise.” Why the ‘Living Will’ Process Sets Banks Up for Failure
The Left will be for it until it curtails their freedom of the press. “Any freedom-loving person would be outraged at the attempt by the Federal Communications Commission to inject itself into monitoring the practices of print and broadcast media organizations, but the outrage came almost exclusively from conservatives, which is highly instructive. But liberals and conservatives are on such different planets that they don’t even agree that this development – to which only conservatives objected – is instructive, which is also instructive. The Washington Post was hoist with its own petard in reacting with a subtly pointed headline, “Proposed FCC study of news organizations sparks conservative outcry,” and exposing its own biases rather than those of conservatives. Simply put, everyone should object to this proposed action, and the fact that only conservatives did shows they are the only ones acting as freedom’s guardians. That liberals didn’t object is bad but is made much worse by their opinion that conservatives’ objection is itself objectionable.” FCC’S CHILLING TOTALITARIAN PROPOSAL: David Limbaugh is shocked liberals didn’t object to newsroom-snooping idea
The economy be damned. “Gov. Steve Beshear of Kentucky, the nation’s third largest coal producer, said he believes the proposed rule “would decimate Kentucky’s economy.” He expressed concern that the proposal “does not provide adequate flexibility or attainable goals.” Beshear added that President Obama’s desire “to protect our climate is one that I share, but that desire must be attained while also providing economic security to our families and businesses.” Joining Kentucky, West Virginia and Wyoming in the lawsuit are Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota and South Carolina. Murray Energy Corp., of St. Clairsville, Ohio, the nation’s largest privately held coal mining company, already has sought to waylay the rule.” States Sue to Block EPA Carbon Regulations: “We will use many different tactics to fight this rule,” vows governor of the largest coal-producing state.
I don’t get the Left’s LOVE of pot, but hatred of cigarettes, even the electronic version. “Recently, the New York Times ran several high-profile essays justifying the liberalization of marijuana laws. Editorialists addressed the health effects, the need for product standards, and the importance of banning sales to minors. Another major recommendation was to keep marijuana production and marketing from becoming corporatized as “Big Pot.” Agree or disagree with marijuana legalization, it’s refreshing to see sober efforts to balance freedom to use marijuana, an intoxicant, against the harms that can result from expanded legal access to it. We only wish that such consideration was being extended to electronic cigarettes: a nicotine delivery device that has the potential to change the face of smoking and help alleviate one of the nation’s biggest public health problems. Instead, the FDA is considering a regulation that would block e-cigarettes from fulfilling that potential. Electronic cigarettes and their relatives (called “vaping pens” or “mods”) are battery-powered devices that heat liquid nicotine and emit mostly water vapor. Because no tobacco is combusted, no carcinogenic tar is inhaled or released into the shared environment. That makes e-cigarettes far safer than traditional cigarettes.” A Flawed E-Cigarette Regulation
Dumbing down our students in exchange for Left wing propaganda. “Ms. Ratner concluded that Common Core is making simple math concepts “artificially intricate and complex with the pretense of being deeper, while the actual content taught was primitive.” The bottom line is that Common Core is inferior to the current good California standards, and the $15.8 billion spent nationally to develop and adopt Common Core was a gigantic waste. College ready? That’s another deceit. Math experts are saying that Common Core standards are not preparing students for colleges to which most parents aspire to send their children. The Common Core History Standards have just become available. Real scholars say they are a “stealthy” plan to teach kids a leftwing curriculum. Scholar Stanley Kurtz says that the new plan for teaching American History is spelled out in the SAT college entrance and Advanced Placement exams. They pitch out “traditional emphasis on America’s founders and the principles of constitutional government” in favor of a leftist “emphasis on race, gender, class, ethnicity.” According to Kurtz, “James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and the other founders are largely left out of the new test unless they are “presented as examples of conflict and identity by class, gender, race, ethnicity, etc.” The text of the new AP U.S. History exam has been closely guarded, revealed only to a few certified AP U.S. History teachers who are sworn to secrecy.” Common Core’s Growing Unpopularity
What can we expect that our government will do should Ebola, or any other serious, contagious disease come to our shores? “Related: The CDC’s controversial quarantine powers. “In some cases, this includes the power to isolate people, and hold a healthy person against his will. The CDC’s quarantine authority has been strengthened in recent years. But we haven’t had sufficient debate about how to balance individual rights against public health in these circumstances. And when quarantine is even effective. We should revisit these issues before we find ourselves invoking these tools. . . .” WHAT WOULD HAPPEN if someone got Ebola in America.
This is why I refuse to go to movies anymore. “Can Hollywood rescue Democrats from Harry Reid and Barack Obama? It seems doubtful, but if not, Reid and Obama shouldn’t worry too much. Hollywood will eventually produce a movie extolling their brilliance and honesty in retrospect, even after their terrible demagoguery and incompetence becomes crystal clear to everyone. Just ask Dan Rather.” Hollywood turns out big to rescue Reid, Senate Dems
They can’t bare to think about being out of power. “Senate Democratic candidates have kept up a torrential fundraising pace, giving several in top races a crucial advantage as they fight to hold the upper chamber this fall. But the GOP’s dominance in super-PAC spending forced some incumbents to spend heavily, narrowing their cash edge over their Republican challengers.” Dems raise big to save the Senate
Keep meddling Harry, because you’re only helping our side! “Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is having a summer like his baseball idol, Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper. His p’olitical operation isn’t living up to the hype, he’s striking out as he’s tried to intervene in pivotal Senate contests, and there’s a growing chance he’ll be sent to the minority at the end of the year. (Harper, for all his struggles, looks like he’s avoided that worst-case outcome.)For all the internal Republican Party divisions, the GOP’s party committees and allied outside groups have overcome their biggest challenge entering the year. They’ve successfully navigated incumbents and favored Senate candidates through difficult primaries, avoiding the specter of terminally weak candidates emerging in battleground races. The same can’t be said for Democrats, who frittered away opportunities in South Dakota and Montana because of internal conflicts and botched maneuvering. Meanwhile, Democratic attempts to intervene in Republican Senate primaries haven’t worked, depriving several Democrats of the chance to run against weak challengers. Reid’s fingerprints are over all those moves, with his majority on the line.” If Democrats Lose the Senate, Harry Reid Deserves the Blame: The Senate majority leader’s aggressive tactics have backfired, threatening his hold on leadership.
Conservatives on Facebook, beware. Emphasis mine. “Politically active liberal Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook is now blocking Republican candidates from his social media website Facebook in the GOP’s bid to retake control of the U.S. Senate in November. Facebook deleted late Monday night an “Event” this author created to ask for donations to Kevin Wade, running for U.S. Senate as a Republican in Delaware from his 4,937 Facebook friends.” The Facebook Factor in the GOP’s Battle to Take the Senate
Voting while plugging our noses is better than not voting, in my opinion… “’There are a lot of bad Republicans. There are no good Democrats. The country is in the balance.’” Ann Coulter: We have no choice but to vote for these Republicans, including the crap-ass ones
All this talking out of both sides of her mouth is quite nauseating. “She didn’t mean to attack him, you know. That razor-sharp line about how “Don’t do stupid stuff” isn’t an organizing principle was aimed at some other administration that takes “Don’t do stupid stuff” as its organizing principle.
“Secretary Clinton was proud to serve with President Obama, she was proud to be his partner in the project of restoring American leadership and advancing America’s interests and values in a fast changing world,” said the statement, shared with POLITICO.
‘She continues to share his deep commitment to a smart and principled foreign policy that uses all the tools at our disposal to achieve our goals. Earlier today, the secretary called President Obama to make sure he knows that nothing she said was an attempt to attack him, his policies, or his leadership.’” Trouble in paradise: Hillary calls Obama to heal rift over Atlantic interview
In politics, it is shameless lying, all the time. “That Mrs. Clinton would up and disavow President Obama’s policy of ceding the entire world to evil forces — a policy she embraced and enforced for four years as his top diplomat — is a little hard to accept now as genuine. It is by far the most naked and self-serving political repositioning in American politics since, well, since the last time Hillary Rodham Clinton performed a bald and shameless U-turn on Middle East war policy.” Hillary Clinton — a woman of no convictions
You should’ve kept your enemies closer, President Obama. “Memo to President Obama: You should have made Hillary your vice president back in 2008. She was the obvious choice. But you believed you were strong enough without her, and worried that Bill would be impossible to control. Big mistake. If Hillary were veep, she’d be inside the tent even now, biting her lip. Instead, she took her leave, wrote her book and is now taking aim — at you.” Hammering Obama: Hillary has only begun
The Left wants everything for free. “Should women be given free tampons? That’s what columnist Jessica Valenti argues for in her latest article for Britain’s Guardian newspaper. Valenti claims that because women make up half the world’s population and need feminine hygiene products (unlike her headline, the article is not specific to tampons) for a good chunk of their lives, they should be free. “But this is less an issue of costliness than it is of principle: menstrual care is health care, and should be treated as such,” Valenti wrote. I would counter that food is something that 100 percent of the population needs, multiple times a day, every day of their lives. Shouldn’t that be treated as health care?” Should tampons be free?
Under Leftist Mayor de Blasio, the squeegee men are back, and crime is rising. “How comforting to be blessed with a short memory. You can awaken each morning in the belief that the halcyon conditions that greet you as you go about your day have always existed, and that no effort or even thought need be expended to secure their continuance. Consider the city of New York, whose citizens (or at least a majority of its voters) seem to live under the shared delusion that the low crime currently seen across the five boroughs is simply the way things are, have always been, and always will be. How else to explain the election of Bill de Blasio? [Snip] But the squeegee men may be the least of New York’s crime problems. According to NYPD statistics, shootings in the city are up 10.3 percent for the year (PDF), and in the 28-day period that ended July 27, they were up 21 percent over the same time period last year. In the police precincts under the Brooklyn North command, shootings were up 52 percent for the same four-week period. And while the bad numbers are going up, the good ones are going down: the New York Post reported in June that gun seizures by NYPD officers were down by 10.2 percent for the year.” Manhattan at the Crossroads: Will Manhattan return to the crime-ridden Bad Old Days of the Death Wish era? That’s entirely up to Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The Left: making everyone equally poor, miserable and stupid, one school at a time. “’If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ is a motto that Mayor de Blasio and many other activist politicians pay no attention to. He is also out to curtail charter schools, which include schools that have achieved outstanding education results for poor minority students, who cannot get even adequate results in all too many of the other public schools. What is wrong with charter schools and with elite high schools like Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech? Despite their educational achievements, they have political problems. The biggest political problem is that the teachers’ unions don’t like them — and the teachers’ unions are the 800-pound gorilla among the special interests in Bill de Blasio’s Democratic party. The next-biggest political problem is that people who don’t pass the tests for the elite public high schools don’t want to have to pass tests to get in.” De Blasio’s War on Achievement: New York City’s mayor is on a crusade to solve an educational problem that doesn’t exist.
Lobbyists and Obama
The mainstream press is waking up very slowly. “Finally, mainstream journalists are onto Barack Obama’s game. Their breaking-news shocker? Turns out all that “hope and change” stuff was just hot air. A new report from the D.C.-based press shows that — gasp — the White House is infested with Beltway lobbyists. Good morning, sleepyheads! According to Politico’s analysis published on Monday, the “Obama administration has hired about 70 previously registered corporate, trade association and for-hire lobbyists. And many of these former lobbyists work at the highest levels of government.” The K Street President: When Obama hires lobbyists, forget about the culture of corruption. It’s a celebration of diversity.
Another promise thrown under the bus. “The Hope and Change of 2008 has fully and completely descended into hypocrisy and despair, but Politico remains, as ever, forgiving of the president. “Barack Obama promised to take on Washington’s revolving door culture,” a report on Obama’s about-face on lobbyists began. “Washington won.” Such lengths to go merely to avoid admitting that Obama took you for a ride. Washington didn’t win. Obama capitulated in a fight he was never going to wage vigorously in the first place.” Hope and Change’: Lobbyists return to the White House in droves
How many Obama promises can fit under one bus? Emphasis mine. “While Congress is on recess and President Obama vacations in Martha’s Vineyard, a coalition of free press groups is escalating an already-aggressive campaign against the Obama administration for allegedly freezing out the press and cracking down on reporters. The flood of critical letters and petitions and statements from First Amendment groups marks a new level of tension in a relationship that for years has been deteriorating. Though Obama, as a candidate in 2008, was widely seen to enjoy favorable media treatment, his administration now is fielding accusations that it’s one of the least transparent in history.” Rift grows between Obama, media as press groups blast administration ‘spin’
The truth be damned. “Via the Daily Caller, you would think an eyewitness account of the disappearance of the last American POW in Afghanistan would be easy money for a publisher. But sometimes there are higher considerations.
While the U.S. Army weighs whether to bring charges against Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was freed earlier this year after spending nearly five years as a Taliban captive in Afghanistan, six of his former platoon mates are shopping proposals for a book and movie that would render their own harsh verdicts…
“I’m not sure we can publish this book without the Right using it to their ends,” Sarah Durand, a senior editor at Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, wrote in an email to one of the soldiers’ agents.” Report: Simon & Schuster imprint rejected book about Bergdahl because it might hurt Obama
