Stories of the Day

Winning at any cost. “Thad Cochran will continue in the Senate only because the GOP establishment used “walking around” money to drum up minority liberal voters for Cochran. In Mississippi, despite an unenforceable law saying that only voters intending to vote Republican can participate in GOP primaries, there was nothing preventing that kind of primary manipulation.” Democrats Put Cochran Over the Top

“The establishment–Tea Party narrative has been overdone this cycle (see, for example, Joel’s post earlier on how that frame didn’t apply in Oklahoma, whereLankford won tonight), but Mississippi is a clear victory for the establishment, which out-hustled and out-maneuvered tea-party groups in the run-off to drag the lackluster Cochran over the finish line. I thought he’d be a goner in the first round, and was even more certain he’d lose the run-off. The tactics here smacked of desperation, but it was desperation that worked (although some of it’s not going to sit well). I think it would have been much better if Cochran had retired rather than run again, and then there would have been alternatives other than Chris McDaniel, who didn’t inspire enormous confidence. Now, Cochran will win almost certainly win another term, and deep-red Mississippi will still lack a difference-making conservative in the Senate.” Establishment Wins in Mississippi

Another reason to stop giving money to the NRSC. “National conservative groups are angry after incumbent Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran pulled off a victory in the state’s GOP run-off — likely because of his campaign’s outreach to Democratic voters. “It’s disgraceful that self-described GOP leaders like Mitch McConnell, John McCain, the Chamber of Commerce and the NRSC would champion a campaign platform of pork barrel spending and insider deal-making, while recruiting Democrats to show up at the polls,” Matt Kibbe of FreedomWorks said after the results came in. [Snip] Dr. Milton Wolf, a Republican challenging incumbent Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, said: “Tonight’s election in Mississippi is yet another sign that the Washington Republican establishment has joined league with Democrats to declare all-out war on conservatives and our country is at stake.” “Even worse, NRSC chairman Jerry Moran spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of ‘Republican’ independent expenditure money turning out Democrats to manipulate a Republican primary in a safe Republican seat,” Wolf said, “showing just how low the party bosses are willing to go to protect fellow insiders.” Conservative Groups Angry After Thad Cochran Wins With Help From Democrats

Looking suspicious. “Thomas Lifson draws attention to the notice taken here by Sundance of Conservative Treehouse to the peculiar advertisement posted by DHS this past January:

On January 29th of this year, the federal government posted an advertisement seeking bids for a vendor contract to handle “Unaccompanied Alien Children.“

Not just any contract mind you, but a very specific contract – for a very specific number of unaccompanied minors: 65,000.

• Why would DHS and ICE be claiming “surprise” by the current influx of unaccompanied minors on the border in June, when they were taking bids for an exact contract to handle the exact situation in January?

• Secondly, how could they possibly anticipate 65,000 unaccompanied minors would be showing up at the border, when the most ever encountered in a previous year was 5,000 total?” HELP WANTED, OBAMA STYLE

“Shawn Moran, spokesman for the National Border Patrol Council, said Tuesday that the current wave of illegal aliens flooding across America’s southern border — creating what President Obama has called an “urgent humanitarian situation” — will not abate until we stop releasing those who have entered our country illegally. “The number one thing we need to do is close the loophole; we have to stop releasing people,” Moran said on The Glenn Beck Program with guest host Dana Loesch. “I know it tugs at the heartstrings when it’s children, but we cannot allow people to be released.” “That’s their end goal,” Moran continued. “They want to get to America, and we’re facilitating that. We’re processing them with very few consequences, and then telling them to show back up for a hearing that we know they’re never going to show up for.” The number of illegal aliens crossing over America’s southern border is reported to haveincreased tenfold since 2011, with an estimated 60,000 children estimated to arrive in 2014 alone.” Border Patrol Council Spokesman’s ‘Number One’ Thing America Must Do to Stem the Tide of Illegals

Stories like this should be spread far and wide. “Ronnie Osburn was preparing to talk to National Review Online Thursday about lawlessness in his border community when his home was broken into. Osburn, a rancher who lives just south of a Border Patrol checkpoint in Brooks County, Texas, says he stepped away for about 45 minutes, and when he returned somebody had trashed his house. The trespassers shattered his gun case, leaving a trail of blood throughout the house, but dropped the guns near the kitchen before scattering out the back door. They had searched through the house, opened drawers, and even left a heap of uncooked bacon in a frying pan on the stove. Ranchers in South Texas say they are seeing a greater criminal element among illegal immigrants trespassing through their property.” Texas Ranchers Under Attack: A home break-in in a border area overrun by illegal immigrants

As if we don’t have enough to worry about… “A Border Patrol official says he’s concerned the medical screening at the Border Patrol Station in McAllen, Texas, has grown so porous that a new superbug will make its way into the United States through the station.” Texas Immigration Center a Magnet for Disease: Border Patrol union says poor medical screening risks new virus outbreak.

The Clintons

When you have it, you don’t have to worry about it. Read the whole thing. “In the latest Clinton money quote, the career first daughter pronounced in a Fast Company interview that she has “tried really hard to care about things that were very different from my parents. I was curious if I could care about [money] on some fundamental level, and I couldn’t. That wasn’t the metric of success that I wanted in my life.” How indifferent is she to the lure of filthy lucre? Clinton is currently pulling down $600,000 per year for the kind of no-show job you probably thought had disappeared with the demise of the American mafia.” Here’s How Little Chelsea Clinton Cares About Money, In Dollars: Boring, vacuous first daughter’s purchases speak louder than her words.

Stop digging. “Several longtime Clinton allies said they weren’t sure his comments would end the criticism, which came on the heels of several stumbles in which Hillary Clinton tried to explain away her finances. The comments have left even some allies of the Clintons bewildered. “I don’t want to acknowledge that it’s been a problem, but it’s been a problem,” said one former Clinton aide who maintains ties with those in the former New York senator’s inner circle.” Clintons are in damage control mode

The Economy

Economy not recovering. “As we noted here on May 29, the Department of Commerce reported that the nation’s economy contracted at an annual rate of about 1 percent during the first quarter of this year.  This morning the DoC is out with revised numbers, showing the economy shrank much more than previously thought: 2.9 percent.  Last year the White House had predicted 2.6 percent growth for the first quarter.  Oops. The suitably grumpy folks at ZeroHedge put these revised figures into perspective:

Personal consumption expenditures somehow crashed from 3.1% to just 1.0%, far below the 2.4% expected, meaning that all hope of a consumer recovery is dead. Finally, as a reminder, US GDP has never fallen more than 1.5% except during or just before an NBER-defined recession since quarterly GDP records began in 1947. Good luck department of truth propaganda machine, because even assuming 3% growth every other quarter in 2014 means 2014 GDP will be 1.5% at best!” ONE SHOVEL-READY JOB: THE GRAVE OF THE DEMS SENATE MAJORITY?

“This time the news is bad across the board. Exports dropped 8.9% in Q1, a huge drop from 2013, which wasn’t exactly spectacular either. Real final sales of domestic product dropped 1.3%, where in earlier estimates it had remained in positive territory. Business investment also fell.” QI GDP revised sharply downward to -2.9%; Flashback: Remember when ObamaCare saved us from contraction?

“Mulligan, a kind of anti-Piketty, delivers facts and numbers. He shows which programs expanded or maintained during and after the financial crisis made unemployment higher. Food stamps, for example, were made available to more people, decreasing their interest in finding employment that might disqualify them. Legislated changes in the unemployment-insurance programs extended the period in which Americans could receive such benefits. COBRA, the program ensuring laid-off workers access to their jobs’ health insurance for a time, was sustained as well.” Mulligan for Hayek: Casey Mulligan gets the Hayek Prize for proving that redistribution hobbles the economy over time.

Pray this is so, because our country is at stake. “Are we seeing a full-scale Democratic Party meltdown? We might be. The most recent polling shows the president at all-time lows. This matters because presidential approval has, in the past, been a key factor in the results of midterm elections.” Donkeys’ disaster? Obama’s policies may doom Dems

Foreign Policy

Hard times ahead. “Amid all the talk of the isolationism that supposedly characterizes the Obama administration’s foreign policy, we forget that since World War II, the global order has largely been determined by U.S. engagement. The historically rare state of prosperity and peace that defined the postwar world were due to past U.S. vigilance and sacrifice.  [Snip] The Obama administration declares climate change the chief global threat. That new inanimate target is welcome news to aggressive nations that had once feared that their own reckless behavior might have been so singled out. Americans did not fully appreciate the costly postwar global order that the United States had established over the last seventy years. Maybe they will start to as they witness it vanish.” Obama’s World Disorder

Please read the whole thing, and then send it along to all your Democrat friends. “The Democratic party today is, quite simply, the party of government and the natural home of the managerial class. It is no accident, as the Marxists say, that the National Treasury Employees Union, which represents the IRS, gave 94 percent of its political donations during the 2012 election cycle to Democratic candidates openly at war with the Tea Party — the same group singled out by Lois Lerner. The American Federation of Government Employees, which represents the VA, gave 97 percent of its donations to Democrats at the national level and 100 percent to Democrats at the state level.” Of the Bureaucrats, by the Bureaucrats, for the Bureaucrats: The naked self-interest of the government-worker class

The Left

How can we wake up the low info folks to the truth? “I wonder where we’ll be after another eight years of this. One of the darker trends of the Obama era has been the remorseless convergence of the Democrat ideologues and the punitive bureaucracy. In that sense, the removal of the Washington Redskins’ trademark – their property rights – for disrespecting progressive ideology is a harbinger of things to come. What a shame this ruthlessness is never extended to ISIS or the mullahs or Putin. But you have to be able to prioritize. America is a eunuch abroad but ever more despotic at home.” The Merger of the Party and the State

Distorting the truth, because they know many Americans are clueless, and lazy. “The American Left has been expert in indoctrinating a new generation with false history. We have seen this with Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick’s Showtime TV series on the Cold War, and especially with the writings and pseudo-history of the late Howard Zinn. While conservatives — with some laudable exceptions — concentrate largely on policy issues, the left knows that it is not sufficient to work only for its own political agenda. The left realizes it needs to capture the realm of culture, which includes the portrayal of the American past. [Snip] The left continues to present its ideologically determined view of the past as a tool to inspire today’s naïve and uneducated young activists, many of them taught these falsehoods by leftist professors at major universities. Their project is to mine history for heroes and martyrs, even if the heroes they praise turn out to be not heroes at all, and their martyrs actually guilty. Those of us who respect the truth have an obligation not to leave history to them.”  How the American Left Distorts History in an Attempt to Find Past Heroes and Create a New Generation of Activists

Sometimes the truth slips out. “President Obama is under fire for aggressively using executive orders to provide amnesty to illegal alien minors and enact other liberal policies, but Department of Homeland Secretary Jeh Johnson indicated in a Tuesday hearing he understands in principle that Congress writes the laws, not Obama. “Last time I looked an executive order can’t supersede the law,” Johnson said. Johnson made his remarks during a Congressional hearing on the current crisis of unaccompanied minors crossing the southern border.” OBAMA’S DHS SECRETARY: ‘LAST TIME I LOOKED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER CAN’T SUPERSEDE THE LAW’

The Obamas

Good question. Emphasis mine. Why are the American people shuffling like sleepwalkers to the authoritarianism of Michelle Obama, and helplessly submitting to the totalitarianism of the president and his lying cohorts?  The fundamental psychological explanation is the irresistible appeal of either submitting to oppression or imposing it on others, due to the false guidance of egoism. Authoritarianism and totalitarianism manifest differently psychologically and politically.  But both arise from ego defense mechanisms.  And both are more virulent in groups because individual responsibility is diffused. Individual and collective egos tend to look for a footpath to slavery, because the ego functions under the sway of defense mechanisms that block anxiety, shame, and guilt.  Their function is to provide excuses to the ego to avoid self-insight while grabbing what it wants. [Snip] The human ego, seemingly designed to choose defense mechanisms, is a worthy opponent of God Himself.  Nevertheless, it is capable of recognizing higher truths.  Perhaps the apparent unhappiness of Barry and Shelly’s marriage stems from the fact that it is a union of an authoritarian and a totalitarian.  (Or is that golfatarian?)  In any case, the marriage between America and the Obamas cannot end too soon to save America.  Then let’s have the courage to face why we have walked so far along this path to serfdom, and never let it happen again.” When Barry Met Shelly: Authoritarian and Totalitarian Psychology of the Obamas

War on Women

Obama’s war on women continues. “It’s hard for an ordinary person to figure out whether health insurance will be more expensive under the Affordable Care Act. First of all, figures that look good “on average,” often mask extremely wide differences across age groups. Secondly, it’s hard to find pre-ACA policies that are comparable to the policies available post-ACA. These differences are shown by two recent reports with sharply different implications. The government’s report shows that federal tax credits make health insurance premiums more affordable for everyone.  The academics’ report, however, shows that women age 55 to 64 will face a huge spike in cost when they go out to buy individual insurance on the federal exchange. These women bear the brunt of the increased premiums and out of pocket expenses after the Affordable Care Act.” Older women bear the brunt of higher insurance costs under Obamacare
