Stories of the Day
All going as planned. Study: Millennials Deeply Confused About Their Politics, Finances, and Culture: Or at least deeply contradictory: They’re always connected but distrustful. They’re selfish yet accepting of minorities. They’re “independents” who mostly vote Democratic and love Obama while hating Obamacare.
All going as planned, Part 2. The health-care law was generated by an administration promoting government as the solution to inequality, yet the greatest irony of ObamaCare is what will undoubtedly follow as a long-term, unintended consequence of the law: a decidedly unequal, two-tiered health system. One will be for the poor and middle class, and a separate system will be for those with the money or power to circumvent ObamaCare. [Snip] As America doubles down on government authority over health care, Europeans with the means to do so are increasingly circumventing their own centralized systems. In Britain, even though they’re already paying for the National Health Service, six million Brits—two-thirds of citizens earning more than $78,700—now buy private health insurance. Meanwhile, more than 50,000 travel out of the U.K. annually, spending more than $250 million, to receive treatment more readily than they can at home. Even in Sweden, the mother of all welfare nations, half a million Swedes now use private insurance, up from 100,000 a decade ago. Unless ObamaCare is drastically altered, America’s health care will also become even more divided, with rising inequality. Just as in the U.K. and other countries where governments take an outsize role in dictating health-care policy, only the lower and middle classes in America will suffer the full consequences of ObamaCare.” The Coming Two-Tier Health System: ObamaCare is already creating one class of care for the poor and middle class and another for the affluent.
This is what happens when the government runs things. A private sector company would not be able to “run out of cash.” “’It is essential politicians from all parties are honest about the scale of the financial pressures facing the NHS and initiate a public debate about the long-term sustainability of the health and social care system before, not after, the general election.’” Millions to suffer as NHS is ‘about to run out of cash’
Remember, President Obama was re-elected on the meme that Al-Qaida is on the run. Not so much apparently… “The State Department released its annual report on global terrorism showing a 40% increase in terrorism attacks last year compared to 2012. The reason? That organization that President Obama claimed during his re-election campaign was “on the run” has been revitalized and it’s offshoots and franchies are wreaking havoc around the world.” State Department Report: 40% rise in terrorism last year
As a Marine Mom, this story really hit home. Please spread the word… Why isn’t Washington doing anything about this? Emphasis mine. “Onetime Sgt. Terry Mahoney, who served in Operation Desert Storm and Yugoslavia, doesn’t know onetime Sgt. Amir Hekmati, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He lives south of Gettysburg across the Maryland state line and doesn’t know the Hekmati family in Flint, Mich. But when his schedule allows, he’ll go to the White House and stand on the sidewalk with his sign for an hour because, as he told PJM, Amir is his brother in a vow of Semper Fidelis. “I’ll get a bunch of reactions,” Mahoney said. “My fellow Marines will just say, ‘Let’s go in and get him.’” He stresses that he’s not exactly comfortable wielding a sign, but feels it’s the least he can do to respect the fraternal bonds of the service. “I wish I had more resources to do more; we’ll do what we can.” People may be shocked to hear that Amir has spent more than twice as long in Iranian custody as the 1979 embassy hostages. That he’s had two birthdays in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison. They may be surprised to hear his story, since in a town where many of those held unjustly spur congressional resolutions his name has never appeared on a piece of legislation. They’re ultimately floored by the tragic, shocking twists to an all-American story — a Midwestern man who served his country with honor takes a break between work and going back to school to pay his first visit to extended family in the land of his parents’ birth, yet finds himself facing a death sentence on trumped-up charges.” Marine Vet Amir Hekmati Nears 1,000 Days of Captivity by Iran
Stories from Yesterday
A story that must not die because four of our own died. “Not the first time the White House has tried to spin itself out of a political jam on Benghazi byvery finely parsing a particular choice of words. The day after the attack, Obama said vaguely in the Rose Garden that “no acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation;” after that, however, he studiously refused to describe Benghazi as a terrorist attack. Then, later, having taken some heat for that, he insisted that he’d been calling it terrorism all along, pointing back to his Rose Garden statement as proof. WaPo’s fact-checker slapped him with four Pinocchios for that. Now here’s Carney insisting that the Ben Rhodes email that lit up conservative media yesterday, which listed as one of the White House’s goals before Susan Rice’s Sunday show appearances “to underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy,” didn’t necessarily mean Benghazi — even though the whole reason Rice was booked was because a U.S. ambassador had just been killed in the American consulate there. It’s basically his version of “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.” Is it working?” Jay Carney clashes with Jon Karl: That Benghazi e-mail from Ben Rhodes wasn’t about Benghazi
“There are a few conclusions to draw from Jay Carney’s performance yesterday before the White House press corps when responding to questions from ABC News’s Jonathan Karl on the Ben Rhodes email released by court order following a Judicial Watch lawsuit. [Snip] The White House is desperate. [Snip] The story is no longer a “Fox News Story”. [Snip] The public does not trust the Obama administration’s or Hillary Clinton’s stories. [Snip] If Speaker Boehner choose to appoint a select committee, this could blow wide open. [Snip] Even is Boehner declines, there will be a new Congress in 2015.” Benghazigate enters new phase
Emphasis mine. “Missing from much of the coverage of yesterday’s revelations that Senior White House adviser Ben Rhodes coordinated an effort to obfuscate the truth behind the Sept 11 2012 terror attacks in Benghazi was a key detail about the insidious relationship between politics and media in Washington. The brother of Ben Rhodes is David Rhodes, president of CBS News. It isn’t enough for CBS News to mention the relationship as a parenthetical statement as they did in yesterday’s coverage. Larger questions deserve to be answered about the atmosphere and culture at CBS News and how open Rhodes is to any investigations into the Benghazi story and his brother’s involvement.” Brother of CBS News President at Center of Latest Benghazi Bombshell
“Carney’s claim that the Rhodes email did not need to be produced because it didn’t have to do with Benghazi is one more in a long series of desperate falsehoods dating back to September 11, 2012, when President Obama and his administration decided it was better to lie to the American people than to risk defeat in the upcoming election.” JAY CARNEY LIES ABOUT THE BENGHAZI EMAIL
“Carney’s answer is ridiculous. Of course the email bears more broadly on conditions across the Middle East, but it relates most specifically to Benghazi. Why was Susan Rice appearing on every Sunday morning talk show? Because four Americans were killed in Benghazi. Why was the administration’s top political team gathering to prepare her for those appearances? Because four Americans were killed in Benghazi. Why does the email begin with the stated goal of conveying that the Obama administration is doing everything it can to protect its people abroad? Because four Americans were killed in Benghazi. Why is the group talking about “bringing people who harm Americans to justice”? The only place where Americans were harmed was Benghazi. Obviously, the email relates to Benghazi. And equally obviously, its reference to “underscor[ing] that these protests are rooted in an internet video, and not a broader failure of policy” was intended to deflect blame for the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi.” JAY CARNEY LIES ABOUT THE BENGHAZI EMAIL
“The point is Rhodes’s email reveals that Rice’s false story was not an innocent mistake. It was a cynical attempt to divert public attention from the revival of Islamist terrorism at a moment during a competitive reelection when the president was basing his reelection in no small part on the notion that he was a strong leader who had vanquished that movement.” Why the Benghazi Email Still Matters
“For over a year and a half the White House successfully withheld communications between public servants, apparently in hopes that the death of four Americans in Benghazi would not become an issue in the 2012 election (at the eleventh hour CNN’s Candy Crowley did her best to ensure that goal by unethically becoming both moderator and advocate of Barack Obama in the second debate). Even with the heavily censored and redacted recent releases of White House e-mails, one of the many messaging “goals” of Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes (“To underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy”) is the evidence that proves exactly what the White House so far has denied: the highest White House officials were in a pre-election frenzy to pressure almost everyone from the White House staffers to the CIA to massage the truth of how four Americans died in Benghazi in order to keep up a campaign-driven facade of a spontaneous video-driven riot, one that trumped the truth of a pre-planned terrorist attack, the possibility of which intelligence officers had on prior occasions warned about and were ignored.” The Truth Drips Out
“Secretary Clinton’s minions at the State Department had started spinning the video fraud hours earlier, in Egypt. The sooner Americans grasp that, the sooner they will comprehend the breathtaking depth of the president’s Benghazi cover-up.” Obama’s ‘Blame the Video’ Fraud Started in Cairo, Not Benghazi: The e-mail revelations and the Obama administration’s lies
“All of this bears directly on Mrs. Clinton’s qualifications to be President. Her State Department overlooked repeated warnings about a growing militant threat in Benghazi, denying requests for improved security. And the father of a CIA contractor told media outlets that Mrs. Clinton tried to comfort him by promising that the maker of the YouTube video would be ‘prosecuted and arrested,” though the video had nothing to do with his son’s death. The several congressional investigations into Benghazi have been undermined by turf battles and shoddy work. We long ago advised that a select committee could focus the effort and bring overdue clarity to a shameful episode in American history. It still could.’” The Missing Benghazi Email: New evidence that Ben Rhodes told Susan Rice and Hillary Clinton to blame the video.
“Joe Scarborough ripped into co-host Donny Deutsch on Morning Joe earlier today after Deutsch attempted to make the issue of the Benghazi cover-up at the White House all about Republicans in 2014. The segment starts off with some fluff, and then turns to Benghazi shortly afterward. The big explosion starts after the six-minute mark, when Deutsch begins to warn the GOP not to bite on this scandal, and then asserts that the media has “covered it” sufficiently. Mika Brzezinski can’t buy that one, either (via Mediaite).” Video: Scarborough explodes when Deutsch makes Benghazi about … Republicans
If you live in Arizona, you should read this. With a crowded field of NINE Republican candidates running for governor (and the Democrats putting up only one!), as Republicans we have a big decision to make before we vote in August. “LOPEZ: Arizona has this national reputation at this point for harshness — toward immigrants, toward anyone with same-sex attractions. What do you make of that? Is it fair? Would you do things differently to give people a different impression of the state? DUCEY: The idea of Arizona as a harsh, intolerant place is a storyline that liberals have been working since Barry Goldwater rose to national prominence 50 years ago. Anyone who thinks that way about our state hasn’t spent much time here. The only thing harsh about Arizona is the 115-degree temperature in the summer. I moved out here to attend college in 1982, and when I packed up my Datsun-B210 to drive from Toledo to Tempe, I didn’t know one person here. But it felt like I fit right in, because in Arizona you meet people from all over America, and that’s still true today. What I found is a diverse state where rights are respected, hard work is rewarded, and all that most people want from government is a chance to get ahead. I had my opportunity when some friends and I built Cold Stone Creamery, and I want everyone here to have that same chance to succeed. Just like anywhere else, you’re going to find a lot of good people who have strong feelings on the issues. And as a conservative, I can’t expect everyone to agree with me on every issue every time. But Arizonans are friendly, easygoing, and fair-minded, and my administration will reflect that spirit. We’ll treat everyone with dignity and respect. I’ll listen respectfully to different opinions, and people will always know where I stand.” Ducey Sees Possibilities: He wants to be governor of Arizona
Completely unacceptable. “Government death panels weren’t invented by Obamacare. By hiding a list of 1,600 veterans waiting to see doctors in Phoenix, the Department of Veterans Affairs is accused of 40 deaths of those who died for lack of care. Keeping them off the official list concealed the backlog and made VA bureaucrats look better and qualify for bonuses. So far, no firings, no disciplinary actions, no screaming on the evening news has resulted, although the inspector general for VA is looking into it at the insistence of Arizona lawmakers. If VA’s 300,000 federal employees can’t make health care work for our veterans, how can any number make Obamacare work for everyone else? One report says federal workers are more likely to die on the job of natural causes than to be fired, with a dismissal rate of about 0.5 percent — only one-sixth of the private sector rate. Protective red tape makes it almost impossible to fire even the grossly inept, incompetent or misbehaving. Almost.” ISTOOK: Bureaucracy doesn’t just hurt — it kills
The government does not deserve our trust. “Because 35 percent of Schott’s Supermarket’s receipts are in cash, Terry and Sandy make frequent trips to the bank to avoid tempting actual criminals by having large sums at the store. Besides, their insurance policy covers no cash loss in excess of $10,000. In 2010 and 2012, IRS agents visited the store and examined Terry’s and Sandy’s conduct. In 2012, the IRS notified them that it identified “no violations” of banking laws. But on Jan. 22, 2013, Terry and Sandy discovered that the IRS had obtained a secret warrant and emptied the store’s bank account. Sandy says that if the IRS had acted “the day before, there would have been only about $2,000 in the account.” Should we trust that today’s IRS was just lucky in its timing? [Snip] In what it probably considered an act of unmerited mercy, the IRS offered to return 20 percent of Terry’s money. Such extortion — pocketing others people’s money — often succeeds when the IRS bullies bewildered people not represented by IJ, which forced the government to return all of Terry’s and the gas station owner’s money. IJ’s countersuit seeks an injunction to prevent such IRS thefts and extortions. Meanwhile, earnest moralists might consider the possibility that Americans’ distrust of government is insufficient.” The heavy hand of the IRS seizes innocent Americans’ assets
Voting to screw themselves… They’ll figure it out eventually, but it will probably be too late. “Younger, More Affluent New Residents Are Reshaping the Vote in Metropolitan Regions of Denver, Atlanta, Washington, D.C.” Shifting Demographics Tilt Presidential Races in American Suburbs
Everything the Left implements leads to an opposite result of that which was intended. “Earlier today, GDP [yesterday] growth figures for the fourth quarter of 2013 were released by the federal government, and the numbers were not good. The economy just barely avoided painful contraction, posting annualized growth of only 0.1 percent. But for the Obamacare Truther Brigade, there was a tiny glimmer of hope. It turns out that higher than expected health care spending growth was just enough to keep that quarterly growth number out of the red. According to the BEA data, if that health spending growth had been excluded, the economy would have contracted by 1 percent. And according to the Obamacare Truthers, that is proof that Obamacare is totally making the economy awesome. [Snip] I’m old enough to remember when one of the major reasons to pass Obamacare was to reduce the percentage of the economy spent on health care, not increase it. In fact, the White House economic team put out a massive paper in June of 2009 — entitled “The Economic Case For Health Reform ” — that focused on how Obamacare would grow the economy by slashing health care cost growth. [Snip] Why, it’s almost like one of Obamacare’s major stated goals was to reduce health care spending as a percentage of GDP, so that that money could be spent on more productive aspects of the economy! The president’s economists know this, which is why they put so much effort into pushing the meme that Obamacare would reduce health care costs. Unfortunately, that’s not what’s happened. Despite numerous promises that Obamacare would “bend the cost curve downward,” health care costs have continued to increase. Given all the other blatantly broken promises about Obamacare (keeping your doctor, your health plan, etc.), though, it’s not exactly surprising.” No, Obamacare Did Not “Save The Economy” Last Quarter
May the Democrats pay a GREAT BIG PRICE in November for cramming their big government policies down our unwilling throats. “Amid a torrent of fresh and frightening polling, Democrats are clinging to some comforting silver linings: flush war chests, a few strong individual polls, a robust gender gap. But it will be months before we know if they are kittens balancing on branches or cats with nine lives. [Snip] Creating motivation for disappointed Democrats who may have once supported the Affordable Care Act but worry about it now, who fear that vibrant economic growth might not return in their time left in the workforce and who doubt Obama’s ability as commander in chief could be a lot harder than Democratic candidates expect. And pushing a minimum-wage increase, voting rights, pay equity and immigration reform may not cut it.” A.B. Stoddard: Dems on thin ice for 2014
November is coming and we can’t wait! “The trajectory of the American economy is baked in for the 2014 elections. Given the Democrats’ refusal to approve the Keystone XL pipeline and their insistence on pursuing harmful economic policies, nothing will happen between now and November that could help them. Their only option is to try and convince voters that the economy is recovering, no matter what the data says. And if you don’t believe the economy is okay, well, they want you to believe they aren’t to blame. Their denial and delusional economic happy talk is deceitful and destructive, and it only makes our problems worse.” The Insiders: The Democrats own this economy
“If we play our cards wrong, we could — as Francesco Sisci warns — undo everything that Nixon and Kissinger accomplished and help bring an unfriendly Eurasian bloc into being. I can’t think of a foreign policy more self-defeating since Napoleon III declared war on Prussia.” B’rer Putin in the Briar, er, Bamboo Patch
How far will the thought police go? “It is difficult to work up much sympathy for the man — a billionaire with a history of rank intolerance and questionable business ethics. And that his remarks came from a conversation with a woman who is not his wife does little to help his cause. Nevertheless, one should be a little reluctant to applaud the recording and dissemination of a private telephone conversation simply because it has skewered someone unpleasant. At yesterday’s press conference, one especially earnest member of the audience asked whether the powers-that-be at the NBA intended to conduct an investigation to find out if anyone else involved with basketball had ugly views — an instinct that, when coupled with the performance-art outrage and glancing-at-the-cameras indignation that are the hallmarks of our age, carried with it a whiff of inquisition. This feeling, that everyone involved with the sport had been put on notice not to deviate from the zeitgeist, was not assuaged by a statement from Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson, a former NBA All-Star who was given the task of representing the NBA players’ union. “I hope,” Johnson announced, “that every bigot in this country sees what happened to Mr. Sterling, and recognizes that if he can fall, so can you.” This rather set my teeth on edge. “Bigot” is a broad term nowadays, and its meaning changes by the day. Is anyone safe?” The Shrinking Private Sphere: Condemn Donald Sterling, but don’t applaud the means of his exposure.
Another Democrat showing his true colors–they’re just not that in to free speech. “As Democrats in the Senate begin an effort to change the Constitution in order to allow Congress only to set limits on campaign spending, Senator Ed Markey wants to police, and regulate TV, radio, and the internet in order to get rid of “hate crimes.” Not suprisingly, Constitutional experts are laughing at him.” Senator Markey looks to regulate all media for ‘hate crimes’
The Left’s “feel good” policies lead to the rich getting richer, and the bureaucrats vacuuming up the crumbs, all at the expense of the poor and the middle class. “There remains no substantial evidence that taxing rich people, confiscating their wealth, or forcing them into hiding would really do anything other than pass along some extra cash to a somewhat smug cabal of upper-middle-class bureaucrats. Unfortunately, when it comes to Thomas Piketty’s Income Inequality Good-Time Jamboree, helping people is not really the point. Feeling better about yourself—and maybe even mentally positioning yourself as a victim now and then—is. Somewhere, you see, there might be a rich man kiteboarding right now off the coast of his private island. It is not confirmed, but he may have a supermodel riding on his back. One thing is sure: He does not have to go to the post office. We must stop him. Things like embarrassingly horrible government schools, and the kids trapped in them, can wait.” The Great Income Inequality Sham
“Even if Piketty were correct in his economic conclusions and the prescriptions that follow (which I do not think he is), would it be a good idea to implement them? I submit that it would not, if a person values liberty. The compromises with liberty that such policies would entail, and the consequences of depriving the somewhat-wealthy and the really wealthy of most of the fruits of their labor (which Piketty considers the unjustified and unearned fruits of their labor), are horrifying. Whether it would end with mass kulak-murder and the Gulag, or merely a soul-killing torpor induced by the fact that initiative and innovation would no longer be especially rewarded and sloth and covetousness would be encouraged, it sounds like the opposite of Utopia.” Will Piketty’s Book Change the World? The left is desperate to believe that Capital in the Twenty-First Century will turn America to socialism.
So much for Obama’s mission accomplished moment. “The Energy and Commerce Committee trumpeted the data as proof of what Republicans have claimed for weeks: Many of the roughly 8 million Americans who signed up for private coverage under President Obama’s signature overhaul have not confirmed their enrollments through payments.” Health care bills still due for 3rd of enrollees, Republican polling shows
Interesting idea. “In the early history of America, Treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton was seduced by the wife of a political enemy with the intention of blackmailing him into complying with their wishes. Hamilton publicly confessed his transgression, and the public forgave him, completely thwarting the plans of his adversaries. I think the American people are just as forgiving today if people are willing to be honest. With so much at stake regarding our country’s future, I think now would be an excellent time to come clean for all national public figures who have been threatened by Chicago-style politics or who know that there are skeletons in their closets. If it were all done in a short time span, the media would be overwhelmed, and the people would quickly understand the extent of the disgusting and dishonest practices infesting the highest levels of government. Just as important, our public officials would be able to act with courage and conviction to rectify the corrupt practices that are all too readily ignored and that threaten the moral fabric of our nation. I am confident that the American people would be both forgiving and grateful for the willingness of public figures to take a risk to preserve the American way of life.” Say No to Blackmail: And to Chicago-style tactics in government
Not being reported in the U.S. press. “The White House spent $2,952,278 in flight expenses this year for two trips President Barack Obama took on which he spent a large chunk of his time playing golf. Obama billed both trips as official business, but he spent more time golfing than he did participating in government meetings, government oversight organization Judicial Watch reports.” President Obama racked up close to $3 million in flight costs this year on two trips he billed as business but spent playing golf
Up, up and away in his beautiful Air Force One. “Of course, every president travels as part of the job. Every president makes political appearances. And every president takes time off, though the last president tended to do that at his own secured home, not luxury resorts.” Just back from Asia, next Obama heads for Europe
File this under “If Bush had done that…” “While the American people continue to struggle to survive in any way they can, the Obamas live like leeches on the blood, sweat, and tears of every hardworking person. Days after taxpayers found out that the hotel tab for just two days of Michelle Obama’s eight-day China jaunt cost$222K for 144 rooms at the Shangri-La Hotel in Chengdu, educational foundation Judicial Watch released a report revealing that vacation travel costs to transport the first family around the globe have topped $40 million. According to the U.S. Air Force, just two of Barry-the-Duffer’s recent golf outings have cost “north of $3 million dollars.” Obama’s $40 Million Travel Tab
Obama’s approval should be in the low 20’s if folks were REALLY paying attention. “Everything they’ve done is an abject failure. I don’t believe Obama’s at 41% approval. I think it’s much lower than that, but nobody’s got the guts to actually print the truth. California? Look at Illinois. Look at Detroit. Everywhere they are running the show is either falling apart or has fallen apart, and people are doing their best to get out. People are fleeing all those places, mostly due to high taxes.” Rush Limbaugh: EVERY Obama Policy Is Now Shown to Be a Complete & Total Failure (Audio)
Click on over to see the entire list. “On September 28, 1868, a mob of Democrats massacred nearly 300 African-American Republicans in Opelousas, Louisiana. The savagery began when racist Democrats attacked a newspaper editor, a white Republican and schoolteacher for ex-slaves. Several African-Americans rushed to the assistance of their friend, and in response, Democrats went on a “Negro hunt,” killing every African-American (all of whom were Republicans) in the area they could find. (Via Grand Old Partisan) On April 20, 1871 the Republicans passed the anti-Ku Klux Klan Act outlawing Democratic terrorist groups. Republicans led the charge on civil rights and women’s rights.
