Stories of the Day

“By a margin of 61-26 percent, voters believe that the White House is “trying to cover-up” what happened in Benghazi rather than “being open and transparent.” Those views are mostly unchanged since last year.”  Fox News Poll: Voters say Obama covering up on Benghazi, want Congress to keep investigating

We need more fighters. “So many businesses are just someone’s dream—to make an honest living, to serve the community something it’s missing, to use talents to their greatest potential. Every roadblock the government erects makes those dreams slightly less possible. And, those roadblocks aren’t tripping up the lavishly rich. In this case, an unnecessary regulation in Mississippi was keeping hundreds of working- and middle-class black women from making a living doing something their community wanted to pay them for— hairbraiding. One woman fought for seven years to change that. The result is pretty much the whole reason I believe what I believe.” How removing one regulation created hundreds of jobs in Mississippi

Proof that folks are finally awaking from their deep slumber. “It is easy to see why the consensus now is that Obama lies about important matters: viaBreitbart, 64% say that if the truth about Obamacare had been known in 2009, the law never would have passed. It will be hard for Obama to do much to turn voters’ perceptions around, with Obamacare a constant reminder of his duplicity.” IT’S OFFICIAL: OBAMA IS A LIAR

Preparing to grease the wheels of their cronies. “A BLM document unearthed last week discusses mitigation strategies for the Dry Lake Solar Energy Zone. Dry Lake is just southwest of the Bundy ranch. The “mitigation strategy” proposed to use thegrazing lands near the Bundy ranch as a kind of sanctuary for the desert tortoise, because the entire region is slated for a large number of solar, wind and geothermal energy generation facilities. The solar projects especially will obliterate most of the turtle’s natural habitat.” LATEST: Clinton/Obama cronies behind push to remove Bundy cattle

Big Government

Why? “Dozens of federal agencies now have Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams to further an expanding definition of their missions. It’s not controversial that the Secret Service and the Bureau of Prisons have them. But what about the Department of Agriculture, the Railroad Retirement Board, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Office of Personnel Management, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service? All of these have their own SWAT units and are part of a worrying trend towards the militarization of federal agencies — not to mention local police forces.” The United States of SWAT? Military-style units from government agencies are wreaking havoc on non-violent citizens.

Taxes are for the little people. “Speaking of lords, both the President of the United States and the Mayor of New York (et uxores) paid 2013 income taxes at lower effective rates than mine and my wife’s (20.4% for the President and a measly 8.3% for the Mayor).  Maybe there’s a tax penalty for living in tract houses clad in middle-class vinyl and plywood instead of public mansions made of government granite and marble. But here’s the real rub: every governmental levy at every level functionally taxes our income.  And, if you’re anything like me and my wife, your functional rate of income taxation far exceeds the rate at which any 10th-century lord ever confiscated his peasants’ labor.” The Once and Future Peasants

Common Core

Fifteen states have come to their senses. We’ve still got a way to go…Fifteen states have now made strides in halting or downgrading their involvement in the standards. Last month, Indiana became the first state to exit Common Core. This is promising momentum in the effort of states to reclaim their educational decision-making authority.” Pushback Continues: States Grow Increasingly Wary of Common Core Hat tip: Gayla Coletto, Palo Verde RW member

Blowing up the constitution, one drip at a time. “A plan, now stealthily making its way through state legislatures with astonishing speed, would junk the Electoral College and award the presidency to the winner of the popular vote. The plan involves an Interstate Compact where states would commit to select electors pledged to vote for the national popular vote winner regardless of how their own state voted. When enough states pass this law, sufficient to cast 270 votes which is the majority of the Electoral College, it will take effect. The Electoral College will become a vestigial anachronism.” Democrats Conspiring to Rig Electoral College, Law Passed in 9 States So Far Hat tip: Gayla Coletto, Palo Verde RW member

Between amnesty and this, the Republican party will be no more. “Notice anything strange about that list of states signed up for the compact? Gee – they’re all blue states. That’s because unless there is a sea change in attitudes toward the parties, the adoption of the compact will be the end of GOP competitiveness in national elections. There is a massive difference between the GOP receiving 65% of the vote in Utah and Wyoming and the Democrats getting 65% of the vote in California and New York. The board will tilt decisively toward the big states. The population concentration in the big states will allow Democrats to maximize their spending per voter making it, by comparison, much less expensive than for Republicans who will have to scramble in the hinterlands to drum up votes. It will also make big cities far more important to the total vote – Democratic party territory.” New York the latest state to sign compact to end electoral college

Warring tribes. “The grand alliance of minority groups, young voters, public employee unions and women that propelled President Barack Obama to two comfortable victories may be fraying.” Time Bombs in Democratic Coalition

Freedom of Speech

I-D-I-O-T-S.The first two names on the petition are both members of the Women and Gender Studies faculty: Karen Hansen and Dian Fox. Assuming that the authors of the petition would also be the first signers, this is significant, as is the fact that four other of the first 10 signers were either core faculty or associate faculty of the Brandeis WGS program: ChaeRan Freeze, Bernadette J. Brooten, Mary Baine Campbell and Aliyyah I. Abdur-Rahman. The faculty petition claimed that, by honoring Aayan Hirsi Ali, Brandeis would suggest “to the public that violence toward girls and women is particular to Islam . . .  thereby obscuring such violence in our midst among non-Muslims, including on our own campus,” and concluded:  ”We cannot accept Ms. Hirsi Ali’s triumphalist narrative of western civilization, rooted in a core belief of the cultural backwardness of non-western peoples.” Shocking: Brandeis Feminist Faculty Led Petition Against Aayan Hirsi Ali

Politics of destruction. “The ultimate victim here is full disclosure itself. If revealing your views opens you to the politics of personal destruction, then transparency, however valuable, must give way to the ultimate core political good, free expression. Our collective loss. Coupling unlimited donations and full disclosure was a reasonable way to reconcile the irreconcilables of campaign finance. Like so much else in our politics, however, it has been ruined by zealots. What a pity.” The Zealots Win Again: When full disclosure becomes a cudgel, free expression is suppressed.

Harry Reid

Buffoon. “On the 1-10 Harry Reid Scale of Demagoguery, this gets … a seven. Reid’s Kochsteria and his labeling of two men as “un-American” from the floor of the Senate for engaging in the political process in opposition to his own agenda has to get the ten. Abusing the term “terrorist” during a partisan political event has to get a little lower rating, but not by much.” Protip from Reid: Bundy supporters are “domestic terrorists,” y’know

Hillary Clinton

The country’s not that in to Hill anymore. “A new poll shows former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s (D) numbers hitting their lowest point in six years. Meanwhile, it finds that the Republican Party is experiencing something of a renaissance. [Snip] The more surprising part of the Fox poll, though, might be how people view the Republican Party. It shows Americans are now evenly split — 45 percent to 45 percent — on the GOP. As recently as October, the same poll showed just 30 percent of Americans viewed the GOP favorably, compared to 63 percent unfavorable.” Poll: Hillary Clinton’s numbers worst since 2008, as GOP brand surges

With the Clinton’s everything’s political. “What kind of person reacts to the news of a becoming a grandparent with political cant? The Hillary Clinton type.” Hillary Clinton to be a grandmother

Results matter. “But while it might have once seemed plausible to think that she could merely coast to the presidency by touting her frequent flyer miles earned as secretary of state and mouth meaningless jargon about “soft power,” the unraveling of Obama administration foreign policy during a disastrous second term is bound to have an impact on her ability to win a general election. Though many Democrats see her as too hawkish for their taste, her farcical Russian “reset” and the failure of her attempts to appease Vladimir Putin are looking like a distinct political liability right now. The chances of another explosion in the Middle East and the fact that Iran is much closer to a nuclear weapon (developments made far more likely by her incompetent successor, John Kerry) are also undermining Clinton’s resume narrative. While none of this is likely to derail her coronation by the Democrats or encourage a serious primary opponent, the Times piece indicates that the media establishment is aware that she is a far more flawed candidate than many liberals are willing to admit.” Dems Realizing Hillary’s Record Matters

But she logged a lot of travel hours! “Hillary failed at State.  She failed spectacularly, and in almost every undertaking.  She failed in Libya, which was to have been her capstone achievement and instead became the specter that rightly haunts her ambitions. She failed in Egypt, where she first betrayed “family friends” –the Mubaraks– and then lurched with the Administration through a series of spectacularly bad decisions to leave Egypt in the firm control of a serious man with a long term hold on power who is dealing with the Russians —reversing a historic triumph of American statecraft achieved over 40 years of driving the Russians out of the regions most important country. She failed in the Congo, and she failed in Pakistan, and very much so with China.  She succeeded only in Burma, and with one blind Chinese dissident.  That’s her record. And she failed most spectacularly and obviously with Russia.” HRC” by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes

“Corruption: New emails show that both the IRS and Justice Department were involved in a probe of Tea Party and other conservative groups. This is no mere scandal — it’s a major breach of the law.” Emails Show Corruption At Heart Of Administration

“Yesterday was a significant day in the IRS abuse scandal. The scandal evolved from being about pesky delays in IRS exemption applications to a government conniving with outside interests to put political opponents in prison. Emails obtained by Judicial Watch through the Freedom of Information Act reveal Lois Lerner cooking up plans with Justice Department officials to talk about ways to criminally charge conservative groups that are insufficiently quiet.” A New, More Sinister IRS Scandal

“’And I would say to Muslims in this country, if they want to practice Sharia law, go back to where you came from, to those nations that recognize sharia law,” said Graham.  “But we have our own laws here.’” Rev. Graham: Muslims Who ‘Want to Practice Sharia Law’ Should ‘Go Back to Where You Came From’

The Left

We’re not mean. “I’m glad that Kohn and Powers have granted those on the right are, as Kohn notes, “personable and kind and human. Just like me.” But why did it take working among them to make the epoch-shattering discovery* that half the country are actual flesh-and-blood humans and not The Other?” Conservatives in the Mist, Yet Again

“America is engaged in a civil war — thank God, a non-violent one, but a civil war nonetheless. It is as divided as it was during the Civil War in the 19th century. The issue then was slavery — a huge moral divide, of course. But today, the country is divided by opposite views about much more than one major issue. The left and right are divided by their views of morality, politics, society, religion, the individual and the very nature of America. The left seeks to, as candidate Barack Obama promised five days before his first election, “fundamentally transform the United States of America.” That is what the left is doing. There is almost no area of American life in which the left’s influence is not transformative, and ultimately destructive.” What the Left Did Last Week

“I thought it was smart when Fox News promoted Megyn Kelly, an anchor with the singular ability to generate juicy cable news moments that appeal to the left and the right, to an evening slot. Ratings-wise, that seems to have been a good call for the network. But one of the things that makes Fox such a strong channel, purely from a business perspective, is its ability to develop new talent and new concepts. And the show the network dreamed up to replace Kelly’s in daytime has a flair of evil genius: In  “Outnumbered,” a panel of women will debate news and pop culture with a token man.” Fox News’s ‘Outnumbered’ is a stroke of evil genius

Crashing and burning. “It is quite possible that the ACA is shaping up as the greatest act of fiscal irresponsibility ever committed by federal legislators. Nothing immediately comes to mind as comparable to it. Certainly no tax legislation is, because tax rates rise and fall frequently, such that one Congress’s tax cut can be (and often is) undone by a later tax increase. The same is true for legislation affecting appropriated spending programs. But the ACA is a commitment to permanently subsidize comprehensive health insurance for millions who could not otherwise afford it, which the federal government has no viable plan to finance. Moreover, experience shows that it is very difficult to scale back such spending once large numbers of Americans have been made dependent on it.” THE UNFOLDING FISCAL DISASTER BEHIND ACA ENROLLMENT FIGURES

“You knew this was coming. After their self-congratulatory announcement that ObamaCare had in fact managed to reach seven million enrollees two weeks ago (whatever the heck “enrollment” is even supposed to mean these days), the numbers after the deadline extension grace period (for people already “in line” for the exchanges when the March 31st deadline hit, you see) that ended on April 15th were only going to get better. ObamaCare has now hit an even moretriumphant eight million “enrollees” — well beyond the seven-million projection goal that, only a few short months ago, they were trying to claim they had never actually made in the first place.” The encore ObamaCare victory lap after the not-a-deadline-extension

“Silence, subject! The debate is over. And horror stories like yours have been “debunked” by Harry Reid and the media — a “fact” that the president helpfully mentioned today, in an effort to minimize the financial and medical hardships his signature law is inflicting on millions of people.” Analysis: Obama Celebrates Eight Million ‘Enrollments,’ Again Declares Debate ‘Over’

“To speak of the debate being over now isn’t merely wishful thinking on the president’s part. It’s a conscious effort to both deceive and distract the American public from the very real problems associated with the misnamed Affordable Care Act. Try as he might, more boasts and attempts to shut up opponents won’t end this debate or ensure ObamaCare’s survival.” Obama’s Boasts Won’t End OCare Debate

“’The widows who were dropped in January had always been covered under the county’s old self-insured health care plan. But officials tell us the program had to be abandoned when they were informed that new regulations in Obamacare would amount to an extra $25 million dollars per year, money that chairman Dale Strong says the county simply didn’t have,’ says the local reporter.” Dozens of Widows Dropped from Health Care Due to Obamacare in Alabama
